First Impressions of Ria Formosa
The journey to Ria Formosa was smooth, a welcome change from the usual Berlin hustle. As I settled in, the anticipation of exploring this natural park filled me with excitement. Today was all about immersing myself in the local culture and natural beauty, setting the stage for a week of discovery and reflection. My day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Ria Formosa. Located on the fourth floor of a hotel, the restaurant offered panoramic views of the Ria Formosa and the bustling marina. It was a treat for the eyes, as the restaurant’s contemporary decor, with its light tones and spacious layout, created an inviting atmosphere. I enjoyed an excellent Mediterranean breakfast, which set the tone for a day of exploration. The restaurant's terrace provided a breathtaking view, making the start of my solo adventure truly special.

After breakfast, I headed straight for the Ria Formosa Nature Park. The park in December is quiet and peaceful, a perfect escape from crowded tourist spots. The weather was mild, with temperatures hovering around 13°C to 16°C, ideal for a comfortable day of hiking and exploration. I made sure to wear sturdy shoes, as recommended, since the trails can be rocky. As I began my walk, I was immediately struck by the serene beauty of the landscape. The park is a maze of lagoons, islands, and marshlands, creating a unique and ever-changing environment.

I spent the morning exploring the park's diverse ecosystems. Despite the cooler temperatures, the park was teeming with life. I spotted various bird species, including flamingos, spoonbills, and herons, which have migrated here for the winter. It was an incredible experience to witness these birds in their natural habitat. I was thankful I had remembered to bring my binoculars, even though I had forgotten my sunscreen and waterproof jacket. The Ria Formosa is indeed a paradise for bird lovers, with over 200 species recorded in the area.
Around midday, I decided to join one of the Ria Formosa Natural Park Eco Boat Tours. I opted for a solar boat tour to minimize my environmental impact. The tour was a fantastic way to see more of the park and learn about its unique ecology. The guide was knowledgeable and passionate about the area, pointing out various points of interest and sharing stories about the local wildlife. The boat trip took us through the heart of the lagoon, passing by oyster beds and clam farms.

The beauty of Ria Formosa lies not just in its landscapes, but in the quiet moments of connection with nature.
For lunch, I stopped at Restaurante Estaminé, located on Ilha Deserta. Reaching the island was an adventure in itself, requiring a short ferry ride from Faro. The restaurant is known for its exquisite Portuguese seafood, and I indulged in a delicious meal of grilled fish. The flavors were fresh and vibrant, a testament to the local ingredients. The setting was equally impressive, with stunning views of the surrounding coastline. After lunch, I took a leisurely stroll along the beach, enjoying the tranquility of the island. The island is deserted in winter, which made the experience feel more wild and special.

In the late afternoon, I made my way back to Faro and decided to check out Cantaloupe, a bar known for its cozy and intimate atmosphere. Located in Olhão, the bar has a privileged location facing the Ria Formosa. I enjoyed a refreshing drink while taking in the beautiful views of the lagoon. The bar offers a variety of good bottles, including Belgian beers, and also serves tapas and salads. It was a perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploration.

For dinner, I had made a reservation at Casa do Lago, enticed by the promise of exquisite cuisine and breathtaking views. The restaurant lived up to its reputation, offering a memorable dining experience. I savored a delicious meal while enjoying the serene ambiance of the surroundings. The service was impeccable, and the staff were attentive and friendly. It was a fitting end to a day filled with natural beauty and culinary delights.
