Day 5: A Day of Maritime History and Opera Magic in Gothenburg
Discover Gothenburg's maritime past at Maritiman & experience the grandeur of the Göteborgsoperan. A day of culture, history & family fun!
Sailing Through History and Sound
Today in Gothenburg was a delightful blend of maritime exploration and operatic grandeur. It’s amazing how much a single day can offer when you’re open to the city's diverse experiences. From climbing aboard historic ships to being swept away by the beauty of the opera, it was a day filled with memorable moments for the whole family.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Hotel Flora, setting us up perfectly for the adventures ahead. Aino was particularly excited, having looked at the map and picked out all the boats she wanted to see. Markus, ever the pragmatist, made sure we had our reusable water bottles filled and a few extra snacks for Aino – a dad prepared for anything!

First on our itinerary was Maritiman, Gothenburg's floating maritime museum. It's hard to miss, located right on the Packhuskajen quay. We took a leisurely ten-minute walk from the hotel, enjoying the crisp morning air. The area is currently undergoing some renovations, but it didn't dampen our spirits. Reaching the museum, we were immediately greeted by the impressive sight of numerous historic ships bobbing gently in the water.

Maritiman is truly a unique experience. It's not just a museum; it's a chance to step back in time and explore the life of a seafarer. Aino was absolutely thrilled, running from ship to ship with boundless energy. We climbed aboard the destroyer Småland, the biggest warship in Scandinavia, and tried to imagine what life must have been like for the crew. The tight corridors and steep ladders were a bit challenging, but Aino handled them like a pro, declaring herself a fearless explorer.
We explored a submarine called Nordkaparen, where we saw the cramped conditions the crew lived in. Aino was fascinated and asked lots of questions about how the sailors managed in such a small space. Markus, with his software engineering background, was intrigued by the technology and engineering of the vessels. I found myself drawn to the stories of the people who had lived and worked on these ships, imagining their lives and adventures on the open sea. The museum thoughtfully mixes hands-on displays with educational information, making it interesting for all ages.
The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.
After a good three hours of exploring Maritiman, we were ready for lunch. We headed to Folk, a restaurant I'd read about that’s known for its vegetarian dishes and natural wines. It’s located inside the Folkteatern, not too far from the Opera house, which was perfect for our afternoon plans. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, and the menu offered a variety of interesting vegetarian options. We shared a few different dishes, including fried cauliflower with chervil mayonnaise and wax beans with goat cheese cream. Aino, surprisingly, loved the cauliflower! Markus and I enjoyed a glass of natural wine, a Chenin Blanc from Touraine, which was light and refreshing. It was a delightful meal, and we left feeling energized and ready for the opera.

The Göteborgsoperan is an architectural marvel, its modern design a striking contrast to the historic ships we had explored earlier in the day. We had booked tickets for a guided tour, eager to learn more about the inner workings of this prestigious venue. The tour was conducted in English and took us behind the scenes, revealing the magic that happens backstage. We explored the auditorium, with its stunning acoustics and elegant décor, and visited the workshops where costumes, sets, and props are created. It was fascinating to see the level of craftsmanship and artistry that goes into each production.

Aino was particularly captivated by the costume department, marveling at the elaborate designs and intricate details. She even got to try on a few hats, much to her delight. Markus, ever the tech enthusiast, was fascinated by the lighting and sound systems, peppering the guide with questions about the technology used in the performances. I was simply in awe of the entire operation, from the talented performers to the dedicated crew who work tirelessly behind the scenes.
After the tour, we decided to treat ourselves to a pre-dinner drink at BrewDog Göteborg. It's a Scottish-born UK brew pub chain, and I remembered reading that they have vegan options, which is always a plus. It was quite busy, with a lively atmosphere and a wide selection of craft beers. Markus, a beer aficionado, was in his element, sampling a few different brews. Aino enjoyed a non-alcoholic beverage, and I opted for a glass of wine. It was a fun and relaxed way to unwind after a busy day of sightseeing.

For dinner, we had reservations at Koka, a Michelin-starred restaurant known for its modern Swedish gastronomy. The restaurant focuses on using local ingredients, showcasing the best of what the west coast of Sweden has to offer. The atmosphere was intimate and elegant, with a relaxed vibe. We opted for the five-course tasting menu, eager to experience the chef's culinary creations. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The service was impeccable, with the staff providing detailed explanations of each course.

Aino, surprisingly, was quite adventurous with her choices, trying everything from lamb to mackerel. Markus and I savored each bite, appreciating the innovative combinations and the quality of the ingredients. It was a truly memorable dining experience, and a perfect way to end our day of exploration and discovery.
As we walked back to Hotel Flora, the city lights twinkling around us, I felt a deep sense of contentment. Today had been a perfect blend of culture, history, and family fun. We had explored the maritime past of Gothenburg, delved into the world of opera, and savored the flavors of modern Swedish cuisine. It was a day that will stay with us for a long time.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Gothenburg Museum of Art and the Röhsska Museum, diving deeper into the city's cultural offerings. We might also pop into Flying Tiger Copenhagen – Aino loves that shop! I’m also looking forward to a quiet moment to do some knitting. Until then, goodnight from Gothenburg!
