Day 6: Orchids, Burgers, and Bula Smiles: A Day of Fijian Delights
Exploring Fiji's beauty at the Garden of the Sleeping Giant, savoring local cuisine, and shopping for Fijian treasures. A perfect day!
A Day of Gardens, Grub, and Gifts
Today was a vibrant mix of natural beauty, local flavors, and finding the perfect mementos to remember our Fijian adventure. It’s days like these that make traveling so special, when you can immerse yourself in the local culture and create memories that will last a lifetime.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Stallion Fastfood in Cuvu. I know, I know, fast food might seem like an odd choice when you're surrounded by exotic cuisine, but sometimes you just need a good burger to kickstart your day, especially when traveling with Sailosi. It's a reliable spot that caters to both locals and tourists, offering a diverse menu from traditional Fijian dishes to those familiar fast-food favorites. It was a quick and satisfying start, fueling us up for our first adventure: the Garden of the Sleeping Giant.

The Garden of the Sleeping Giant was truly a sight to behold. As we drove towards the mountains, the air grew cooler, a welcome change from the coastal humidity. Named for the mountain range that resembles a sleeping giant, the garden was once the private collection of the late American actor Raymond Burr. Now, it’s a sprawling oasis of tranquility, showcasing over 2,000 varieties of orchids and other exotic plants.
Walking through the canopy-covered boardwalk, we were immediately enveloped in a world of vibrant colors and intoxicating scents. The orchids were the stars of the show, of course, with their delicate petals and intricate designs. I'm no botanist, but even I could appreciate the sheer variety and beauty of these blooms. Sailosi was particularly fascinated by the lily ponds, teeming with frogs and dragonflies. He tried to count the frogs, but they kept hopping away, much to his amusement.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of moments, like wandering through a garden with loved ones.
Mere and I took our time, admiring the meticulously landscaped lawns and the dense rainforest that formed the backdrop. It was a peaceful escape, a chance to reconnect with nature and each other. The garden truly lives up to its reputation as a must-see spot, a botanic bonanza that captivates with its remarkable beauty.
After our floral immersion, we headed to Sailor's Beach Fiji Restaurant and Bar for lunch. Located right on Wailoaloa Beach, this spot offered stunning views of the ocean. The sea breeze was invigorating, and the sound of the waves crashing against the shore created a soothing soundtrack to our meal. I opted for some fresh seafood, while Mere chose a Fijian-style curry. Sailosi, predictably, went for the fish and chips. The food was delicious, and the service was warm and welcoming. It was the perfect place to unwind and soak up the Fijian vibes.

After lunch, we decided to do some souvenir shopping at My Fiji Store. I wanted to find something special to bring back home, something that would remind us of our time here. The store was a treasure trove of local crafts, from hand-carved wooden sculptures to vibrant textiles. I was particularly drawn to the Fijian Bongo Chilli Sauce, Kata Fiji Bongo Chilli Sauce, and the South Seas Salt. They were very unique and a great way to support Fijian farmers. Mere found a beautiful piece of jewelry made from local pearls, and Sailosi picked out a small wooden carving of a Fijian warrior. It's a charming e-commerce service that provides tourists with an incredible selection of souvenirs. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, making our shopping experience even more enjoyable. I think we succeeded in finding a few treasures to remind us of our time here.

For dinner, we decided to try The Tipsy Italian (FIJI). Located in Maui Bay, this place came highly recommended for its authentic Italian cuisine. As someone who appreciates a good pizza, I was eager to see if it lived up to the hype. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint! The crust was perfectly crispy, the toppings were fresh and flavorful, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. I went for the Maui Bacon Pizza, which had tomato sauce, cheese, bacon, garlic, fresh tomato, and oregano. It was absolutely delizioso! Mere opted for a pasta dish, and Sailosi, surprisingly, chose the lasagna. We all left feeling satisfied and content.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back to the Coral Coast, reflecting on the day's adventures. We had explored a stunning garden, savored delicious local cuisine, and found the perfect souvenirs to remember our trip. It was a day filled with laughter, discovery, and connection. As we prepare for tomorrow's adventures—a visit to Thurston Gardens and Koroyanitu National Park are on the cards—I can't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to share my homeland with my family.
Tomorrow, we're planning to explore Thurston Gardens and Koroyanitu National Park. Thurston Gardens is known for its botanical beauty and historical significance, while Koroyanitu National Park offers a chance to hike through lush rainforest and experience Fiji's natural wonders. We'll be sure to pack our hiking boots and plenty of water!
I'm also hoping to check out Vakavanua, a local bar, in the evening. It's always fun to experience the nightlife and meet some of the locals. Plus, I hear they have some great Fijian beers on tap.
I'm looking forward to another day of adventure and discovery in beautiful Fiji. Vinaka vakalevu!
Back in Vancouver, I often find myself missing the warmth and vibrancy of Fiji. It's more than just a place; it's a part of me. Sharing this with my family, seeing them connect with our heritage, makes this trip all the more special. It's a reminder of where we come from, and a celebration of who we are.
As I drift off to sleep, I can still smell the fragrant orchids, taste the delicious pizza, and feel the warmth of the Fijian sun on my skin. These are the moments that make life worth living, the memories that we'll cherish forever. And I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
Until then, moce mada! (good night!)
