Solo Expedition to the Heart of the Amazon: Tambopata National Reserve
Day 6: A Day of Conservation and Avian Wonders at Taricaya
Immersing myself in the heart of Tambopata, where conservation meets birdwatching at Taricaya Ecological Reserve. A day of pure Amazonian bliss!
Guardians of the Rainforest: Taricaya's Ecological Embrace
Today was a symphony of sights and sounds, a vibrant tapestry woven with the threads of conservation and the melodies of the rainforest. Leaving the familiar comforts of the lodge behind, I ventured into the heart of the Tambopata National Reserve, eager to witness the efforts to protect this precious ecosystem. The day unfolded as a beautiful dance between learning and experiencing, a reminder of the delicate balance we must strive to maintain with nature.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante MOSHE. I savored the local flavors, fueling up for a day dedicated to exploring the Reserva Ecologica Taricaya. The boat ride to the reserve was an adventure in itself, the crisp morning air filled with the promise of the unknown. The Madre de Dios River glistened under the rising sun, its gentle currents carrying us deeper into the Amazonian wilderness.

Arriving at Taricaya, I was immediately struck by the palpable sense of dedication that permeated the air. This 476-hectare reserve is a haven for biodiversity, a testament to the power of restoration. I learned that Taricaya EcoReserve was founded in 2001 and opened the first Rescue Centre in Peru in 2008. The reserve borders the Tambopata National Reserve, one of the most biodiverse areas in the world. The staff and volunteers live and work daily on different projects developed within the Reserve.
My first stop was the animal rescue center, the first of its kind in Peru. It's here that confiscated wild animals, victims of the illegal pet trade, are nursed back to health and, when possible, released back into their natural habitat. Seeing these creatures up close, hearing their stories, was both heartbreaking and inspiring. There were monkeys, parrots, and even a baby tapir, all receiving the care they needed to return to the wild. The center also runs a captive breeding program and has successfully bred various animals. It was a stark reminder of the impact humans can have on these fragile ecosystems, but also a beacon of hope, showcasing the incredible work being done to undo the damage.
The beauty of the natural world lies in its resilience, and it is our duty to protect that resilience.
Next on the agenda was the Taricaya Canopy Walkway, said to be the tallest tree top walk in South America. As I ascended, the rainforest unfolded beneath me, a sea of green stretching as far as the eye could see. From this vantage point, 42 meters high, the immensity of the Amazon was truly breathtaking. The walkway itself is 90 meters long and used by visitors and investigators for wildlife watching and monitoring.
The afternoon was dedicated to birdwatching, a pursuit that has become increasingly dear to my heart during this trip. Tambopata is known as one of the most species-rich birding regions on Earth. Accompanied by a local guide, I ventured into the jungle trails, my binoculars at the ready. The air was alive with the calls of exotic birds, a symphony of chirps, whistles, and trills that echoed through the trees. We spotted mealy parrots and white-fronted toucans. While I didn’t spot a harpy eagle, knowing they were out there, masters of the canopy, was exciting.

The guide shared his extensive knowledge of the local avifauna, pointing out the unique characteristics and behaviors of each species. I learned about the importance of the clay licks, where macaws and parrots gather to ingest minerals that neutralize toxins in their diet. It’s a noisy, colorful spectacle that I hope to witness before I leave Tambopata. Tambopata is home to over 600 bird species. I was also told about the migratory birds like Pandion haliaetus and Buteo platypterus that pass through the reserve.
As the sun began to set, casting long shadows across the rainforest, I made my way back to the boat, my heart full of gratitude for the experiences of the day. A quick stop for lunch at MARACUYEAH was perfect before heading back out.

Before heading back to the lodge for dinner at Restaurante LOS PAJARITOS, I decided to stop by Jungla's Tambopata, a local bar. I enjoyed a drink while reflecting on the day's events. It was a perfect way to unwind and soak in the atmosphere of the Amazon.

Tomorrow promises another adventure as I plan to visit La jungla de doña Ayda and Puerto Maldonado Main Square. I am also hoping to do some shopping at MERCADO DE PRODUCTOS DE TAMBOPATA.
My thoughts drift back to Maximilian and Astrid in Berlin. I miss them dearly, but I know this journey is enriching me in ways I couldn't have imagined. I'm already planning a family trip back here, to share the wonders of the Amazon with them. Perhaps Astrid will develop a passion for birdwatching, just like her mother. And Maximilian, with his engineering mind, will appreciate the intricate ecosystems and the challenges of conservation.
Back at the lodge, as I lay in my hammock, listening to the sounds of the rainforest, I felt a profound sense of connection to this place. It's a connection that transcends language and culture, a connection that speaks to the shared responsibility we all have to protect this planet. And as I drift off to sleep, I dream of vibrant macaws, playful monkeys, and the unwavering dedication of the people who call Taricaya home.
The work being done here is crucial, and it's inspiring to see firsthand the positive impact it's having on the local ecosystem. It reinforces my belief in sustainable tourism and the importance of supporting organizations that prioritize conservation. I encourage anyone planning a trip to the Amazon to consider visiting Taricaya and contributing to their efforts. Every little bit helps, and the rewards are immeasurable. The Research Center Taricaya has recorded 481 species on the 500 hectares big reserve.
As I prepare for tomorrow's adventures, I am filled with a sense of anticipation and gratitude. The Amazon has a way of captivating the soul, of reminding us of the beauty and fragility of our planet. And I am honored to be a part of its story, even in a small way.
