Finding Joy in the Heart of Cusco

Today was a day of gentle exploration, a chance to soak in the quieter corners of Cusco and let the city's charm wash over us. Olivia and I started our day with a sense of anticipation, ready to discover what hidden gems lay waiting. It’s amazing how even after nearly two weeks here, Cusco continues to surprise us with its blend of history and vibrant modern life.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at LOCAL Restaurante. I'd heard whispers about their trout, and it didn't disappoint. Olivia opted for the mushroom pizza, which she declared was the best she’d had in ages. The cozy atmosphere and friendly service set the perfect tone for the day. Fuelled up, we set off towards San Cristobal, a spot I was particularly keen to visit for its panoramic views of the city.

The climb to San Cristobal was a bit of a workout, the high altitude reminding us that we weren't in Toronto anymore. But every step was worth it. As we reached the top, the vista unfolded before us – a sprawling tapestry of red-tiled roofs, church spires, and the verdant hills that cradle Cusco. The church itself, simple yet steeped in history, offered a moment of quiet reflection. It was built on land donated by Cristóbal Paullo Inca, intertwining colonial and Inca history in one place. Wandering around the square, we took countless photos, trying to capture the essence of this breathtaking panorama.

Sometimes, the greatest discoveries are not the grand monuments, but the quiet corners where you can truly feel the pulse of a place.

Next on our itinerary was Plaza Regocijo, a square known as 'Kusipata' in Quechua, meaning 'square of joy'. It certainly lived up to its name. Stepping into the plaza felt like entering a more relaxed world, a stark contrast to the bustling Plaza de Armas. The square was alive with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the pleasant atmosphere. We sat by the fountain, watching children play and soaking in the colonial architecture that framed the square. According to some sources, the square has been a key part of Cusco life since the Inca times. Apparently, it was also where Cusco declared its independence in 1821!

For lunch, we decided on Rucula Peruvian Restaurant, enticed by its promise of organic ingredients and traditional flavors. The alpaca anticucho appetizer was a revelation – tender, flavorful, and unlike anything we’d tasted before. Olivia chose the seafood rice, which she compared to a Peruvian paella, while I savored the trout in pesto gnocchi. The pisco sours were a refreshing complement to our meal, adding a zesty kick. Rucula really lived up to its reputation; the service was impeccable, and the food was a delightful fusion of traditional and contemporary Peruvian cuisine. It's those little discoveries that make travelling so special.

After lunch, Olivia and I strolled through the shops around Plaza de Armas, eventually finding ourselves at KUNA. Olivia was on the hunt for a baby alpaca scarf, and KUNA didn't disappoint. The shop assistant was incredibly helpful, explaining the different types of alpaca wool and helping Olivia choose the perfect piece. It’s fascinating to learn about the craftsmanship and heritage behind these textiles, each piece telling a story of Andean tradition. We learned that KUNA actually oversees the entire production process, linking ancient traditions with modern technology. I even managed to pick up a small, woven tapestry to remind me of our time here.

As the afternoon waned, we sought refuge from the setting sun at Papacho Bar Cultural. The bar had a relaxed, bohemian vibe, with live music filling the air. We ordered a couple of Chilcanos, a pisco-based cocktail similar to a Moscow Mule, and settled in to enjoy the ambiance. It was the perfect spot to unwind and reflect on our day of exploration. The atmosphere was laid-back, and the live music added a vibrant touch to the evening. Olivia particularly enjoyed the cultural aspect, noting how the bar seemed to embrace local art and music.

For dinner, we ventured to Fuego, Burgers and Barbecue Restaurant, a place recommended for its American-style comfort food with a Peruvian twist. I opted for the Cuban sandwich with pulled pork, while Olivia chose one of their signature burgers. The portions were generous, and the flavors were satisfying. It was a nice change of pace after days of traditional Peruvian cuisine. Plus, the restaurant had a lively atmosphere, and we enjoyed chatting with some fellow travelers.

As we walked back to Hotel Polo Corporativo, the city was quiet, the sounds of the day fading into a gentle hum. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day. Tomorrow marks the end of our Cusco adventure. We plan to visit the Cusco Historical Center and Museo Casa Concha. We might even sneak in a few last-minute souvenir shopping at La Galeria Cusco before heading to La chupiteria the shot bar for a final toast to this incredible city.
