Day 11: A Day of History and Flavors in San Cristobal
Exploring the historical heart of San Cristobal de las Casas, savoring local cuisine, and discovering unique artisan crafts.
Echoes of the Past, Tastes of Today
Today was all about diving deeper into the soul of San Cristobal de las Casas. I wanted to truly understand its history and experience its culture, and I think I managed to do just that. From exploring historical landmarks to indulging in the local cuisine and discovering unique artisan crafts, it was a day filled with rich experiences that I'm excited to share.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante TULUC. I opted for a traditional Chiapaneco breakfast, which included eggs, black beans, and a generous serving of plantains. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. The coffee, rich and aromatic, provided the perfect kickstart. It's amazing how a simple breakfast can set the tone for the entire day.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I made my way to the Museo de San Cristóbal MUSAC - Palacio de Gobierno. Housed in what was once the town hall, this museum offered a fascinating glimpse into the history and culture of San Cristobal. The building itself is an architectural gem, blending historical roots with contemporary design.

Wandering through the exhibits, I learned about the city's colonial past, its indigenous heritage, and its more recent struggles and triumphs. The museum's collection of artifacts and artwork provided a tangible connection to the past, and I found myself lost in the stories they told. It was particularly interesting to see how the museum incorporated modern art installations alongside historical displays, creating a dialogue between the past and present.
After immersing myself in history at MUSAC, I decided to visit Casa Mazariegos Recinto Histórico. This historical building was originally the home of Captain Diego de Mazariegos, the founder of San Cristobal de las Casas in 1528. The house has served many purposes over the centuries, including a seminary, a bishop's residence, and a school for girls. Today, it functions as a convention center.

The architecture of Casa Mazariegos is stunning, with its adobe walls and wooden pillars reflecting the region's colonial heritage. Walking through its rooms, I could almost imagine what life was like during the early days of the city. It's incredible to think that this building has witnessed so much history and has played such a significant role in shaping the identity of San Cristobal.
Travel is more than seeing sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.
For lunch, I ventured to Restaurante Las Pichanchas, a place renowned for its traditional Chiapaneca cuisine and cultural performances. The restaurant's vibrant atmosphere immediately captivated me, with its colorful décor and the sounds of marimba music filling the air. I decided to try the sopa de pan, a local specialty, and it was absolutely delicious. The flavors were rich and complex, and it was clear that the dish had been prepared with love and care. I also enjoyed a traditional cochito chiapaneco, which was equally flavorful.

As I savored my meal, I was treated to a captivating performance of traditional Chiapaneca dances. The dancers, dressed in colorful costumes, moved with grace and energy, telling stories through their movements and music. It was a truly immersive experience that gave me a deeper appreciation for the culture of Chiapas. The energy in the restaurant was infectious, and I found myself tapping my feet and clapping along with the music.
In the afternoon, I decided to indulge in some retail therapy and visited Carmen Rion + Sna Maruch, a boutique that showcases the beautiful artisan crafts of the Chiapas highlands. The boutique is a collaboration between Mexican designer Carmen Rion and the women artisans of Sna Maruch, which translates to House of Maria in the local indigenous language.

I was immediately drawn to the intricate textiles, the vibrant colors, and the unique designs. Each piece told a story, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the region. I ended up purchasing a beautifully embroidered blouse, which I know I'll treasure for years to come. It's not just a piece of clothing; it's a work of art that represents the skill and creativity of the artisans who created it.
As the day drew to a close, I decided to unwind with a drink at Baruva Food&Drinks. This bar has a great ambiance and is known for its friendly staff and delicious food. I ordered a local craft beer and relaxed, reflecting on the day's adventures. The bar had a lively atmosphere, with locals and tourists mingling and enjoying the evening. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

For dinner, I chose Restaurante Al Sazón Que Me Toquen... This restaurant offers a mix of international and local cuisine in a charming colonial setting. I opted for the Tampiqueña, a dish that showcases the flavors of Mexico. The restaurant also features artwork by Mayan artist Juan Chawuk. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting.

As I ate, I thought about how lucky I was to be experiencing this beautiful city and its rich culture. It's moments like these that make travel so rewarding. The connections you make, the things you learn, and the memories you create are priceless.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Andador Turistico Miguel Hidalgo and visit the Diocesan Historical Archive. I'm also looking forward to trying new restaurants like TierrAdentro Restaurante for breakfast, BELIL SABORES DE CHIAPAS for lunch, and Cocoliche for dinner. And of course, I'll be checking out the local shops, including Karani-Art, and perhaps ending the day at BrujaBar.
San Cristobal de las Casas continues to surprise and delight me at every turn. It's a city that truly captures the essence of Mexico, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
It's interesting how travel changes you. Before I came to Berlin, I never imagined I'd be exploring the world solo. Maximilian has always been supportive, but this journey is something I needed to do on my own. It's empowering and eye-opening, and I can't wait to share more of my experiences with you all.
I'm also reminded of how much I miss the simple things, like a portable charger. I'll definitely need to pick one up tomorrow. And maybe a rain jacket, just in case. But for now, I'm content with the memories I've made today, and I'm excited for what's to come.
