Echoes of Eternity
Today was a day etched in my memory forever – a deep dive into the heart of Machu Picchu and its surrounding mysteries. The air was thick with history, and every stone seemed to whisper tales of the past. As a social media manager with a passion for sustainable living, I was particularly keen to understand how this ancient city managed to thrive in harmony with its environment.
My day began with an early breakfast at the Restaurante Tinkuy Buffet Restaurant at Sanctuary Lodge. The views were simply breathtaking. Imagine sipping on a strong Peruvian coffee while gazing out at the majestic ruins of Machu Picchu! It was the perfect start to a day of exploration. The buffet offered a delightful array of local delicacies, fueling me up for the adventures ahead.

Stepping into the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu felt like stepping back in time. The sheer scale and ingenuity of the city are awe-inspiring. I wandered through the iconic terraces, marveling at the precision with which the stones were fitted together. It's incredible to think that this city was built without the use of mortar, yet it has stood the test of time for centuries.

I spent hours exploring the different sections of the city, from the Intihuatana stone to the Temple of the Sun. Each corner held a new surprise, a new piece of the puzzle that is Machu Picchu. I tried to imagine what life must have been like for the people who lived here, high in the Andes, centuries ago. Their connection to the land and their sophisticated understanding of agriculture and astronomy were truly remarkable.
The mountains have always been a sacred space, a place where the earthly and the divine meet.
After a morning of exploration, I headed to Restaurante Tupana Wasi for lunch. This charming spot offered traditional Peruvian cuisine with a modern twist. I indulged in a hearty quinoa soup and some delicious causa, a layered potato dish that is a staple of Peruvian cuisine. It was the perfect way to refuel after all that walking.

In the afternoon, I ventured off the beaten path to explore Sayacmarca, another fascinating Inca site located along the Inca Trail. The hike to Sayacmarca was challenging but incredibly rewarding. The trail wound its way through lush cloud forests, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The air was fresh and crisp, and the only sounds were the chirping of birds and the rustling of leaves.

Sayacmarca, which translates to inaccessible town, certainly lives up to its name. Perched high on a ridge, the site is a testament to the Inca's incredible engineering skills. The ruins are smaller than Machu Picchu, but they are no less impressive. I wandered through the narrow streets and enclosures, imagining what life must have been like for the people who lived here. It is believed that Sayacmarca was constructed during the 15th and 16th centuries when the Inca Empire thrived. The site may have served as a strategic outpost along the Inca Trail, functioning as a watchtower and checkpoint for travelers.
As the sun began to set, I made my way back to Aguas Calientes, the town at the foot of Machu Picchu. I decided to treat myself to dinner at Chullos Restaurant & Craft Beer. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere and a great selection of local craft beers. I ordered a traditional lomo saltado, a stir-fried beef dish that is a Peruvian classic. It was the perfect way to end a long and fulfilling day.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I decided to check out the Green PUB machupicchu. It was a lively spot with a good mix of locals and tourists. I enjoyed a pisco sour, the national drink of Peru, and chatted with some fellow travelers about our adventures. It was a great way to unwind and reflect on the incredible day I had experienced.

Today was a day of discovery, a day of connecting with the past and appreciating the ingenuity and resilience of the Inca people. As I prepare for tomorrow's adventures, which include hiking Phutuq K'usi and exploring more of the Inca Trail, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and wonder. I am also very excited to try La Cabaña de Gabriel Logde & Restaurant for breakfast and Restaurante Chicha Grill Cuisine for dinner!
I am also reminded of the importance of sustainable tourism and the need to protect these incredible sites for future generations. As a social media manager for a sustainable fashion startup, I feel a responsibility to share my experiences and inspire others to travel responsibly and respectfully. I'm also thinking about Jan, and how much he would have loved to experience this with me. Perhaps we can return together someday. For now, I will continue to explore and share the beauty and history of Peru with my readers.
