Day 17: A Fond Farewell to San Cristobal: Embracing the Last Day's Charm
Reflecting on my final day in San Cristobal de las Casas, savoring local flavors, exploring hidden gems, and embracing the city's spirit.
Adios, San Cristobal!
As my adventure in San Cristobal de las Casas draws to a close, I find myself filled with a mix of nostalgia and contentment. Today was all about soaking in the last drops of this vibrant city, revisiting favorite spots, and discovering a few hidden gems I'd missed along the way. It's amazing how a place can feel like home in just a few weeks, and San Cristobal has certainly captured a piece of my heart.
Maya Pakal Restaurant. I'd heard so many good things about it, and it was just a short walk from Hotel Sombra del Agua. The cozy atmosphere and the promise of authentic Mexican cuisine were too tempting to resist. I settled into a cute little spot and ordered their famous three-course Mayan meal, which, at only 110 pesos, was an absolute steal. It included a glass of wine, which I thought was a nice touch! The food was solid, the service was fast and friendly, and the soundtrack was delightfully eclectic. What a great way to start the day!

Free Walking Tour of San Cristobal de las Casas. I’d seen flyers for it around town and figured it would be a great way to get a deeper understanding of the city's history and culture. The tour started at Plaza de la Paz, next to the wooden cross, and our guide, Louisa, was fantastic. She shared so many interesting stories and insights about the local people and their complex relationships and challenges. We explored the iconic Templo de Santo Domingo, admired its intricate baroque details, and wandered through the vibrant market nearby.

It was the perfect midday pause before diving back into exploring the city. I took a moment to wander down Guadelupe Street, soaking in the atmosphere and people-watching.
