First Impressions of Cusco: A City Steeped in History

The air in Cusco is crisp and cool, a stark contrast to the bustling energy that vibrates through the city's ancient streets. Today marked the beginning of our Peruvian adventure, and I couldn't wait to dive into the heart of this historic city. Pieter and I were both eager to explore the blend of Inca and Spanish colonial architecture, and of course, sample some of the famed Peruvian cuisine. After months of planning from our cozy home in Delft, we were finally here, ready to immerse ourselves in the vibrant culture and breathtaking landscapes of Peru.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Jack's Café. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and home-style cooking was incredibly inviting. I opted for the vegan breakfast, while Pieter went for ‘el Gordo’ breakfast. Jack's Café is known for its western-style food, and it was a comforting start to our day, reminding us of familiar flavors even as we were thousands of miles away from home.

Fueled up and ready to explore, our first stop was Calle Loreto. As we walked along this narrow street, I was immediately struck by the towering Inca walls that lined both sides. The precision and craftsmanship of the stonework were awe-inspiring, a testament to the ingenuity of the Inca civilization. It felt like stepping back in time, walking between these ancient walls that once formed part of the Acllahuasi, the House of the Virgins of the Sun, and the palace of Wayna Capac. The history here is palpable, with every stone whispering stories of a bygone era.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet corners of a city, where history and culture intertwine.

Next, we ventured to the Sapantiana Aqueduct, a colonial structure built by the Jesuit Order in the 17th and 18th centuries. This aqueduct was an impressive feat of engineering, designed to channel water to the city. The architecture beautifully combines pre-Hispanic techniques with Spanish influences, a visible representation of Cusco's layered history. The aqueduct is set in a serene location, offering a tranquil escape from the city's hustle and bustle. The gentle flow of water and the surrounding greenery made it a perfect spot for reflection and photography.

For lunch, we chose Organika Restaurant, drawn in by its commitment to fresh, local ingredients. The restaurant sources its produce from its own farm in the Sacred Valley, ensuring the highest quality and supporting local farmers. I had the pumpkin ravioli, and Pieter enjoyed the quinoa risotto. The flavors were vibrant and fresh, a true celebration of Peruvian cuisine. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, making it a delightful midday retreat.

In the afternoon, we explored the Handicraft Center Cusco, a bustling hub of local artistry. The center is home to hundreds of stalls, each offering a unique array of handmade treasures. From intricately woven textiles to colorful ceramics and jewelry, the variety was astounding. I was particularly drawn to the alpaca wool clothing, and Pieter admired the detailed silverware. We picked up a few souvenirs, supporting local artisans and taking home a piece of Peruvian culture. I bartered for a colourful woven blanket, a skill I learned at the Delft markets, and Pieter found a beautiful silver pendant depicting the Chakana, the Inca cross.

As evening approached, we made our way to Chicha por Gaston Acurio for dinner. This restaurant, helmed by one of Peru's most celebrated chefs, Gaston Acurio, offers a modern take on traditional Peruvian dishes. The ambiance was elegant yet relaxed, and the service was impeccable. We started with the ceviche, followed by the grilled octopus and chicharron. Each dish was a culinary masterpiece, bursting with flavors and textures that delighted our senses. It was the perfect end to a day filled with exploration and discovery.

One of the highlights of the day was simply wandering through the streets of Cusco, soaking in the atmosphere and observing daily life. The city is a vibrant mix of old and new, with traditional markets alongside modern shops, and ancient ruins blending seamlessly with colonial architecture. The people are warm and welcoming, always ready with a smile and a friendly greeting.

The weather in Cusco in October is quite mild, with temperatures ranging from the mid-40s to the high 60s. We packed layers, which proved to be a wise decision as the temperature fluctuated throughout the day. While it was mostly sunny, there was a chance of rain, so we were prepared with our rain jackets. It's amazing to be here during the Fiesta de San Francisco, adding a layer of cultural richness to our visit. The religious ceremonies, music, and dances in the main square were a vibrant spectacle.

Of course, no day is perfect, and I did realize I'd forgotten a portable phone charger. Pieter, ever the prepared one, reminded me that I also forgot the travel adapter, so we made a mental note to pick them up tomorrow.

As I reflect on our first day in Cusco, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and excitement. This city is a treasure trove of history, culture, and culinary delights, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. Tomorrow, we are planning to visit Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain. The thought of witnessing the vibrant colors of the mountain is exhilarating, and I am eager to share that experience with you all. For now, goodnight from Cusco!
