A Day Among Gods and Mortals

Today was a day of epic proportions, a journey through time that blended the grandeur of ancient Greece with the vibrant pulse of modern Athens. It’s funny, isn't it? How a city can hold so much history within its streets, each stone whispering tales of gods, emperors, and ordinary people. I set out this morning with a sense of anticipation, ready to explore more of what this incredible city has to offer, and Athens certainly didn't disappoint.

My day began with breakfast at the V1935 Roof Garden. Perched high above the city, the restaurant offered not only a delightful meal but also a stunning panoramic view. The Acropolis stood majestically in the distance, bathed in the soft morning light. I took my time savoring the flavors of my breakfast, a traditional Greek yogurt with honey and nuts, while soaking in the serene atmosphere. The staff were incredibly friendly, making me feel welcome and relaxed. It was the perfect start to a day filled with exploration.

From there, I ventured towards the Temple of Olympian Zeus. As I approached the site, the sheer scale of the remaining columns was awe-inspiring. It's hard to imagine the temple in its full glory, with 104 colossal columns reaching towards the sky. Construction began in the 6th century BC, but it wasn't completed until the reign of Roman Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD. Standing there, surrounded by these ancient ruins, I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to the past. I imagined the bustling activity that once filled this sacred space, the rituals performed, and the reverence paid to the king of the gods, Zeus.

The past is never dead. It's not even past.

Just a short walk from the Temple of Olympian Zeus, I encountered the Arch of Hadrian. This monumental gateway, resembling a Roman triumphal arch, marked the boundary between the ancient city of Theseus and the new city of Hadrian. Built in 131 or 132 AD, the arch was a tribute to Emperor Hadrian and his benefactions to Athens. Two inscriptions adorn the architrave, one on each side. One reads, This is Athens, the ancient city of Theseus, while the other proclaims, This is the city of Hadrian, and not of Theseus. The arch stands as a symbol of the unity and mutual influence of Roman and Greek cultures during Hadrian's reign. It's a beautiful structure, crafted from Pentelic marble, and a testament to the enduring legacy of both civilizations.

Next on my itinerary was the Zappeion Hall, a stunning neoclassical building located in the heart of Athens. Designed by Danish architect Theophil Hansen, the Zappeion was constructed in the late 19th century to revive ancient Greek ceremonies and contests. It has played a significant role in the history of Greece, hosting numerous important events, including the signing of the documents formalizing Greece's accession to the European Community in 1979. As I wandered through the halls, I could feel the weight of history and the echoes of countless gatherings and celebrations.

After immersing myself in history, it was time for lunch. I made my way to Aspro Alogo, a traditional Greek restaurant known for its authentic cuisine and warm atmosphere. Tucked away from the bustling tourist area, this charming taverna offered a true taste of Greece. I ordered the souvlaki, a classic Greek dish of grilled meat skewers, and it was absolutely delicious. The flavors were rich and savory, and the meat was cooked to perfection. The owner was incredibly welcoming, making me feel like a local. It was a delightful culinary experience that I won't soon forget.

In the afternoon, I decided to indulge in some retail therapy at the Benaki Museum Shop. Located within the Benaki Museum of Greek Culture, the shop offers a curated selection of unique gifts and souvenirs. From handcrafted jewelry to traditional textiles, each item reflects the artistry and craftsmanship of Greece. I picked up a beautiful ceramic bowl, adorned with ancient Greek motifs, as a memento of my trip. It's a small piece of Athens that I can take home with me, a reminder of the rich culture and history I've experienced here.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to GH Attikos Restaurant for dinner. Situated near the Acropolis, this rooftop restaurant offered breathtaking views of the illuminated Parthenon. The ambiance was romantic and elegant, the perfect setting for a memorable meal. I savored the flavors of my dinner, a traditional Greek salad followed by grilled lamb, while gazing at the iconic landmark. The staff were attentive and friendly, ensuring that my dining experience was exceptional. It was a magical end to a day filled with discovery and wonder.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Athens has to offer. From ancient temples and monumental arches to neoclassical buildings and traditional tavernas, the city is a treasure trove of history, culture, and culinary delights. I'm grateful for the opportunity to explore this incredible city and to share my experiences with you. I didn't forget sunscreen today, thankfully, but a hat would have been welcome in the afternoon sun.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Philopappos Hill, Pnyx Monument, and Areopagus Hill, seeking more panoramic views and historical insights. I might even check out Couleur Locale for a drink in the evening, as I hear it has a great atmosphere. Until then, goodnight from Athens!

It's amazing how much history is packed into every corner of this city. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures!

I must admit, traveling solo has its perks. It allows me to fully immerse myself in the experience, to wander at my own pace, and to discover hidden gems that I might have missed otherwise. While I miss Olivia, my wife, I know she would have loved exploring Athens with me. Perhaps we can plan a trip together in the future. For now, I'll continue to share my solo adventures and insights with you all.

I am ending my day with great memories, I hope you enjoyed reading about it, and I hope it inspires you to visit Athens yourself!

I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!

Until then, farewell!
