Discovering San Cristobal's Charms
Today was a day of diving deep into the heart of San Cristobal de las Casas. After five days of exploring, I felt like I was finally getting a real sense of the city's rhythm, its stories etched in colorful walls and whispered in the bustling markets. Armed with my camera and a healthy dose of curiosity, I set out to uncover more of what makes this place so special.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at La Casa De Las Lolas. I had read rave reviews about their breakfast-almuerzo options, and I was not disappointed. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day with a delicious meal. I opted for the chilaquiles Imperiales, which were absolutely divine. The combination of flavors and the colorful presentation made it a feast for both the eyes and the palate. Paired with a strong cup of Chiapan coffee, it was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. I made a mental note to try and recreate this dish back in Berlin – Maximilian would love it!

With a full stomach and a spring in my step, I headed towards Casa De La Sirena. As I approached the corner of Insurgentes and Francisco I. Madero, the striking colonial architecture of the house immediately caught my eye. It’s hard to miss, really. This is the oldest house in the city, dating back to the 16th century. Built by Diego de Mazariegos, the conquistador who founded San Cristobal, it was later given to Andrés de la Tovilla.

The house is named for the carved stone mermaid (or perhaps a woman-serpent) that adorns one of its corners. There are several interpretations of the mermaid figures, one linking the mythological significance of sirens to the long periods and risks that European conquerors had to endure on the high seas to reach the New World. I spent a good while admiring the facade, taking photos of the intricate details – the blazon, the columns with their graceful lions, and the two-headed eagles. It’s a beautiful example of colonial architecture, and I could almost feel the history seeping from its walls.
Sometimes, the most rewarding travel experiences come from simply wandering, observing, and allowing yourself to be swept up in the everyday life of a place.
Next on my list was the Museo de Culturas Populares de Chiapas. Housed in a beautiful colonial building near Parque de La Merced, the museum aims to preserve and showcase the diverse cultural expressions of Chiapas. Inside, I found a fascinating collection of textiles, traditional clothing, masks, and other artifacts that offered a glimpse into the traditions and customs of the region’s indigenous communities. I was particularly drawn to the exhibits on local festivals and ceremonies, with their vibrant costumes and intricate rituals. It was a great way to gain a deeper understanding of the rich cultural heritage of Chiapas.

Leaving the museum, my stomach started to rumble again, signaling lunchtime. Based on a recommendation I found online, I decided to try Maya Pakal Restaurant. It turned out to be a real gem! This cozy little spot in the Centro offers a menu of Mexican cuisine at very fair prices. I opted for the menu Maya, a three-course meal that included a glass of wine for just 110 pesos. The food was delicious, the service was excellent, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was the perfect place to relax and refuel after a morning of sightseeing. I can see why Paul Brooks described it as his new favorite restaurante coleto!

After lunch, I felt like doing some shopping. I stumbled upon Na Casa Galería, a charming little shop that sells a variety of local crafts and artwork. I spent a happy hour browsing through the colorful textiles, ceramics, and jewelry, chatting with the friendly owner about the artists and their work. I ended up buying a beautiful hand-woven scarf as a souvenir for myself (and maybe a little something for my mother-in-law!).

As the afternoon wore on, I decided to treat myself to a pre-dinner drink at Pipiripau. This bar in Zona Centro is known for its lively atmosphere and eclectic mix of music. I ordered a margarita and settled in to watch the world go by. The bar was buzzing with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all enjoying the laid-back vibe. It was the perfect spot to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. The colorful artwork and cozy seating added to the inviting atmosphere.

For dinner, I had made a reservation at Restaurante Miura. This restaurant had come highly recommended, and I was eager to try it out. The menu features a variety of Mexican dishes, with a focus on grilled meats. I started with the guacamole, which was fresh and flavorful, followed by the rib eye. The meat was cooked to perfection, tender and juicy, and the grilled vegetables were a delicious accompaniment. The service was attentive, and the ambiance was cozy and romantic. It was the perfect ending to a wonderful day. It seems some have complained about the quality of meat, but I found it to be excellent.

As I walked back to Hotel Sombra del Agua, the city was bathed in the warm glow of streetlights. The air was filled with the sounds of music and laughter, and I couldn't help but smile. San Cristobal de las Casas had truly captured my heart. I am excited to see what tomorrow brings, especially the Free Walking Tour and a visit to Museo Jtatik Samuel. I might even pick up a few more souvenirs at Boutique El Camino de los Altos. I am also looking forward to trying LA PEREGRINA COCINA YUCATECA for breakfast, Restaurante Las Pichanchas for lunch, and Achiote Cochinita Pibil for dinner. I'm also planning to check out La Bohemia Resto Bar Karaoke for some evening fun. Another day, another adventure!

Back at the hotel, I opened my travel journal and began to write about my day. As I scribbled down my thoughts and impressions, I realized how much I had experienced in just a few hours. From exploring historical landmarks to savoring local cuisine to discovering hidden gems, San Cristobal de las Casas had offered me a glimpse into its soul. And as I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience this magical place. I am also grateful that I decided to leave my portable charger and rain jacket back in Berlin – forcing me to buy local replacements, and therefore supporting the local economy!
Tomorrow is Saturday, and I am hoping to find some local events taking place. Perhaps there will be some music or dancing to experience. I will also check out the events listings to see if there are any festivals or cultural celebrations happening.
