A Family Adventure in Jotunheimen National Park
Day 6: Scaling Besseggen: A Family's Triumph in Jotunheimen
Conquering Norway's Besseggen Ridge with family. A challenging hike with rewards, stunning views, and unforgettable memories in Jotunheimen.
A Day of Stone and Summit
Today was a day of contrasts, from delving into the geological wonders of Norway to challenging ourselves on one of its most iconic hikes. It was a day that tested our limits, strengthened our bonds, and left us in awe of the raw beauty that Jotunheimen has to offer.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Halne Fjellstugu. The traditional fare fueled us for the adventures ahead. It´s amazing that Halne Fjellstugu lies at 1,140 meters above sea level, close to the Hardangervidda National Park. I enjoyed the atmosphere and the views. I made sure to try the homemade traditional food, which I read is based on local produce.
After breakfast, we packed up our things and headed towards Lom, eager to visit the Fossheim Steinsenter. As a librarian, I have a soft spot for museums, and this one promised a unique glimpse into Norway's geological treasures. Aino was thrilled, too, especially when she learned about the Gratistippen, where kids can collect free stones. The Fossheim Steinsenter was indeed a fascinating place. It was more than just a museum; it was a geological journey through Norway's past. The sheer variety of minerals and gemstones was astounding, and I found myself completely engrossed in learning about their origins and properties. Aino, of course, made a beeline for the Gratistippen and emerged with a handful of sparkling treasures. Even Markus, who usually feigns indifference to such things, was captivated by the sheer scale of the collection. We spent a good couple of hours wandering through the exhibits, marveling at the beauty and diversity of the natural world.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are the ones that push us beyond our comfort zones, revealing hidden strengths and forging unbreakable bonds.Leaving Fossheim Steinsenter, we drove towards Gjendesheim, the starting point for our Besseggen hike. The weather was holding up, with glimpses of sunshine peeking through the clouds, but the air was crisp with a hint of autumn. September in Jotunheimen can be unpredictable, so we were prepared for anything. As we started our ascent, the magnitude of the task ahead became clear. Besseggen is no walk in the park; it's a challenging hike that demands both physical and mental endurance. The trail began relatively gently, winding its way through rocky terrain and offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Gjende lake was an amazing sight. Aino, ever the energetic one, skipped ahead, while Markus and I kept a steady pace, encouraging each other along the way.
As we climbed higher, the terrain became steeper and more challenging. There were sections where we had to scramble over rocks, using our hands for support. I must admit, there were moments when I questioned my sanity. The wind picked up, and the temperature dropped, making the climb even more arduous. But then I would look around at the breathtaking scenery – the towering peaks, the turquoise lakes, the vast expanse of wilderness – and I would find renewed motivation to keep going.
The most challenging part of the hike was undoubtedly the ridge itself. It was narrow and exposed, with steep drops on either side. I could feel my heart pounding in my chest as I carefully made my way across. Aino, surprisingly, seemed unfazed by the height, confidently navigating the rocky path. Markus, on the other hand, was a bit more cautious, his fear of heights evident in his every step. But we supported each other, offering words of encouragement and helping hands, until we finally reached the summit.
The sense of accomplishment that washed over us at the top was indescribable. We had conquered Besseggen! The views from the summit were simply spectacular – a 360-degree panorama of Jotunheimen's majestic beauty. We spent a good while soaking it all in, taking photos, and simply reveling in the moment. It was a moment that I knew we would cherish forever.
The descent was no less challenging than the ascent, but we were buoyed by our success and the stunning scenery. We finally reached the bottom, tired but exhilarated. As we drove back towards our campsite, we stopped at Valdres Gjestegård for a well-deserved lunch. The hearty meal was exactly what we needed to replenish our energy, and we devoured it with gusto.
Back at Lom, after freshening up at the tent, we decided to celebrate our achievement with a visit to Svingen Pub. The pub was cozy and inviting, and we enjoyed a round of drinks while reminiscing about our Besseggen adventure. Aino was thrilled to be allowed a sip of my non-alcoholic beer, feeling like a grown-up for once. I read that Svingen Pub is an institution in Beitostølen. It was the first real pub in the area and is known for live music.
As I sit here now, writing in my travel journal, I can't help but feel an immense sense of gratitude. Today was a day of challenges, triumphs, and unforgettable memories. We pushed ourselves to our limits, conquered a formidable peak, and strengthened our bond as a family. Jotunheimen, you have truly captured our hearts.
Tomorrow, we are planning to take it a bit easier. The itinerary includes a scenic river view and a drive along the Sognefjell Road, which I read is 1400 meters high. We will have breakfast at Skeistua and enjoy a packed lunch in Jotunheimen National Park. For dinner, we are planning to visit Bryggjehuset Kafe & Pub. We will also visit Sport 1 Lom, as I still need to buy a portable solar charger and extra batteries. I am really looking forward to tomorrow, but I will never forget today and scaling Besseggen. It was an awesome experience.
I wonder what tomorrow will bring. I am looking forward to finding out.
I also wonder if I should get a job at Fôr Restaurant, since I am a librarian. Or maybe FOWL Restaurant in London. I am really good at organizing things and providing good customer service. I am sure that I would be a great addition to either team.
