A Day of Exploration and Culinary Delights

Today was a journey into the heart of Ria Formosa's diverse landscapes, a day filled with natural beauty, intriguing wildlife, and delicious local cuisine. From the tranquil marshlands to the vibrant flavors of Vilamoura, it was an experience that truly enriched my understanding of this unique region.

My day began with an early start, fueled by anticipation and a quick coffee. The destination was the Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António Marsh Natural Reserve, a vast wetland area that promised a morning of birdwatching and serene exploration. As I drove towards the reserve, the landscape gradually transformed, the urban sprawl giving way to open fields and the first glimpses of the marshlands. The air was crisp and clean, carrying a hint of salt from the nearby coast. It was a welcome change from the bustling city life I'm used to back in Berlin.

Arriving at the reserve, I was immediately struck by the sheer scale of the place. Covering over 2,000 hectares, the marshlands stretched out before me like a giant patchwork quilt, a mosaic of saltpans, inlets, and rural areas. The reserve is the oldest in Portugal, established in 1975, and it's clear that conservation efforts have paid off. The area teems with life, a haven for aquatic birds, fish, molluscs, and crustaceans.

I parked near the visitor center and decided to explore the signposted walking trails. The trails were well-maintained and easy to navigate, winding through the heart of the marshlands. As I walked, I was immediately serenaded by the sounds of nature – the calls of various bird species, the gentle rustling of reeds in the breeze, and the distant lapping of water against the shore. It was incredibly peaceful, a welcome escape from the constant hum of city life. I missed Lena, as I often do on these solo trips. She would have loved the tranquility of this place, and I made a mental note to bring her here someday.

Among the many bird species that call this reserve home, the black-winged stilt is perhaps the most iconic, serving as the symbol of the area. I spotted several of these elegant birds wading gracefully through the shallow waters, their long, slender legs perfectly adapted for navigating the marshy terrain. Other notable species include the pied avocet, black-tailed godwit, common flamingo, common ringed plover, and white stork. I was particularly thrilled to see a flock of flamingos in the distance, their vibrant pink plumage standing out against the muted tones of the landscape. Apparently, in the spring of 2021, the reserve saw the birth of 550 flamingos, a first for Portugal.

The beauty of nature lies not just in what you see, but in what it makes you feel.

After spending a few hours exploring the Castro Marim marsh, I drove towards Vilamoura, eager to experience a different facet of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. My next stop was the Parque Ambiental de Vilamoura, a 200-hectare park known for its diverse ecosystems and commitment to sustainability.

The Parque Ambiental de Vilamoura offered a stark contrast to the wide-open spaces of Castro Marim. Here, the landscape was more enclosed, with lush gardens, serene water bodies, and well-maintained walking paths. The park is an oasis of tranquility, designed to promote environmental awareness and provide a space for relaxation and recreation.

As I strolled through the park, I was impressed by the variety of plant species and wildlife. The park features several ecosystems, including grasslands, reedbeds, and lakes, each supporting a unique array of flora and fauna. I spotted several birdwatching hides, strategically located to provide unobstructed views of the local avifauna. According to what I read, the park is home to species like the Purple Swamphen, Booted Eagle, and Black-headed Weaver, among others.

The park also has walking, jogging and cycling paths, encouraging an active lifestyle amidst beautiful scenery. I chose to take a leisurely walk, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and the opportunity to connect with nature. It's a pet-friendly park, and I saw a few dog owners enjoying quality time with their furry friends. It struck me as a great place for families, offering a blend of recreation and education about the natural world.

After a morning immersed in nature, it was time to indulge in some local culinary delights. For breakfast, I headed to Restaurante Chefe Branco in Vilamoura, a spot recommended for its traditional Portuguese cuisine. The restaurant had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and I settled in for a hearty meal. I opted for a local specialty, *Bifinhos Porco Preto c/ Camarão Tigre Grelhado*, black pork steaks with grilled tiger prawns. It was delicious and the prices were very reasonable.

For lunch, I decided to try Sal'Mare, a restaurant that transforms from a beach club during the day to a steakhouse at sunset. I enjoyed a light and refreshing meal on their terrace, with a great view of the sea. The menu featured a variety of options, from sandwiches and salads to burgers and finger food. I chose a grilled fish salad, which was fresh and flavorful. The restaurant also offers personalized events on their rooftop, which sounds like a unique experience.

As evening approached, I made my way to Bovino Steakhouse for dinner, a restaurant known for its supreme quality beef and elegant setting. The steakhouse is located within the Quinta do Lago resort, overlooking the lake and the Ria Formosa Natural Park, offering unbeatable views. The décor was a blend of traditional and modern elements, creating a luminous and rich dining space.

I ordered a perfectly cooked steak, accompanied by a glass of fine Portuguese wine. The wine list is extensive, featuring some of the finest Portuguese and international wines. The service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was both sophisticated and relaxed. Bovino is also known for its rooftop lounge, where you can enjoy cocktails at sunset, and it's a popular venue for weddings and events, accommodating up to 400 guests.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I made a quick stop at Ervanária Shalom Nature, a charming herb shop in Faro. The shop offers a wide range of natural health and wellness products, including herbal remedies, aromatherapy supplies, organic teas, and beauty products. It's a haven for those interested in holistic living, and the staff are knowledgeable and helpful. I picked up a few herbal teas and some essential oils, planning to incorporate them into my daily routine back in Berlin. I also saw that they have Japanese grocery items, which was an unexpected find.
