A Family Adventure in Jotunheimen National Park
Day 2: Scaling Giants and Scenic Routes: A Day Amidst Jotunheimen's Majesty
Conquering Galdhøpiggen & exploring Sognefjellet's views. A day of breathtaking heights, scenic drives, and Nordic flavors in Jotunheimen.
Reaching for the Roof of Norway
Today was a day of conquering literal heights and soaking in panoramic beauty. It’s a day that reminded me why we chose Jotunheimen for our family adventure – a place where the landscape itself tells ancient stories. The crisp mountain air, the vastness of the views, and the sheer physical challenge of it all created an unforgettable experience for all of us, even Aino, who continues to surprise me with her resilience.
Our day began early, a necessity when you're aiming to stand on the highest peak in Scandinavia. After a hearty breakfast at Bessheim Fjellstue og Hytter, we fueled up with traditional Norwegian fare – plenty of hearty bread, cheeses, and of course, strong coffee to prepare us for the ascent of Galdhøpiggen. The mountain air was already invigorating, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. I made sure we were all layered appropriately; even in September, the weather in the mountains can be unpredictable. I also triple-checked that I had the map and compass, ever the librarian, even in the wilderness.
The drive to the Galdhøpiggen trailhead was stunning in itself. The landscape was a tapestry of greens and browns, the autumn colors just beginning to paint the hillsides. As we gained altitude, the trees thinned, giving way to rocky terrain and expansive views. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe, a feeling that only intensified as we started our hike.
We opted for the Spiterstulen route, known as the normal route, which is considered non-technical and suitable for anyone with reasonable fitness. The hike was still challenging, with a significant elevation gain of around 1,300 meters. Aino, to my surprise, tackled the rocky terrain like a seasoned hiker, her little legs pumping with determination. Markus, ever the supportive husband, kept her spirits high with stories and encouragement. I found myself pausing frequently, not just to catch my breath, but to capture the breathtaking views with my camera.
The climb was a physical challenge, but the reward of standing on the roof of Norway, surrounded by a sea of peaks, was worth every step.
The trail was well-marked, but the terrain varied from smooth paths to boulder fields. There were a few patches of snow near the summit, a reminder that winter was not far off. I was thankful for my trekking poles, which provided extra stability on the steeper sections. As we neared the top, the wind picked up, and the temperature dropped. We bundled up in our warmest layers and pushed on, driven by the anticipation of the view from the summit.
And what a view it was! Standing on the top of Galdhøpiggen felt like being on top of the world. The panorama was simply breathtaking – a sea of jagged peaks stretching as far as the eye could see. We could see glaciers glistening in the distance and deep valleys carved by ancient ice. Aino was ecstatic, pointing out different landmarks and shouting with glee. We took photos, of course, but no image could truly capture the grandeur of the moment.
There's a small café at the summit, which offered welcome respite from the wind. We huddled inside, sipping hot chocolate and savoring the feeling of accomplishment. It was a moment of pure joy, a shared experience that strengthened our bond as a family.
The descent was tough on the knees, but the views were just as rewarding. We took our time, enjoying the scenery and reflecting on our achievement. Back at the trailhead, we were tired but exhilarated, our bodies aching but our spirits soaring.
With the hike behind us, we drove along the Norwegian Scenic Route Sognefjellet, Northern Europe's highest mountain pass. The drive itself was an experience, with hairpin turns and steep climbs offering dramatic vistas at every bend. The landscape transformed from rocky alpine terrain to lush valleys, a testament to the diverse beauty of Jotunheimen.
We stopped at the Sognefjellet Viewing Point, a strategically placed overlook that provides panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. The air was crisp and clean, the silence broken only by the occasional bird call. I took some time to simply soak in the view, letting the vastness of the landscape wash over me. Aino, always curious, explored the area with boundless energy, while Markus consulted his maps, eager to identify the different peaks.
As we drove, we passed by the Vegaskjelet viewpoint, with its keyhole-shaped platform that frames the mountains perfectly. I was particularly interested in seeing Knut Wold's stone sculpture at Mefjellet, designed to offer a different perspective on the mountain landscape. Every stop offered a new way to appreciate the raw beauty of Jotunheimen.
For lunch, we stopped at Lemonsjøen Fjellstue & Hyttegrend, a charming mountain lodge nestled by the beautiful Lemonsjøen lake. The setting was idyllic, the calm waters of the lake reflecting the surrounding mountains. We enjoyed a hearty meal of traditional Norwegian dishes, savoring the flavors of local ingredients. It was the perfect way to refuel after our morning adventure.
As evening approached, we made our way to Lom, a charming village known as the gateway to Jotunheimen National Park. We had reservations for dinner at BrimiBue, a restaurant that celebrates local cuisine with a modern twist. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, the décor reflecting the rustic charm of the region. The food was exquisite, each dish a work of art that showcased the flavors of Jotunheimen. I particularly enjoyed the salmon, which was fresh and flavorful, and the reindeer carpaccio, a local delicacy. Markus and I savored a glass of wine, while Aino enjoyed a special non-alcoholic pairing created by the chef.
After dinner, as the day wound down, Markus and I decided to check out Pøbben, a local bar known for its cozy atmosphere and local brews. It was a great spot to unwind and soak in the local culture.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Vettisfossen, one of Norway's tallest waterfalls, and hike the Hulderstigen trail. I am particularly excited to delve deeper into the folklore surrounding the Hulder, a mythical forest creature, and share those stories with Aino.
“The mountains are calling and I must go.” - John Muir. This quote encapsulates my feelings about today perfectly. Jotunheimen has a way of drawing you in, of challenging you physically and inspiring you spiritually. It’s a place where you can connect with nature, with your loved ones, and with yourself. And as I drift off to sleep tonight, I’m already dreaming of the adventures that await us tomorrow.
