A Day Steeped in History

Today was a day of exploration and reflection, a journey back in time as I continued my trek through the Choquequirao region. The air was crisp, the sun was shining, and I felt an invigorating sense of anticipation for what the day would bring. It's days like these that remind me why I set out on this solo adventure in the first place, to immerse myself in the history and culture of this incredible land.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Aqllawasi Chichería - Museo. What a charming spot! The atmosphere was so authentic, and the food gave me a real taste of Cusco's culinary heritage. Fuelling up with traditional Peruvian fare was the perfect way to prepare for a day of hiking and exploration. It reminded me of the simple, yet satisfying meals Mere makes back home, always filled with love and the warmth of our Fijian traditions.

With a spring in my step, I set off to explore Machu Andén. The ingenuity of the Inca people never ceases to amaze me, and seeing these ancient agricultural terraces carved into the mountainside was truly awe-inspiring. It's incredible to think about how they were able to cultivate crops in such a challenging environment. As I wandered through the terraces, I couldn't help but imagine the generations of farmers who had toiled on this land, their lives intertwined with the rhythms of nature. It made me reflect on my own connection to the land, growing up in Navua, where agriculture was a way of life. I thought about Sailosi, and hoped he would learn to appreciate the land as well.

The past whispers secrets to those who listen closely, and today, I felt like I was finally beginning to understand the story of this ancient land.

Next on my itinerary was the Puerta Del Sol, or the Sun Gate. The hike up to the gate was challenging, but the panoramic views from the top were well worth the effort. Standing there, high in the Andes, with the sun warming my face, I felt a profound sense of connection to the landscape. The Puerta Del Sol is more than just a stone structure; it's a portal to another time, a place where the past and present converge. I learned that the Puerta del Sol was built on a mountain ridge and acted as a checkpoint for those entering and exiting Machu Picchu. The Incas aligned the gate to capture the sun's rays during the summer solstice.

For lunch, I stopped at Chull's - Peruvian Cuisine & Craft Beer. I decided to try the local specialty, guinea pig, as I'd read many great reviews. It was definitely an experience! The flavors were unique, and I'm glad I stepped outside my comfort zone to try something new. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff was incredibly friendly. It reminded me of the community spirit we have back in Fiji, where everyone is welcomed with open arms. I washed the guinea pig down with some local craft beer; Chull's has a great selection.

As the afternoon wore on, I made my way back to Cusco, eager to sample more of the city's culinary offerings. For dinner, I chose Inka Wasi Restaurant. The restaurant specializes in traditional Cusco and Peruvian dishes. It was the perfect place to end a day of exploring the region's rich history and culture. The flavors were bold and authentic, and the ambiance was warm and inviting. I savored every bite, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such incredible food.

To cap off the evening, I ventured to Republica Del Pisco - Cusco. I enjoyed a couple of Pisco Sours while listening to live music. The bar had a lively atmosphere, and it was the perfect place to unwind after a long day of hiking and sightseeing. Sipping on my drink, I reflected on everything I had seen and experienced today. The Choquequirao Trek is more than just a physical challenge; it's a journey of discovery, a chance to connect with the past and appreciate the beauty of the present. I made sure I tried a Pisco Sour with coca leaves, which are supposed to help with altitude.

Tomorrow, I plan to revisit the Choquequirao Trek 2018 and Saqsaywaman. I'm also planning on having breakfast at Chicha por Gaston Acurio and lunch at SUMAQCHA RESTAURANT. To end the day, I intend to visit Artesanias Intichay to buy some souvenirs for Mere and Sailosi.

As I write this, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences I've had today. This solo adventure has been a chance for me to reconnect with myself and to appreciate the beauty of the world around me. I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings, and I know that the Choquequirao Trek will continue to challenge and inspire me in ways I never thought possible.

I am truly grateful for this experience, and I am looking forward to sharing more of my adventures with you all. Vinaka vakalevu!
