Day 15: A Farewell to Iqaluit: Reflecting on Arctic Adventures
Join Jason's final day in Iqaluit, exploring local culture, savoring Arctic cuisine, and reflecting on an unforgettable journey with friends.
Saying Goodbye to the Arctic
As my 15-day Arctic adventure in Iqaluit draws to a close, I find myself filled with a mix of emotions. There's a sense of accomplishment for having experienced such a unique and remote part of the world, a tinge of sadness that this incredible journey is ending, and an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for the memories created with my friends. Today was all about soaking in the last moments, revisiting favorite spots, and picking up a few mementos to remind me of this extraordinary trip.
The day began, as many others had, with a comforting breakfast at Tim Hortons. It's funny how a familiar chain can feel like a local haunt when you're thousands of miles from home. I opted for a classic Canadian breakfast sandwich and a double-double, fueling up for a day of exploration. Mei would have loved the maple-flavored treats they had. It reminded me of our little Lina and how much she would have enjoyed the Timbits.
With a full stomach, I made my way to Iqaluit Square ᐃᖃᓗᐃᑦ ᓄᓇᕗᑦ. This public space, in front of the Elders' Centre, is more than just a square; it's a symbol of Iqaluit itself. The design, with its ellipse of stone and boulders pointing north, reflects the Inuit history and connection to the land. I spent some time simply sitting on the stone wall, observing the locals and soaking in the atmosphere. The square is a crossroads, a place where trails meet and the community gathers. I found it to be a peaceful spot, a place to reflect on my experiences in Nunavut.

>Travel is not about the destination, but about the journey and the memories we create along the way.
For lunch, my friends and I decided to revisit Yummy Shawarma. This Lebanese restaurant had quickly become a favorite during our stay. The aromas of spices and grilled meats were as inviting as ever. I went for the chicken shawarma, spiced and sliced off the spit. The combination of flavors, with the tangy pickled turnips and creamy tahini, was simply divine. Yummy Shawarma is more than just a place to eat; it's a cultural experience, a taste of Lebanon in the heart of the Arctic. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of these dishes back in Berlin, though I doubt I'll be able to find the same Arctic shrimp.

After lunch, I ventured to Ivalu Ltd. I was on a mission to find a special souvenir to bring back home. This gift shop is known for its unique items, showcasing the rich culture and artistry of Nunavut. From handcrafted jewelry to Inuit art, each piece tells a story. I spent a good hour browsing the shelves, admiring the craftsmanship and learning about the local artists. I finally settled on a small carving of a polar bear, a perfect reminder of my time in the Arctic. It was interesting to learn that Ivalu Ltd concentrates on promoting Nunavut sculpture and unique art items to galleries across Canada, the U.S. and around the world.

As the day waned, we gathered for our final dinner at Aqsarniit lounge. Located in the Aqsarniit Hotel, this lounge offers a unique, northern-inspired take on hospitality. The restaurant uses locally sourced ingredients to create meals with a signature Iqaluit flair. I opted for the Arctic char, a local delicacy. The fish was cooked to perfection, with a delicate flavor that melted in my mouth. The Aqsarniit lounge was the perfect place to reminisce about our adventures, share stories, and raise a glass to our unforgettable trip. It was fascinating to learn that the Aqsarniit Restaurant and Lounge offers guests locally sourced and sustainably made meals with a signature Iqaluit flair.

We talked about everything from our hike through Sylvia Grinnell Park to our visit to the Nunatta Sunakkutaangit Museum. We laughed about our attempts to pronounce Inuktitut words and our struggles to adapt to the Arctic weather. We shared our favorite moments, our biggest surprises, and our deepest reflections. As the evening wore on, a sense of melancholy settled over us. We knew that this chapter was coming to an end, but we also knew that the memories we had created would last a lifetime.
Tomorrow, I'll be heading back to Berlin, back to my life as a freelance IT consultant, back to my family. While I'm eager to see Mei and Lina, I'll also be carrying a piece of Iqaluit with me. This trip has been more than just a vacation; it's been a transformative experience. I've learned about a different culture, a different way of life, and a different perspective on the world. I've challenged myself physically and mentally, and I've grown as a person. I'm grateful for the opportunity to have explored this remote and beautiful corner of the world, and I'm excited to share my stories with others. I hope that my blog has inspired you to consider your own Arctic adventure. The world is full of incredible places waiting to be discovered, and Iqaluit is definitely one of them. Perhaps one day, I'll return to the Arctic, but for now, it's time to say goodbye. Qanuippit!
