Echoes of the Cradle of Gold

Today marks the end of our incredible journey through the Choquequirao Trek. As I sit down to write this, I'm filled with a mix of emotions – gratitude for the experiences we've had, awe at the landscapes we've witnessed, and a tinge of sadness that this chapter is coming to a close. This trek has been more than just a physical challenge; it's been a deep dive into the heart of Incan history and culture, and a chance for Lena and me to connect with each other and with nature in ways we never imagined.

Our final day began with a hearty breakfast at Inka Wasi Restaurant. The aroma of traditional Cusco dishes filled the air, and we savored every bite, knowing it would be one of our last tastes of authentic Peruvian cuisine for a while. I went with the Aguadito soup, a warm Chicken, Cilantro & Rice Soup, while Lena chose the Ceviche de Pescado. Fuelled up and ready, we set off to explore the last remnants of Choquesuysuy.

First on our list was Choquesuysuy. Wandering through the stone ruins, I couldn't help but marvel at the precision of the ancient builders. The way they constructed these enduring structures was really impressive. Each stone seemed to whisper tales of a bygone era, inviting us to imagine the lives of those who once inhabited this land. The tranquility of the location allowed for an immersive experience, where we could connect with the spirit of the past while surrounded by the stunning natural beauty of the region. Lena, with her keen eye for detail, captured some amazing shots of the stonework, the kind of photos that will transport us back here every time we look at them.

The memories we've created on this trek will undoubtedly stay with us, shaping our perspectives and enriching our lives in countless ways.

Next, we hiked up Cerro Choquequirao, wanting to take in one last panoramic view of this incredible site. The climb was invigorating, and as we reached the summit, we were rewarded with a breathtaking vista. The entire Choquequirao complex lay before us, nestled amidst the rugged Vilcabamba mountain range. The Apurimac River snaked through the canyon below, and the surrounding peaks seemed to touch the sky. It was a moment of pure serenity, a perfect way to bid farewell to this ancient city. I took a moment to appreciate the accomplishment of reaching the summit, thinking of my upbringing in Cyprus, and how the mountains here, though different, evoked the same sense of awe and respect.

After soaking in the views, we made our way back down, our thoughts already turning to Cusco. We had lunch at SUMAQCHA RESTAURANT. This family-owned establishment is known for its authentic Peruvian cuisine and warm, inviting atmosphere. We shared a variety of dishes, including cuy (guinea pig) and alpaca steak, each bursting with local flavors. The owners were incredibly welcoming, sharing stories about their culinary roots and making us feel like part of their family. Lena really enjoyed engaging with them, asking about the ingredients and preparation methods. It was a truly immersive cultural experience.

With our bellies full and our hearts content, we headed to Cusco, where we checked into our hotel and took some time to relax and freshen up. In the evening, we decided to treat ourselves to a special farewell dinner at Chicha por Gaston Acurio. This restaurant, helmed by one of Peru's most renowned chefs, Gaston Acurio, is a celebration of Peruvian cuisine. The menu focuses on local produce and sustainably sourced ingredients, and each dish is a work of art. We savored every bite, reminiscing about our favorite moments from the trek. I remember thinking about how much Lena and I enjoy exploring different cuisines together, and how this trip has only deepened our appreciation for Peruvian gastronomy.

To cap off our final night, we ventured to Hidden restobar, a cozy spot known for its signature cocktails and relaxed ambiance. We sipped on Pisco Sours, reminiscing about our adventure and planning our next one. The bar was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the vibrant Cusco nightlife. It was a perfect way to soak in the city's atmosphere and say goodbye to this amazing country.
