Immersing Ourselves in San Cristobal's Soul

Today was all about diving deeper into what makes San Cristobal de las Casas so special. Lena and I set out to explore both its cultural roots and its natural beauty, and let me tell you, it didn't disappoint. From historical houses to orchid-filled reserves, our day was a vibrant tapestry of experiences.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Maya Pakal Restaurant. Lena opted for some traditional huevos rancheros, while I went for the *sopa de médula* (bone marrow soup), a local delicacy I had to try. It was surprisingly rich and flavorful, a perfect start to a day of exploration. The atmosphere was cozy, with colorful decor and the gentle strumming of a guitar creating a relaxed vibe. Fuelled up, we set off to our first destination: Casa Na Bolom.

Casa Na Bolom, once the home of archaeologist Frans Blom and his wife Gertrude Duby Blom, is now a museum, hotel, and cultural center. As someone passionate about Latin American culture, I was particularly excited about this visit. Stepping through its doors felt like stepping back in time. The house itself is a beautiful example of colonial architecture, with a central courtyard filled with lush plants. We spent a good couple of hours wandering through the various rooms, each filled with artifacts, photographs, and stories of the Bloms' work with the Lacandon Maya people.

Gertrude Duby Blom, or Trudi as she was known, was a documentary photographer and journalist whose work captured the lives and struggles of the Lacandon Maya. Her photographs are incredibly powerful, offering a glimpse into a world that is both beautiful and fragile. It's inspiring to see how she and Frans dedicated their lives to protecting the Lacandon people and preserving the Chiapas rainforest. I found myself particularly moved by Trudi's dedication; it reminded me of the importance of using our skills, whatever they may be, to make a positive impact on the world. The museum also showcases Frans' Mayan artifacts, and it’s fascinating to see the tangible pieces of history he collected. The name Na Bolom itself means House of the Jaguar in Mayan, a nod to Frans's nickname and their dedication to preserving Mayan culture.

The best journey takes you home, in places you have never been.

After immersing ourselves in the history and culture of Casa Na Bolom, we decided to embrace the natural beauty of the region. Our next stop was the Reserva Ecológica y Jardín de Orquídeas Moxviquil.

As a software developer in Berlin, surrounded by concrete and technology, I sometimes crave a deep connection with nature. This reserve was exactly what I needed. The air was fresh and crisp, filled with the scent of pine and damp earth. As we entered the reserve, we were immediately greeted by a riot of colors. Orchids of every imaginable hue bloomed in profusion, clinging to trees and rocks, creating a breathtaking spectacle. Lena, with her graphic designer's eye, was in heaven, snapping photos from every angle. I, on the other hand, was content to simply wander and soak it all in.

The Reserva Ecológica Moxviquil is more than just a pretty place; it's a center for environmental education and conservation. They work to protect the native flora of Chiapas, particularly orchids, and educate the public about the importance of biodiversity. We walked along the interpretative trail, learning about the different species of orchids and the unique ecosystem of the cloud forest. The reserve felt like a sanctuary, a place where nature could thrive undisturbed. It was a welcome reminder of the importance of preserving these precious environments.

After our nature walk, it was time for lunch. We headed to El Caldero, a restaurant recommended by the hotel staff.

This place had a lively, modern atmosphere, and we were immediately drawn in by the aroma of wood-fired cooking. I ordered the *sopa de pan*, a traditional bread soup that was both comforting and delicious. Lena opted for grilled fish, which was fresh and perfectly cooked. The service was quick and friendly, and the prices were very reasonable.

With our bellies full, we decided to do a little shopping. San Cristobal is known for its handicrafts, and Lena was eager to find some unique souvenirs. We stopped by Artesanías Kuxul de Chiapas, a shop that features handmade clothing and textiles from local artisans.

Lena, always drawn to unique and ethically sourced items, was immediately captivated by the colorful blouses and embroidered bags. She ended up buying a beautiful hand-embroidered blouse for her mother, and I found a small, intricately carved wooden jaguar to add to my collection back in Berlin. Supporting local artisans is important to us, and it felt good to know that our purchases were directly benefiting the community.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at Cocoliche for dinner.

This restaurant and bar is known for its live music and theatrical performances, and we were in the mood for some entertainment. The atmosphere was buzzing with energy, and the music was infectious. We enjoyed some delicious tacos and local beer while watching a hilarious improv show. It was the perfect way to end a day of cultural and natural exploration.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Centro de Textiles del Mundo Maya and the Museo de Culturas Populares de Chiapas, continuing our exploration of the region's rich cultural heritage. And perhaps we'll wind down the evening at the Clover Irish Pub for a nightcap. San Cristobal continues to surprise and delight us at every turn.

Reflecting on the day, I feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of San Cristobal de las Casas. It's a reminder that there's so much to discover beyond our everyday lives, and that travel can be a powerful tool for connection and understanding. As we walked back to Hotel D' Monica, hand in hand, I couldn't help but smile.
