A Day of Arctic Wonders

Today was a day filled with quintessential Arctic experiences. From the thrill of dog sledding through snowy landscapes to the quiet charm of local shops and the hopeful search for the Northern Lights, Senja revealed more of its magic. It's days like these that remind me why I embarked on this solo journey in the first place – to embrace the unexpected and find inspiration in the raw beauty of nature.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Fjøsn Restaurant & Bar. It's a spot known for its unique atmosphere, blending rustic charm with modern design, located at the Aurora Borealis Observatory. The restaurant, once a goat barn, has been transformed into a New York loft-inspired space with high ceilings and large windows. While the reviews mentioned mixed experiences with the food, I decided to try a traditional Norwegian dish. It was the perfect way to fuel up for the day's adventures, and the views of the surrounding landscape were simply breathtaking.

After breakfast, I headed to Senja Husky Adventure AS. This was an experience I had been eagerly anticipating since planning this trip. As a dog lover, the thought of spending time with energetic huskies and exploring the Arctic wilderness was incredibly exciting. The kennel is family-run and located in Vangsvik. Upon arrival, I was greeted by the friendly staff and a pack of eager, tail-wagging Siberian Huskies. The passion they have for their dogs is clear.

We were given a briefing on how to mush the sled and handle the dogs, which, as someone with limited experience, I found incredibly helpful. Suited up in warm winter gear, I felt ready to take on the snowy trails. The feeling of gliding through the pristine, snow-covered landscape, pulled by a team of enthusiastic huskies, was exhilarating. The dogs were clearly in their element, their energy infectious as they bounded through the snow.

The best view comes after the hardest climb – or in this case, the most exhilarating sled ride.

It was more than just a ride; it was an immersive experience, connecting with nature and these incredible animals. The guides shared stories about the dogs, their individual personalities, and their roles in the team. I learned about the Canadian Eskimo Dogs they have as part of a preservation program. It was fascinating to hear about the history and efforts to revive this endangered breed. The whole experience felt personal and authentic, far from a typical tourist trap.

After the thrilling husky adventure, I decided to embrace a bit of local culture and visited Gammelbutikken i Skrolsvik. This charming old general store, dating back to the 1870s, is like stepping back in time. Originally, it served as a vital hub for the fishing village, providing everything from food and clothing to fishing gear. It even functioned as an office for the local fish landing factory.

Today, Gammelbutikken is a delightful combination of museum, souvenir shop, and café. The original furnishings from 1925 are still in place, creating a truly authentic atmosphere. I spent some time browsing the handcrafted goods from local Senja artists and enjoyed a cup of coffee with a traditional pastry. It was a peaceful interlude, a chance to slow down and appreciate the history and character of this unique place. The shop is open on request all year.

For lunch, I stopped at Senjastua, a restaurant located near the bridge connecting Senja to the mainland. It's known for serving authentic tastes of Senja in a cozy atmosphere. I decided to try one of their traditional fish dishes, grilled stockfish, which was flavorful and satisfying. The staff was friendly and the service was quick. The restaurant has a charming atmosphere with beautiful decor. It was a convenient and enjoyable stop, providing a true taste of the local cuisine.

As evening approached, I made my way to Mefjord Brygge for dinner. This picturesque fishing village is surrounded by mountains, offering stunning views of the fjord. Mefjord Brygge itself is a resort with brightly decorated accommodations and a restaurant serving local dishes. The restaurant boasts seafood specialties and regional cuisine. I opted for the fried halibut, which was served with grated carrots, fried onions, and melted butter – a truly delicious and comforting meal. The staff were friendly and helpful.

After dinner, my focus shifted to the evening's main event: the Northern Lights. I joined a tour with Night Lights - Northern Lights and Night Sky Experiences, hoping to catch a glimpse of the elusive aurora borealis. November is typically a good time to see the Northern Lights in Senja, with long hours of darkness. However, the weather can be unpredictable, and there's never a guarantee.

We drove to a location known for its dark skies and minimal light pollution. Our guide shared insights about the science behind the aurora and pointed out constellations in the night sky. While the lights remained shy, hidden behind a layer of clouds, the experience was still magical. Being out in the stillness of the Arctic night, surrounded by the vastness of the universe, was a humbling experience. The anticipation, the shared excitement with fellow travelers, and the sheer beauty of the landscape made it a night to remember, even without the lights dancing above.

As I reflect on the day, I feel grateful for the experiences Senja has offered. It's a place where nature's raw beauty takes center stage, where adventure and tranquility coexist, and where the local culture is warm and welcoming. While the Northern Lights eluded me tonight, I remain hopeful for another chance tomorrow. The forecast predicts similar conditions, and I'm determined to keep searching.

Tomorrow marks the final day of my solo adventure in Senja. I plan to explore the Skøytenset Trail and enjoy a final nature walk, soaking in the island's stunning landscapes. I'll have breakfast at Skagi Senja hotel & lodge - Flo bord og bar, lunch at The Fat Cod, and a farewell dinner at Salteriet Restaurant & Bar. And perhaps, if the Northern Lights are feeling generous, I'll raise a glass at Simons partygamme to celebrate a trip filled with unforgettable memories. It's been a journey of self-discovery, connection with nature, and appreciation for the simple joys of life. I'm excited for what tomorrow holds, but also a little sad to see this chapter come to an end.

For now, I'll rest and dream of huskies, starry skies, and the elusive dance of the aurora. Goodnight from Senja.
