A Day of Discovery

Today felt like stepping into a living postcard, a blend of cultural immersion and culinary indulgence that painted a vivid picture of Norway's heart. From exploring ancient traditions to savoring exquisite local flavors, it was a day of connection, discovery, and delightful surprises.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Hindsæter. The historic hotel, nestled amidst the stunning Jotunheimen scenery, served up a spread that was both simple and rich. I savored the taste of local, ecological produce, specializing in reindeer from the local reindeer company in Vågå. Markus enjoyed the selection of meats from an old local cattle breed, Urfe, which is kept outdoors during the summer season. Aino, of course, loved the freshly baked bread and local cheeses. Fuelled up and ready for the day, we set off to explore the cultural heart of Lom.

Our first stop was the Lom bygdamuseun. It was like stepping back in time, wandering through the old buildings and getting a sense of how life used to be in this region. Aino was particularly fascinated by the traditional costumes and the old farming equipment. I found myself drawn to the exhibits showcasing local crafts, imagining the hands that had created such intricate and beautiful objects. It's always grounding to connect with the past, to understand the roots from which the present has grown. As a librarian, I am always looking for ways to help Aino connect with history, and this was a great way to do it.

After immersing ourselves in history, it was time to treat our taste buds. We drove to Jotunheimen Fjellstue for lunch. The mountain inn offered a cozy atmosphere and stunning views of the surrounding landscape. We enjoyed a delicious meal made with fresh, local ingredients. Markus and I opted for traditional Norwegian dishes, while Aino chose something a bit more familiar. It was the perfect way to refuel after our museum visit and prepare for the afternoon's adventures.

Next on our list was DNT Fondsbu, a charming mountain hut nestled by Lake Bygdin. The drive there was breathtaking, with winding roads offering panoramic views of the Jotunheimen peaks. Arriving at Fondsbu, we were immediately enveloped in its warm and welcoming atmosphere. The hut exuded a sense of community, with hikers and travelers from all walks of life sharing stories and laughter. Although we weren't staying overnight, we enjoyed a cup of coffee and a slice of homemade cake in the cozy lounge, soaking in the ambiance and admiring the stunning views of the lake. Aino spent some time browsing the library, while Markus chatted with some fellow hikers about their adventures in the mountains.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Brimi Sæter for dinner. This renowned mountain farm and restaurant promised an authentic culinary experience, and it certainly delivered. We indulged in their signature Skråpå-tå menu, a four-course feast featuring local delicacies and traditional cooking methods. The atmosphere was enchanting, with the meal served in a rustic barn loft, complete with tabletop grills and the sounds of traditional folk music. We melted Seter cheese on the embers, pairing it with cured meats from Brimi Sæter's own livestock. It was a truly immersive and unforgettable dining experience, a celebration of Norwegian flavors and traditions.

Before heading back to our tent, we made a quick stop at Ysteriet, a local bar. We wanted to experience a bit of the local nightlife, even if just for a little while. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, with locals and tourists mingling and enjoying drinks. I savored a local beer, while Markus opted for a glass of wine. Aino, of course, enjoyed a refreshing juice. It was a perfect way to end our day, soaking in the vibrant energy of Lom before retreating to the tranquility of our campsite.

As I write this, nestled in our tent with the sounds of the Norwegian wilderness surrounding us, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences of today. It was a day of cultural immersion, culinary delights, and connection with family and nature. Jotunheimen continues to surprise and inspire us, and I'm already looking forward to what tomorrow will bring.

Tomorrow marks our last day in Jotunheimen. We plan to make the most of it by hiking to Besseggen and visiting Steinplassen. I've heard that the views from Besseggen are absolutely breathtaking, and I can't wait to experience them firsthand. We'll be having breakfast at BrimiBue, lunch at Diner 13, and dinner at Syndinstøga. And, of course, we'll need to stock up on supplies at Joker Luster before heading back towards Oslo. It's bittersweet to think that our adventure is coming to an end, but I know that the memories we've made here will last a lifetime.

As we prepare to bid farewell to Jotunheimen, I'm reminded of the simple joys of travel: exploring new cultures, savoring local flavors, and connecting with loved ones in the heart of nature. It's these experiences that make life so rich and meaningful, and I'm grateful for every moment of this incredible journey.

P.S. I almost forgot to mention the little mishap that occurred this morning! As we were packing up our breakfast supplies, I realized that I had forgotten the portable solar charger and extra batteries for the camera! Luckily, Markus had his charger, so we were able to share. However, I definitely learned my lesson: always double-check your packing list, especially when you're relying on technology in the wilderness!

Despite the slight chill in the air—September in Ringebu bringing temperatures between 33°F and 55°F—the warmth of the day’s memories keeps us cozy. The forecast suggests a few days of rain this month, but today, the skies were kind. As we drift off to sleep, I’m filled with anticipation for our final day in this magical place.
