Discover the stunning landscapes of Katannilik Park, indulge in local flavors, and find Inuit treasures in Iqaluit with friends.
Arctic Adventures and Artistic Finds
Today was all about immersing ourselves in the natural beauty and cultural richness of Iqaluit. From exploring a stunning territorial park to savoring local cuisine and discovering unique Inuit art, it was a day filled with unforgettable experiences. And, as always, sharing it with my friends made it even more special.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Tim Hortons. It’s become a familiar comfort, a little piece of Canada we know and love, even here in the Arctic. Fueled up with coffee and pastries, we set out for Katannilik Territorial Park. The park’s name, meaning place of waterfalls in Inuktitut, certainly lived up to its promise.

The landscape was breathtaking. Rugged valleys, rolling hills, and the Soper River snaking through it all. The park stretches all the way from Frobisher Bay to Kimmirut, and has been used by Inuit as a travel route and hunting ground for centuries. Knowing that history added a layer of depth to the experience. We hiked along a portion of the Itijjagiaq Trail, a traditional Inuit route. Though it’s known as a snowmobile highway in the winter, in August it was perfect for hiking. The tundra was surprisingly vibrant, with wildflowers dotting the landscape. I tried to capture the vastness with my camera, but some things you just have to experience firsthand.
The land owns us, not the other way around.
We kept an eye out for wildlife, knowing that the park is home to caribou, Arctic foxes, and various bird species. While we didn't spot any wolves, we did see a few Arctic hares darting across the trail. The warmer temperatures in the Soper River Valley allow some unusual plants to grow, including tall willows and various berries. I made a mental note to come back in the fall for berry picking. I can only imagine what it must be like to traverse the entire 120km trail that connects Iqaluit to Kimmirut. Perhaps a trip for another year, but right now I am happy to enjoy this small section of it with my friends.
After our hike, we were ready for lunch. We stopped at Yummy Shawarma, a local spot known for its Middle Eastern cuisine. As someone who appreciates diverse culinary experiences, I was eager to try it. I opted for the beef shawarma sandwich, and it was delicious. The meat was flavorful, and the homemade sauces added a unique touch. It was a welcome change from the usual travel fare, and I could see why it's a favorite among locals and tourists alike. My friends tried the chicken wraps and falafel, and everyone was happy with their choices. It’s always a good sign when a restaurant is bustling with both locals and visitors; you just know you are in for a treat!

With our appetites satisfied, we ventured into the heart of Iqaluit to explore its artistic side. Our destination: Arctic Inuksuk, an antique store that celebrates Inuit culture and history. As we stepped inside, we were greeted by an array of authentic artifacts, from intricately carved sculptures to traditional tools and clothing. Each item seemed to carry a story, connecting us to the rich heritage of the Canadian Arctic.

I was particularly drawn to the inuksuk sculptures, the stone landmarks used by the Inuit for navigation and communication. They stand as symbols of community and continuity, guiding travelers across the vast Arctic landscape. I ended up purchasing a small soapstone carving of a polar bear, a reminder of the incredible wildlife that inhabits this region. Supporting local artists is important to me, and I was glad to find a piece that resonated with my experience here. There was a wide selection of art ranging from smaller pieces to the more expensive pieces. It is great that they have options for everyone.
Before dinner, I took some time to reflect on the day. It struck me how much this territory embraces its heritage. Iqaluit seamlessly blends the modern with the traditional. I am happy to see the Inuit culture is alive and well. It is so different from the fast-paced environment of Berlin. I do miss Mei and Lina, and think they would have enjoyed the shawarma. I will have to bring them back some Inuit art!
For dinner, we decided to try the Aqsarniit Hotel & Conference Centre. The hotel is known for its modern amenities and its restaurant, which features local cuisine. The reviews said the restaurant had amazing food, and a great atmosphere. The hotel itself was inspired by the beauty and tranquility of the Arctic and the warmth of the Inuit community. I thought it would be a good way to end the day. The Aqsarniit Restaurant did not disappoint. The menu had a mix of familiar dishes and local specialties. I chose a steak with a side of poutine. The steak was cooked perfectly, and the poutine was a comforting indulgence. My friends tried the Arctic char, a local fish, and were impressed by its delicate flavor. The service was friendly and efficient, and the atmosphere was relaxed. It was the perfect setting to recount our adventures from the day and make plans for tomorrow.

Tomorrow, we are planning to hike the Apex Trail, another scenic route near Iqaluit. I’m looking forward to more breathtaking views and perhaps another encounter with the local wildlife. And maybe afterwards, we will stop by the Nunavut Brewing Company for a drink. For now, it’s time to rest and recharge for another day of exploring this fascinating corner of the world. I am glad I packed my hiking boots!
What I saw today made me think of a quote I once read: “We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.” It’s a reminder to appreciate and protect the natural beauty around us, not just for ourselves but for future generations. I will keep this in mind as I continue my travels.
I hope my journey can inspire others to visit and see all the wonders of Iqaluit for themselves!
