Reaching New Heights in Machu Picchu

Today was all about pushing my limits, both physically and mentally, as Olivia and I tackled the legendary Huayna Picchu. This majestic peak, which looms over Machu Picchu, promised unparalleled views and a thrilling challenge. Little did I know just how rewarding, and exhausting, the day would be.

After a hearty breakfast at DEVA - Cocina Andina, fueling up with traditional Andean flavors, we made our way to the entrance of Machu Picchu. The air was crisp, and the anticipation was palpable as we joined the queue for Huayna Picchu. I double-checked our tickets, a crucial step since only a limited number of hikers are allowed each day. The early morning mist added an air of mystery to the already awe-inspiring citadel.

The ascent began deceptively gently, with a few gradual slopes that lulled us into a false sense of security. However, it wasn't long before the trail transformed into a relentless series of steep, uneven stone steps. I quickly understood why Huayna Picchu is considered a moderately difficult to difficult hike. The steps, carved centuries ago by the Incas, were often narrow and uneven, demanding careful footing and a good dose of stamina. Olivia, ever the determined one, took the lead, her auburn hair bouncing as she navigated the challenging terrain.

The higher we climbed, the more breathtaking the views became. Machu Picchu unfolded beneath us, a sprawling tapestry of ancient stonework nestled amidst verdant mountains. The Urubamba River snaked through the valley below, a silver ribbon winding its way through the landscape. We paused frequently, not just to catch our breath, but to soak in the panoramic vistas. The altitude, however, was a constant reminder that we were ascending to nearly 9,000 feet above sea level. Each step required more effort, and I found myself relying on my hiking boots more than ever. I was glad I hadn't forgotten them like I did the sunscreen and hat!

The views from the summit of Huayna Picchu are a testament to the ingenuity and vision of the Inca civilization, a breathtaking reward for a challenging climb.

There were moments during the climb when I questioned my sanity. The infamous Stairs of Death, a particularly steep and exposed section of the trail, tested my fear of heights. With sheer drops on either side, I gripped the safety cables tightly, focusing on each step and trying to ignore the dizzying void below. Olivia, unfazed, offered words of encouragement, her calm demeanor helping me push through the most nerve-wracking parts of the ascent. I remember thinking to myself that this was a far cry from my comfortable data analyst job back in Toronto, but the challenge was exhilarating.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, we reached the summit. The sense of accomplishment was immense. The 360-degree views were simply stunning. From our vantage point, we could see the entire Machu Picchu complex, the surrounding mountains, and the distant valleys. We spent a good half-hour at the top, savoring the moment and taking countless photos. It was a truly unforgettable experience, a testament to the enduring legacy of the Inca civilization.

The descent was equally challenging, requiring careful navigation of the steep steps. My knees protested with every step, and I was grateful for my hiking poles, which provided much-needed stability. We encountered other hikers along the way, sharing smiles and words of encouragement. There was a shared sense of camaraderie among those who had conquered Huayna Picchu.

Back in Aguas Calientes, weary but exhilarated, we treated ourselves to a well-deserved lunch at KUSYKAY Peruvian Craft Food. The restaurant came highly recommended, and it did not disappoint. I opted for the Lomo Saltado, a classic Peruvian dish of stir-fried beef, onions, tomatoes, and potatoes, while Olivia savored the Ají de Gallina, a creamy chicken stew. The flavors were rich and satisfying, the perfect reward after our strenuous hike. The service was impeccable, and the staff were eager to share their knowledge of Peruvian cuisine and culture. What a perfect way to recharge.

Later in the afternoon, after a brief rest at Hotel Polo Corporativo, we ventured into the San Blas neighborhood, known for its artisan workshops and vibrant atmosphere. We stumbled upon EKEKOS SAN BLAS -art & COLORS, a charming shop filled with colorful handicrafts and traditional Peruvian art. I was immediately drawn to the intricate ceramics and the vibrant textiles. Olivia, with her keen eye for design, admired the hand-painted retablos, miniature altarpieces depicting scenes from everyday life. We purchased a small ceramic Ekeko, the Andean god of abundance, as a souvenir, a reminder of our incredible journey.

As evening approached, we sought a place to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. We decided to visit El Duende Resto Lounge, a cozy bar with a reputation for its lively atmosphere and creative cocktails. The bar was dimly lit, adorned with eclectic décor and filled with the sounds of laughter and conversation. We ordered a couple of Pisco Sours, the national drink of Peru, and settled into a comfortable corner.

It was a day filled with unforgettable experiences, a testament to the magic and allure of Cusco.

For dinner, we ventured to Indigo Bar Restaurant, drawn in by its promise of Thai and Peruvian fusion cuisine. The atmosphere was cosmopolitan and inviting, and the menu offered a tempting array of dishes. I opted for the Pad Thai, while Olivia chose the Yellow Curry with tofu. The food was flavorful and well-prepared, a satisfying end to a long and eventful day. We chatted with a friendly couple from Australia, sharing travel stories and tips. It was a reminder of the global community that converges in Cusco, drawn by its rich history and vibrant culture.

As we walked back to Hotel Polo Corporativo, the city was alive with music and energy. The sounds of Andean flutes and Spanish guitars filled the air, and the streets were bustling with locals and tourists alike. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this incredible place, to immerse myself in its culture and history. Tomorrow, we're off to Pisac and the Salt Mines of Maras. Olivia is already excited about visiting Real Plaza Cusco for some shopping. I'm looking forward to what new adventures await us.

Today was a day of conquering challenges, savoring flavors, and discovering hidden gems. Huayna Picchu tested my physical limits, but the reward was well worth the effort. Cusco continues to surprise and delight, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
