Experience the highs and lows of trekking the Huayhuash Circuit as we reach new altitudes and savor the stunning Peruvian landscapes.
Reaching New Heights
Today was a day of immense physical challenge and even greater reward. As I sit here in my tent, the chill of the Andean night seeping in, I can't help but feel an overwhelming sense of accomplishment. The Huayhuash Circuit continues to test our limits, but with each step, the beauty of this place seeps deeper into our souls.
The morning started, as usual, with a hearty breakfast at Cordillera Huayhuash.

The warmth of the sun was a welcome change as we packed up our gear, knowing today would be particularly demanding. The air was crisp, and the peaks surrounding us seemed to dare us to come closer. Lena, ever the early bird, was already snapping photos of the sunrise, capturing the golden light as it painted the mountains in hues of orange and pink. It's moments like these that remind me why I traded my comfortable Berlin apartment for this rugged adventure.
Huayhuash National Park was our main attraction today, and it did not disappoint.

Every turn presented a new vista, more breathtaking than the last. The scale of the landscape is simply humbling, and I found myself pausing frequently, just to take it all in. The vastness made me reflect on my life back in Berlin. Sometimes, amidst the coding and the city's hustle, I forget the simple beauty that exists in the world. This trek is a powerful reminder of what truly matters.
The mountains are calling and I must go.
Our group, friends though we may be, has developed a rhythm. Some are faster, some slower, but we always ensure no one is left behind. There's an unspoken camaraderie that develops when you're all pushing yourselves to the limit in such an environment. We shared stories, offered encouragement, and even a few much-needed snacks. It's these small moments of connection that make the journey even more special.
Later in the day, we stopped for lunch, again provided by the ever-reliable Cordillera Huayhuash catering. Simple but delicious, the food was exactly what we needed to replenish our energy. As we ate, we watched a pair of condors circling overhead, their massive wings casting shadows on the ground. It felt like a scene from a movie, and I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experience.
As the day wore on, the challenge intensified. We began our ascent towards Paso Trapecio, cordillera Huayhuash, a high pass known for its stunning views.

The air thinned, and each step became a conscious effort. My lungs burned, and my legs screamed in protest, but the thought of the view from the top kept me going. Lena, surprisingly, seemed to be handling the altitude better than I was. Perhaps all those yoga classes are paying off.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, we reached the summit. And what a reward it was! The panorama was simply incredible – snow-capped peaks stretching as far as the eye could see, turquoise lakes shimmering in the distance, and a sense of accomplishment that washed over me like a wave. We spent a good half-hour at the top, taking photos, catching our breath, and simply soaking in the beauty of the world around us. I even managed to call Lena and share the moment with her, although the connection was a bit patchy. Still, it was worth it to hear her excited voice.
The descent was tough on the knees, but the stunning scenery kept our spirits high. We eventually made it back to camp, exhausted but exhilarated. Dinner at Cordillera Huayhuash was a welcome sight, and we devoured the meal with gusto. As the sun set, casting long shadows across the valley, we gathered around a small fire, sharing stories and laughter.
Before retreating to my tent, I took a moment to look up at the stars. The sky here is unlike anything I've ever seen – a million diamonds scattered across a velvet cloth. It's a reminder of the vastness of the universe and our place within it. I felt a profound sense of peace, knowing that I was exactly where I was meant to be.
Tomorrow, we continue our trek, heading towards Cuyoc Pass. I'm already anticipating the challenges and the rewards that await us. The Huayhuash Circuit is not for the faint of heart, but for those willing to push their limits, it offers an experience that is truly unforgettable.
As I drifted off to sleep, I thought about my life back in Berlin. I wondered if I'd ever be able to look at it the same way again. This trip has changed me in ways I can't yet fully comprehend. But one thing is for sure – I'm grateful for every moment, every challenge, and every breathtaking view. The mountains have a way of stripping away the unnecessary and revealing what truly matters. And right now, what matters is the simple act of being here, in this moment, surrounded by the beauty of the Andes.
This trek has also made me think about what I forgot to bring. While I had all the essentials, I really wish I had remembered my satellite phone. It would have been great to have a reliable way to communicate with Lena and the family back home. And extra memory cards for my camera would have been a lifesaver. I've already made a note to double-check my packing list for future adventures.
The camaraderie amongst our group is also something I cherish. We've become a close-knit family, supporting each other through thick and thin. I'm especially grateful for Lena's unwavering optimism and her ability to find joy in even the most challenging situations. She's truly my rock, and I couldn't imagine doing this trek without her.
As I close my eyes, I can still see the towering peaks, feel the crisp mountain air, and hear the sound of the wind whistling through the valleys. The Huayhuash Circuit has cast its spell on me, and I know that this is an experience I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
And with that, I bid you goodnight from the heart of the Peruvian Andes. Tomorrow, new heights await!
Thinking about the journey ahead, I am excited about reaching Cuyoc Pass tomorrow. I hear it is the highest pass in the entire Huayhuash circuit, and I am looking forward to the challenge and the views. I am also hoping to find a small shop in Cordillera Huayhuash to pick up some souvenirs for the family back home. It would be nice to bring them a little piece of Peru to remind them of my adventure. But for now, sleep calls. Goodnight!
