Guardians of the Rainforest
Today was a profound experience, a day where the vibrant heart of the Amazon revealed itself in layers of discovery. From panoramic views to the dedicated work of conservationists, I felt a deep connection to this incredible ecosystem. It’s days like these that remind me why I started this journey, to witness and share the wonders of our planet.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante MOSHE. The restaurant is located along the Tambopata River, and the atmosphere was perfect for a traveler like myself, with the sounds of live music from the Moshe Band filling the air. Fuelled up and ready for the day, I set off to explore the natural wonders of the Tambopata National Reserve.

My first stop was the Mirador Biodiversidad. The tower itself is designed to look like a chestnut tree, which is native to the Madre de Dios region. Climbing the Mirador Biodiversidad, I was immediately struck by the sheer scale of the rainforest. From the top, the view was breathtaking – an endless sea of green stretching as far as the eye could see. The air was alive with the sounds of the jungle, a symphony of chirps, croaks, and rustling leaves. It was a perfect vantage point to appreciate the immense biodiversity of Tambopata. I was able to see the city of Puerto Maldonado from the top of the tower, as well.

The true beauty of nature is revealed when we understand the delicate balance that sustains it.
After taking in the view, I descended the Mirador and made my way to the Panthera-Sanctuary Research Center. This sanctuary is dedicated to the preservation and study of big cats, and it was fascinating to learn about the work they do to protect these magnificent animals. The center is nestled in the lush landscapes of Peru, so the surrounding scenery was stunning. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable, and I was captivated by their passion for conservation. They explained the challenges faced by big cats in the wild and the ongoing efforts to mitigate these issues. It was inspiring to see firsthand the dedication and hard work that goes into protecting these vulnerable species.

For lunch, I stopped at MARACUYEAH, a local restaurant known for its authentic Peruvian cuisine. I tried a traditional dish made with fresh, local ingredients, and it was absolutely delicious. It’s always a pleasure to support local businesses and experience the flavors of a new place.

Before heading back to my lodge, I had dinner at Restaurante LOS PAJARITOS. It was a cozy spot with a relaxed vibe, and the food was excellent. I tried another local specialty, and it was the perfect way to end the day.

Reflecting on the day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the wonders of Tambopata. The Amazon is a truly special place, and I am honored to be able to share its beauty with all of you. I am also reminded of the importance of conservation and the need to protect these precious ecosystems for future generations. It's places like these that remind me so much of the nature back home in Fyresdal, and I hope Astrid will be able to experience a place like this one day.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit more research centers, including the Centro de Investigacion Hoja Nueva, and see more of the local wildlife. I also intend to do some shopping at Fantasias boutique. I'm excited to see what new adventures await!
The Tambopata National Reserve is more than just a destination; it's an experience that touches the soul. As I continue my journey, I carry with me a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper appreciation for the natural world. I hope that my experiences inspire you to embark on your own adventures and to become guardians of our planet.
The biodiversity here is incredible. There are over 1,200 species of plants, more than 600 species of birds, and hundreds of species of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and insects. The reserve is also home to several large jungle animals, including jaguars, tapirs, and giant otters.
Tambopata is also known for its macaw clay licks, where hundreds of macaws and parrots gather to eat clay from the riverbanks. The clay is rich in minerals and salts, which the birds need to supplement their diet. The clay licks are a spectacular sight, with the birds creating a riot of color and noise.
The Tambopata National Reserve is a true gem of the Amazon rainforest, and I encourage anyone who loves nature and adventure to visit it. It is an experience you will never forget.
