Today was a day of chasing waterfalls and soaking in the serene beauty of Chapada dos Veadeiros. From the thunderous cascades of Couros to the mystical embrace of Jardim de Maytrea, every moment felt like stepping into a postcard. It’s days like these that remind me why I traded the predictable comfort of Amsterdam for the raw, untamed allure of Brazil.

Our day began in the charming Vila de São Jorge, where we fueled up for our adventures at Restaurante Buritis. The buffet of made-to-order pastas was exactly what we needed to kickstart our energy levels. I opted for a hearty combination of vegetables and a creamy pesto sauce, while my friends piled their plates high with various meats and spices. It's amazing how a simple meal can set the tone for an entire day, and Buritis certainly delivered on that front. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of the dishes back in Amsterdam, perhaps adding a Dutch twist to the Brazilian flavors.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off towards the Couros waterfalls. The drive itself was an adventure, a mix of paved roads and bumpy dirt tracks that tested our trusty bus. As we drove, the landscape transformed, the familiar cityscape giving way to the untamed beauty of the Cerrado. The air was thick with the scent of earth and wildflowers, a stark contrast to the clean, crisp air of Amsterdam. The August sun beat down on us, a reminder that we were far from the cool, temperate climate of the Netherlands.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in grand gestures, but in the quiet moments of connection with nature and friends.

The hike to the waterfalls was a relatively easy 2.5-mile trek, taking us through lush landscapes and rocky terrain. The anticipation grew with each step as we listened to the increasing roar of the cascading water. Finally, we arrived at the main attraction: a series of breathtaking waterfalls plunging into crystal-clear pools. The sight was simply mesmerizing. We spent hours swimming, taking photos, and simply basking in the natural beauty around us. The power of the water was invigorating, washing away any lingering stress or fatigue. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reminder of the simple joys in life. I couldn't help but think of Jan and how much he would have loved this. Next time, I will make sure he doesn't miss out on this.

After our refreshing dip, we continued our journey towards Jardim de Maytrea. This iconic spot is renowned for its stunning views of the savannah and unique rock formations. As we approached, the landscape opened up before us, revealing a vast expanse of greenery framed by imposing hills. The late afternoon sun cast a golden glow over the scene, creating a magical atmosphere. We parked the car and took a leisurely stroll, soaking in the tranquility of the surroundings. The air was still and peaceful, broken only by the occasional chirping of birds. It was the perfect place for quiet reflection, a moment to appreciate the beauty and serenity of nature. Some say that Jardim de Maytrea is a mystical portal to another dimension. Whether that’s true or not, there’s no denying the special energy of this place.

Before heading back to our campsite, we made a pit stop at Arte Nossa - a loja da Nêga. This charming rock shop is a treasure trove of crystals, gemstones, and handcrafted items. As someone who appreciates unique and meaningful souvenirs, I was immediately drawn to the shop's vibrant energy. The owner, Maria Darcy Ilheo, is known for her personalized recommendations, and she took the time to guide us through her extensive collection. I ended up purchasing a beautiful amethyst crystal, which Maria explained was known for its calming and protective properties. It will be a reminder of this incredible journey and the powerful energy of Chapada dos Veadeiros. I also picked up a few smaller stones for my friends back in Amsterdam, hoping to share a piece of this magical place with them.

For dinner, we decided to treat ourselves to some Italian cuisine at Zu's Bistro. This cozy restaurant is known for its delicious risottos and pastas, all prepared with fresh, local ingredients. The owner personally prepares risottos and pastas. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the aroma of garlic and herbs filled the air. I opted for a creamy mushroom risotto, while my friends chose a spicy tomato pasta. Each dish was a work of art, bursting with flavor and cooked to perfection. It was the perfect way to end our day of adventure, a moment to relax and savor the simple pleasures of good food and good company. It reminded me of some of the cozy Italian restaurants in Amsterdam, but with a distinctly Brazilian twist.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to La Parrilla for a final meal. This Argentinian and Uruguayan restaurant is a culinary gem. Even though I was quite full already, I couldn’t resist trying some of their dishes. The location captures the essence of Argentine and Uruguayan cuisine with a unique touch. It was the perfect ending for such a full day.

Back at our campsite, as I lay in my tent, I couldn't help but reflect on the incredible day we had experienced. From the majestic waterfalls to the serene gardens and the vibrant culture of Alto Paraíso, every moment had been a feast for the senses. Chapada dos Veadeiros has a way of captivating your soul, of reminding you of the beauty and wonder that exists in the world. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to explore and connect with nature. Tomorrow, we are planning to visit Abyss Waterfall and Mirante da Estrela. I am excited to see what adventures await us. I am also looking forward to trying Gastrobar Área 51.
