Solo Exploration in San Cristobal de las Casas
Day 3: Diving Deep into Chiapas Culture: Textiles, History, and Mezcal
Exploring San Cristobal de las Casas' rich history at Museo de los Altos, vibrant textiles at Mundo Maya, and the local flavors of Chiapas.
A Day of Cultural Immersion
Today was a day dedicated to diving deep into the heart of Chiapas's rich cultural tapestry. I wanted to fully immerse myself in the history and artistry that San Cristobal de las Casas has to offer. From exploring ancient textiles to savoring local flavors, it was a day of discovery and connection.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at Casa Jasmine. This vegan restaurant is known for its lovingly homemade dishes, and I was excited to try their daily specials. The menu changes every day, which adds an element of delightful surprise. I opted for the Indonesian-inspired cuisine, and it was absolutely delicious—rice flour corn fritters with an exceptional peanut sauce, followed by a Vietnamese savory crepe filled with sprouts and spinach. It was the perfect start to a day of exploration, setting a vibrant and energetic tone. I made a mental note to try and recreate those fritters when I get back to Berlin; Maximilian would absolutely love them!

Fueled and ready, I headed to the Museo de los Altos de Chiapas Ex Convento de Santo Domingo. Housed in a beautifully restored colonial convent, the architecture itself was a sight to behold. The museum showcases a remarkable collection of ethnographic artifacts and traditional handicrafts, all celebrating the cultural heritage of the Chiapas region.

Walking through the museum, I was immediately struck by the way the colonial arches framed the engaging regional exhibits. The museum is in the Ex Convento de Santo Domingo, exemplifying the country's religious architecture. I explored exhibits detailing the geography and archeology of the Chiapas highlands, and objects from the region's pre-Hispanic textile tradition.
“The richness of a culture lies in its ability to preserve its past while embracing the future.”
Upstairs, within the same building, I found myself at the Centro de Textiles del Mundo Maya. This museum was a vibrant celebration of Mayan textiles from throughout Mexico and Central America. The displays featured over 500 examples of handwoven textiles, each telling a unique story through intricate designs and symbols. I was particularly fascinated by the huipiles (sleeveless tunics) and the videos demonstrating the creation of these materials and clothes. The textiles are powerful forms of artistic expression in modern Mayan communities, and represent the culture today.

I spent hours wandering through the exhibits, opening drawers to discover hidden gems and admiring the craftsmanship of the indigenous artisans. The museum thoughtfully groups textiles by linguistic roots, showcasing the diversity within Mayan communities. The displays included garments from Tojolabales, Choles, Tzeltales, and Tzotziles communities in Chiapas, as well as Quiches, Ixchiles, Cakchiqueles, Mames, and Kekchis communities in Guatemala. It was a truly immersive experience, highlighting the dedication of generations of women weavers who have preserved this art form.
After the museums, my feet were starting to ache, but my curiosity was still running high, so I headed over to Artesanias de los Altos de Chiapas. This shop was a treasure trove of local crafts, offering everything from textiles and pottery to amber jewelry and ironwork. It was a fantastic opportunity to support local artisans and find unique souvenirs. I picked up a beautifully embroidered table runner, its vibrant colors reflecting the energy of San Cristobal. I also found a small, hand-carved wooden figure, a whimsical reminder of my time here. The shop was bustling with activity, locals and tourists alike drawn to the colorful displays and the promise of authentic Chiapanecan craftsmanship.

For lunch, I ventured to El Caldero. This restaurant is celebrated for its authentic Mexican soups and hearty comfort food. The cozy ambiance and the aroma of simmering broths were incredibly inviting. I decided to try the Caldo de Chipilin, a traditional broth with chicharrones and rice. It was rich, flavorful, and incredibly satisfying – the perfect remedy for my museum-weary feet. The portions were generous, and the service was attentive, adding to the overall charm of the place. It was easy to see why El Caldero is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. I overheard some other tourists raving about the Aztec Soup, which is apparently served in a teapot.

As the afternoon waned, I found myself drawn to La Popu Mezcalería. This bar is known for its mezcal, its barrio atmosphere, and its lively nights. I decided to stop in for a pre-dinner drink. The mezcal selection was extensive, and the bartender was incredibly knowledgeable, guiding me through the different varieties. I settled on a smoky, complex mezcal that was new to me, and savored it slowly, enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of the bar. La Popu has a cozy atmosphere and sometimes features live music. The staff were welcoming and the prices were reasonable, making it a great spot to relax and soak in the local vibe.

For dinner, I chose Restaurante Sabor a mi. Located in the heart of San Cristobal, it boasts a lovely terrace where you can enjoy a variety of dishes, from pastas and pizzas to traditional Mexican cuisine. I opted for a classic: enchiladas with mole sauce. The flavors were rich and complex, and the portion was generous. The terrace provided a great view of the bustling streets below, making it a perfect spot to unwind and reflect on the day. It was a delightful end to a day filled with cultural exploration and culinary delights.
