Senja's Embrace: Views and Visions

Today was a day of soaking in Senja's raw beauty and discovering the artistic heart that beats within this stunning island. From panoramic viewpoints to local art, it was a journey that fed both my soul and my camera lens. I feel incredibly fortunate to be experiencing this solo adventure, a chance to truly connect with nature and myself.

The day began with breakfast at Skagi Senja hotel & lodge - Flo bord og bar. I enjoyed a hearty meal, fueling up for the day's adventures. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff made it a perfect start. I overheard some other guests discussing their plans to hike Husfjellet, which is apparently right at the foot of the lodge. Maybe I'll add that to my list for a future trip.

My first stop was Kongsneshaugen, a spot I had read about offering incredible views of the surrounding landscape. The drive there was scenic in itself, winding through the fjords and past small villages. As I ascended towards Kongsneshaugen, the views started to open up, revealing the dramatic coastline and the vast expanse of the Norwegian Sea. Reaching the top, I was met with a vista that truly took my breath away. The rugged mountains, the deep blue waters, and the scattering of islands created a scene of unparalleled beauty. I spent a good hour there, just absorbing the view and capturing it through my lens. I even tried a few panoramic shots, hoping to do justice to the sheer scale of the landscape.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet moments of observation, where the grandeur of nature speaks directly to the soul.

Next on the itinerary was the Bergsbotn utsiktsplattform. This viewpoint is known for its unique design and the panoramic views it offers of Bergsfjorden and the surrounding peaks. The platform itself is quite impressive, extending out over the landscape and providing different vantage points from which to admire the scenery. The view from Bergsbotn was different from Kongsneshaugen, but equally stunning. Here, I could see the charming village of Bergsbotn nestled below, adding a human element to the vast natural landscape. The platform is 44-meter long, which gives you a lot of space to move around and find your perfect angle. The weather was kind today, with just a slight breeze and clear skies, making the views even more spectacular. I took my time exploring the platform, taking photos from every possible angle and simply enjoying the moment. It's amazing how these viewpoints are so easily accessible by car or public transportation.

For lunch, I stopped at Senjastua in Silsand. This restaurant is known for serving authentic tastes of Senja, using local ingredients and traditional recipes. The restaurant has been around for 50 years and is a landmark in the region. I decided to try the fried salmon, a local favorite, and it did not disappoint. The fish was cooked perfectly, and the flavors were rich and satisfying. The atmosphere of the restaurant was cozy and welcoming, and I felt right at home as I enjoyed my meal. I overheard some locals chatting about the history of the place, mentioning that it started as a roadside cafe and has become a popular spot for both locals and tourists.

After lunch, I visited Lillevik Art, a local art shop that features the work of Odd Harrong, a renowned artist from Finnmark. Harrong was known for his woodcuts, which often depicted scenes of nature and everyday life in Northern Norway. I was immediately drawn to the intricate details and the powerful emotions conveyed in his art. The shop itself was small but filled with character, and I spent a long time browsing the various pieces on display. I ended up buying a small print of one of Harrong's woodcuts, a piece titled En havets sønn (A Son of the Sea). It will serve as a reminder of my time on Senja and the beauty I have encountered here. It's amazing how art can capture the essence of a place and its people, and I feel grateful to have discovered Harrong's work.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Mefjord Brygge, where I had dinner reservations. This restaurant is located in the small fishing village of Mefjordvær and is known for its excellent North Norwegian cuisine. I decided to try the pan-fried cod, another local specialty, and it was absolutely delicious. The cod was fresh and flavorful, and the dish was prepared with a modern twist that elevated it to another level. The restaurant itself was beautifully decorated, with a maritime theme that reflected its location by the fjord. The staff were friendly and attentive, and I felt well taken care of as I enjoyed my meal. Mefjord Brygge also offers accommodation in apartments and hotel rooms.

Reflecting on the day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences I have had. Senja Island has truly captured my heart with its stunning landscapes, its rich culture, and its warm and welcoming people. Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Knuten Trail Head and Husøy Lighthouse, and maybe even visit Senja Handbryggeri for a taste of local craft beer. I'm excited to see what new adventures await me on this incredible island.

This solo journey is proving to be exactly what I needed – a chance to unwind, reflect, and connect with nature. And, of course, to capture some stunning photos along the way.
