A Day of Discovery in the Blue Pearl
Today was all about soaking in the unique atmosphere of Chefchaouen. With its blue-washed walls and bustling streets, every corner turned revealed a new sensory experience. From exploring historical landmarks to indulging in local flavors, it was a day filled with cultural immersion and delightful surprises.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Cremeri Elmaataoui. Lena had told me that I absolutely had to try it, and she was spot on! The restaurant offered a delightful array of Moroccan pastries and creamy ice creams. It was the perfect way to fuel up before diving into our explorations. The cozy seating and charming decor added to the experience, making it a sweet escape right in the heart of the blue city.

With our appetites satisfied, we set out to visit Bab El Ain. This southern gate of the medina, dating back to 1511, leads directly into the newer parts of Chefchaouen. I was struck by the building's unique design, resembling a house with its own windows and light. Bab El Ain serves as a starting and ending point for many journeys within the medina, and it was fascinating to watch locals and tourists alike pass through this historic portal.

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not only in its picturesque views but also in the warmth and authenticity of its people.
Next on the agenda was some retail therapy. We ventured into one of Chefchaouen's copper and lamps shops. The craftsmanship was incredible. The intricate designs and warm glow of the copper lamps immediately caught my eye. I learned that many of these lamps are handmade, often by families who have been perfecting their craft for generations. I even met Omar, a local artisan who learned the trade from a Jewish Moroccan man and has been creating lamps for over 40 years. It was inspiring to see such dedication to traditional artistry.

For lunch, we opted for a quick and tasty meal at Sandwich Chez Aziz. This local spot is known for its delicious sandwiches, pizzas, and milkshakes at reasonable prices. I went for a mushroom pizza and an avocado orange juice, a combination that hit the spot. The place was bustling with locals, which is always a good sign, and it offered a welcome break from the tourist crowds in the old town.

In the late afternoon, we decided to unwind at Café Mundial. This café is a popular spot for both locals and tourists, offering a cozy atmosphere and a diverse menu. I enjoyed a refreshing Moroccan mint tea while Lena caught up on emails using the free Wi-Fi. As evening approached, the café transformed into a lively sports bar, with locals gathering to watch their favorite games. It was a great place to soak in the local culture and relax after a day of exploring.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Restaurant Hamsa for dinner. This restaurant is known for its Mediterranean and Moroccan cuisine, with plenty of vegan and vegetarian options. I opted for the falafel plate, while my friends tried the tagine and couscous. The food was delicious, and the rooftop terrace offered stunning views of the main square. The friendly staff and pleasant atmosphere made it a memorable dining experience.

After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll through the blue-washed streets, soaking in the magical atmosphere of Chefchaouen at night. The town has a relaxed and subdued vibe compared to Morocco's larger cities, with nightlife centered around cozy cafes and traditional music venues. We stopped by a local bar, also named Café Mundial, for a nightcap before heading back to Hotel Dar Mounir.

Reflecting on the day, I felt a deep sense of connection to this enchanting town. From the historical landmarks to the vibrant shops and cozy cafes, Chefchaouen had captured my heart. The warmth and authenticity of the local people made the experience even more special. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, when we plan to visit Plaza Mohammed V and explore more of the town's hidden gems.
Tomorrow, we're planning to explore Plaza Mohammed V and do some more souvenir shopping. I'm hoping to find some unique treasures to bring back home to Berlin. I'm also excited to try some new restaurants and cafes, and maybe even take a cooking class to learn how to prepare traditional Moroccan dishes. The hotel staff mentioned that there might be some local music performances in the evening, so I'm hoping to catch one of those as well.
I'm also thinking about Sophia and Lena back in Berlin. I know Sophia would absolutely love running around the blue streets and discovering all the hidden corners of the medina. I'll have to bring her back here someday. And Lena, with her architectural eye, would be fascinated by the unique building styles and the history behind the blue walls. I'm already planning a family trip back to Chefchaouen in the future.
For those planning a visit to Chefchaouen, I highly recommend taking the time to explore beyond the main tourist attractions. Wander through the narrow streets, chat with the locals, and indulge in the local cuisine. You'll be rewarded with a truly unforgettable experience. I almost forgot my umbrella today, but luckily, I remembered it before leaving the hotel. It's always good to be prepared for unexpected weather, even in September.
As I settle in for the night, I can't help but feel grateful for this incredible journey. Chefchaouen has exceeded all my expectations, and I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings. Goodnight from the Blue Pearl of Morocco!
