Embark on my first day exploring the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in Brazil. Join my journey through dunes, lagoons, and local flavors!
Arrival in Paradise: Lençóis Maranhenses Beckons
After what felt like an eternity in transit, I finally arrived in Barreirinhas, the gateway to the Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses. The journey from Amsterdam, with a layover in São Luís, was long but the anticipation of witnessing the famed dunes kept my spirits high. The air here is warm and carries a hint of the ocean, a welcome change from the crisp air of Delft. I'm eager to see what this natural wonder holds, especially after hearing so much about its unique ecosystem.

Jan, of course, sends his love from Delft. He would have loved to be here, photographing the landscape with his engineering eye, but his students need him. Layla, too, is keeping up with my travels from afar, sending messages of encouragement and awe at the pictures I’ve managed to sneak online – though the connection is admittedly spotty. Traveling with friends is such a joy, and I'm so glad they could join me on this adventure. Their laughter and camaraderie make every moment more special. We are all eager to explore this unique landscape together.
After settling into our simple yet comfortable lodgings, my friends and I ventured out to explore the Povoado de Ponta Verde, a charming village nestled near the park's entrance. The village exudes a rustic charm, with its sandy streets and colorful houses. The locals greeted us with warm smiles, their eyes reflecting the same curiosity we held for their home. We decided to start our culinary exploration with breakfast at Restaurante no Povoado de Ponta Verde.

The breakfast was a delightful introduction to Brazilian flavors. We savored freshly baked bread, tropical fruits bursting with sweetness, and strong, aromatic coffee that jolted us awake after our long journey. It was the perfect start to our adventure, fueling us for the day ahead.
The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and today, our steps are on the sands of Lençóis Maranhenses.
With our appetites sated and our spirits high, we set off to explore the Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses. The park stretches out like a surreal dreamscape, with undulating white dunes meeting crystal-clear lagoons. The contrast is striking, a dance between desert and oasis. The sand is soft beneath my feet, and the breeze carries whispers of adventure. It's easy to see why this place is called the Brazilian Sahara.
We spent the morning hiking through the dunes, marveling at the seemingly endless expanse of sand. The lagoons, nestled between the dunes, were a welcome sight, their cool waters inviting us to take a refreshing dip. I felt a sense of childlike wonder as I waded into the water, the sun warming my skin and the gentle breeze caressing my face.
The weather in September is quite agreeable; the sun is generous, but the breeze keeps the heat at bay. It's the perfect time to explore the park, with the lagoons still full from the rainy season. I made sure to apply plenty of sunscreen, remembering my essentials, and was grateful for my wide-brimmed hat. I did, however, lament forgetting my portable charger and mosquito repellent – lessons learned for tomorrow.
For lunch, we returned to the Restaurante no Povoado de Ponta Verde, eager to try more of their local cuisine. We feasted on fresh seafood, grilled to perfection and served with a side of rice and beans. The flavors were simple yet satisfying, a testament to the quality of the ingredients. The restaurant itself was bustling with activity, locals and tourists alike enjoying the delicious food and lively atmosphere.
In the afternoon, we explored more of the park, venturing deeper into the dune landscape. We encountered other travelers, each with their own stories and experiences to share. It's always fascinating to meet people from different backgrounds, united by their love for travel and adventure. I even met a fellow blogger who was just as captivated by the park’s beauty as I was. We exchanged tips and stories, promising to keep in touch and follow each other’s journeys.
As the sun began to set, we made our way back to the village, our bodies tired but our spirits rejuvenated. The sunset over the dunes was a sight to behold, painting the sky in hues of orange, pink, and purple. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day, a moment I will cherish forever.
Before dinner, we stopped by Casa Da Castanha E Artesanato, a local shop selling handicrafts and souvenirs. I picked up a few small trinkets to bring back home, tokens of my time in this magical place. It's important to support the local economy, and I was happy to contribute in my own small way.

For dinner, we, predictably, found ourselves back at Restaurante no Povoado de Ponta Verde. After such a long day, we wanted something comforting and familiar. We enjoyed a hearty meal, reminiscing about our adventures and planning for the days ahead. The sense of contentment and gratitude washed over me as I savored each bite.
To cap off the evening, we decided to visit Lencois Bar, a local watering hole known for its lively atmosphere and refreshing drinks. We sipped on caipirinhas, the national cocktail of Brazil, and listened to live music. The bar was filled with locals and tourists, all mingling and enjoying the festive ambiance. It was a perfect way to unwind and soak in the local culture.

The caipirinhas were expertly prepared, the perfect blend of sweet and sour. The music was infectious, and soon we found ourselves tapping our feet and singing along. It was a joyful and carefree moment, a reminder of the simple pleasures in life.
As the night drew to a close, we made our way back to our lodgings, the stars twinkling above us. The air was cool and still, and the only sound was the gentle rustling of the palm trees. I felt a sense of peace and contentment, grateful for the experiences of the day.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Lagoa Bonita and Dunas de Atins. I’ve heard that Lagoa Bonita offers a thrilling descent down a steep dune, while Dunas de Atins is known for its pristine beauty. I'm particularly excited about trying the local shrimp dish at Atins, recommended by several fellow travelers. I'm also curious about Bar da Amizade, a spot I hope we'll have time to visit. I am also determined to find a portable charger, and some mosquito repellent before we venture out!
As I drift off to sleep, I can't help but feel a sense of excitement for what tomorrow holds. The Lençóis Maranhenses has already exceeded my expectations, and I know that the best is yet to come. This journey is not just about seeing beautiful landscapes; it's about connecting with nature, immersing myself in a new culture, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. And I am so glad to be sharing it with my friends.
I am eager to share more of my adventures with you tomorrow. Until then, tenha uma boa noite (have a good night)!
