Beacon of Beauty and Mountain Majesty

Day 3 on Senja Island, and the solo adventure continues to unfold in the most spectacular ways. Today was a blend of coastal charm and challenging hikes, a true feast for the senses. I set out to explore more of what this stunning island has to offer, and Senja certainly delivered.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Senja Fjordhotell. Fuelled up with a traditional Norwegian spread, I was ready to embrace the day's itinerary. The weather in November is definitely something to consider, with temperatures hovering around 4°C during the day and dropping to -2°C at night, plus a high chance of rain or snow. But as they say, there's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing!

First stop: Hamn Lighthouse. This wasn't just any lighthouse; it was a beacon of scenic beauty. The drive there was stunning, with dramatic cliffs and tranquil waters creating a perfect backdrop. Hamn has a rich history, once a bustling trading post and fishing village dating back to the 1600s. I learned that in the late 19th century, it even housed one of the world's first hydroelectric power plants, using technology from Thomas Alva Edison. Imagine that!

I spent a good hour exploring the area around the lighthouse, camera in hand. The views of the northwest coast of Senja were simply breathtaking. The lighthouse itself stands proudly on a rocky outcrop, offering panoramic views that stretched for miles. I could see why this spot is a favorite for photographers and nature lovers alike. It was easy to imagine the countless ships it had guided safely to shore over the years.

Before heading off to my next adventure, I popped into Senja Galleri og Rammeverksted in Skaland. Though I didn't buy anything, it was great to see some local art and crafts. It’s always nice to support local artisans when traveling, and I made a mental note to perhaps return later in the trip.

The mountains are calling and I must go. - John Muir. Today, Segla was calling, and I answered.
The afternoon was dedicated to conquering Segla, one of Senja's most iconic mountains. The hike is known to be moderately difficult, with a steep elevation gain. Several sources rate the hike as strenuous. It's not the longest hike, but the steep climb definitely requires a good level of fitness.

The trail starts in Fjordgård, and it’s well-marked with red paint on the trees and rocks. The first part was a steady uphill climb, and as I ascended, the views started to open up. After about 30-40 minutes, I reached a more open section that offered sweeping views of the surrounding peaks and fjords. It was a great spot to catch my breath and take in the scenery.

The second half of the hike was where things got real. The trail became rockier and much steeper. I had to watch my step as it could be slippery, especially with the November conditions. There were even a few sections where I had to use my hands to scramble over the rocks. It reminded me of some of the hikes Lena and I did in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains near Dresden, though those were definitely less exposed!

The final push to the summit was challenging, but oh-so-worth it. The panoramic views from the top were simply breathtaking. I could see for miles in every direction, with the fjords cutting through the landscape and the rugged coastline stretching out to the horizon. The sense of accomplishment was immense, standing on top of Segla after that climb.

I spent a good while at the summit, soaking in the views and snapping photos. It's moments like these that make solo travel so rewarding. Just me, the mountain, and the vast Norwegian wilderness.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Salteriet Restaurant & Bar at Mefjord Brygge for dinner. This maritime-style restaurant focuses on locally sourced products and traditional North Norwegian cuisine. I decided to try the pan-fried cod with roasted potatoes and cauliflower purée. It was delicious!

Salteriet has a cozy and informal atmosphere, and I enjoyed looking at the old objects and pictures from Mefjordvær that decorated the space. It gave me a sense of the area's rich coastal history. They also had a selection of local beers, so I had to try a Senja Beer, a light and fruity Kölsch.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the NASJONAL TURISTVEG Senja - SCENIC ROUTE Senja and Trælvika view [Scenic Route Senja is a national tourist route that offers stunning views and photo opportunities [It will be great to see it]]. I am also planning to stop by Pila Pub AS Skaland for a drink [If I have time].

Back at my guesthouse now, reflecting on another incredible day on Senja. The combination of coastal beauty and mountain majesty has truly captivated me. This solo trip is turning out to be exactly what I needed – a chance to unwind, reflect, and connect with nature. Goodnight from Senja!
