Embracing the Arctic Spirit

Today was a fantastic blend of outdoor adventure and culinary exploration here in Iqaluit. It’s amazing how much this Arctic town has to offer, and I'm so glad I get to experience it all with my friends. From hiking through territorial parks to savoring unique flavors, every moment was a new discovery.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Black Heart Café. The café is a cozy spot known for its vegan sandwich, bowls, and coffee drinks. I opted for a classic latte with oat milk, while my friends tried some of their breakfast sandwiches. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, perfect for fueling up before our big hike. It reminded me of some of the quirky cafes back in Berlin, where Mei and I often spend our Sunday mornings.

With our stomachs full and spirits high, we headed to Mallikjuaq Territorial Park. Located on the southwest coast of Baffin Island, the park is a place where nature and history converge in a stunning Arctic landscape. The name 'Mallikjuaq' means 'big wave' in Inuktitut, and the park spans two large islands facing each other across a narrow inlet. Part of the park sits on Dorset Island, home to the vibrant Inuit community of Cape Dorset, renowned for its traditional Inuit art.

The hike was incredible. The trails of Mallikjuaq and Dorset Islands lead to places used by Inuit over centuries. We chose the Waterfall Trail, which leads to a beautiful 6-meter waterfall. The landscape was starkly beautiful, with rocky islands rising out of the Hudson Strait. Even though it was August, the weather was crisp, and the wildflowers added a splash of color to the tundra. I made sure to capture the views with my camera, thinking about how much Lina would love to see these photos. She’s always fascinated by my travel stories and pictures.

The Arctic has a raw, untamed beauty that captivates the soul and makes you appreciate the simple things in life.

As we hiked, we kept an eye out for wildlife. Mallikjuaq is home to various birds, including Lapland longspurs, snow buntings, and horned larks. Although we didn't spot any caribou or arctic hares, just knowing they were around added to the excitement. The park is also rich in history, with archaeological sites offering clues to lives long past. We saw kayak stands, which were used to elevate the skin kayaks out of reach of hungry dogs, and tent rings, remnants of old campsites.

After a few hours of hiking, we were ready for lunch. We decided to try Perreault Food Truck, known for its fast food with a unique twist. The food truck captures the essence of fast food with a unique twist. I had heard great things about their poutine, a Quebec delicacy, and it did not disappoint. My friends tried their burgers, which were also delicious. What sets Perreault apart is its commitment to using fresh, local produce whenever possible. Eating there was a quick and satisfying experience, perfect for refueling after our hike.

In the afternoon, we explored the MAC African Market. This was a truly unique experience. The market offers a variety of African products that are hard to find elsewhere in the region. It’s more than just a convenience store; it’s a cultural hub where you can immerse yourself in the vibrant stories and heritage of African communities. I was impressed by the assortment of traditional foods, spices, and snacks. I even picked up a few souvenirs to bring back to Mei, knowing she would appreciate the unique flavors and cultural items.

It was interesting to learn that the MAC African Market had faced some challenges earlier this year when a fire affected their building. However, the owner, Ernesine Ngelah, is determined to bounce back, which is truly inspiring. Supporting local businesses like this feels good, especially knowing the impact they have on the community.

For dinner, we decided to try Hunter’s Market, a restaurant that celebrates both traditional Inuit dishes and contemporary global flavors. The restaurant has a warm and welcoming ambiance, and the decor reflects the unique heritage of Nunavut. I decided to try the Arctic Char, a local specialty, while my friends opted for some of the other dishes on the menu. The emphasis on fresh, locally-sourced ingredients made every bite a genuine taste of the North.

Hunter's Market has a fascinating story. It’s a family-run business that opened a few years ago, offering everything from Greek food to homemade burgers. The owners, the Mahmoud family, have been using home-based recipes passed down for over 30 years. It’s inspiring to see families pursuing their dreams and contributing to the community. We ended the evening with some local brews and artisanal coffees, reflecting on the day’s adventures.

As I sit here writing this, I can’t help but feel grateful for the experiences today. Exploring Mallikjuaq Territorial Park, savoring the flavors of Perreault Food Truck, discovering the unique offerings at MAC African Market, and enjoying a hearty dinner at Hunter’s Market – each moment was a highlight. Traveling with friends makes these experiences even more special, and I’m looking forward to what tomorrow brings.

Tomorrow, we’re planning to visit Arvia'juaq and Qikiqtaarjuk National Historic Site, and perhaps grab a drink at Elks' Lodge in the evening. It’s going to be another day of adventure and discovery here in beautiful Iqaluit. Good night from the Arctic!
