Serenity and Culinary Delights on Naoshima
As my art-filled journey on Naoshima Island nears its end, I dedicated today to experiencing the quieter, more intimate aspects of this unique place. It was a day of simple pleasures, from savoring traditional tea to exploring community art spaces and indulging in the local culinary scene. I wanted to absorb the essence of Naoshima beyond its famous museums, and I think I managed to do just that.
maimai. I opted for the Naoshima Burger, a local favorite featuring fresh Hamachi (young yellowtail). The combination of the fluffy bun, the flavorful fish, and the unique tartar sauce was the perfect way to start the day. Sipping on fresh juice, I enjoyed the cozy atmosphere of the café, which is adorned with local artwork, a reflection of Naoshima's vibrant culture. It’s amazing how a simple burger can encapsulate the essence of a place! Maximilian would have loved this, he is a big burger fan, I will have to recreate this experience for him when I get back to Berlin.
Drink a Cup of Tea' attraction, a serene spot known for its exquisite tea selection and integration with the island’s art. Nestled amidst captivating sculptures and lush landscapes, this spot offered a unique opportunity to blend relaxation with cultural enrichment.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of moments.Naoshima Hall, a community center designed by architect Hiroshi Sambuichi. This beautifully nuanced building in Honmura, an old castle town, embodies the wisdom of the local way of life, blending seamlessly with nature. Sambuichi spent years studying the island's sun, wind, and water patterns to create a space that resonates with the local architecture. The hall features a large multipurpose space, a smaller community center, and a moss garden, all designed to serve both residents and tourists.Issen, a Kaiseki restaurant known for its sublime menu and beautiful views. I opted for the beef set, which was incredibly tasty and satisfying. The presentation was as impressive as the food itself, with each dish thoughtfully arranged to enhance the dining experience. While some say you're paying for the ambiance more than the food, I found the experience well worth it. The service was attentive, and the overall atmosphere made for a delightful midday treat.
Little Plum, a cozy café-bar near the I♥Yu bathhouse. This friendly spot, housed in a renovated marine container, had a relaxed atmosphere and a diverse menu of food and drinks. I enjoyed their house special dry curry, a flavorful and filling dish with fragrant spices.
New Olympia, a highly recommended sushi restaurant known for its delicious Japanese homemade meals and fresh sushi. The restaurant is run by a father-son team and has a tranquil, traditional ambiance with tatami floors. I opted for the chef's specialties, a series of dishes showcasing the freshest seafood and local ingredients. The sashimi was incredibly fresh, and the sushi was expertly prepared. The staff was friendly and welcoming, and they even surprised me with a small plate as a gift. It was the perfect way to end my culinary journey on Naoshima.
My Lodge Naoshima, I savored the memories of the day. From the tranquil tea ceremony to the community art space and the exquisite Japanese cuisine, it was a day of simple pleasures and profound experiences. Naoshima had revealed another layer of its charm, a quieter, more intimate side that resonated deeply with my soul. I am so grateful for the opportunity to explore this unique island and share its beauty with all of you.
