Trekking the Huayhuash Circuit: A Peruvian Adventure with Friends
Day 6: Navigating Huaraz: Acclimatization and Adventure Prep
Experiencing Huaraz, connecting with local experts, and preparing for the next leg of the Huayhuash Circuit trek with friends.
Settling into Huaraz: A Day of Preparation
Today was all about settling into Huaraz, connecting with the local experts at HIGH SUMMIT PERU SAC, and ensuring we're fully prepped for the challenges ahead. It's amazing how quickly a new place can feel like home when you're surrounded by such incredible scenery and the promise of adventure.

After a hearty breakfast at our campsite, courtesy of Cordillera Huayhuash, we made our way into Huaraz. The plan was to meet with HIGH SUMMIT PERU SAC, a local travel company recommended by a fellow trekker I met in Berlin. They specialize in mountaineering and trekking, and I wanted to get some last-minute advice and ensure we had all our permits and necessary gear sorted out.
The journey to their office was quite straightforward. Huaraz is a bustling city, full of life and energy. We took a local bus, which was an experience in itself – the music, the packed aisles, and the stunning views out the window made it a memorable ride. I couldn't help but compare it to the efficient, quiet commutes in Berlin, a stark contrast that highlighted how different, yet equally charming, life can be in different corners of the world.
Arriving at HIGH SUMMIT PERU SAC, we were greeted warmly by Marco, the owner, a mountain guide born and raised in the Andes. His passion for the region was immediately evident, and it was reassuring to speak with someone so knowledgeable and experienced. We went over our itinerary, discussed weather conditions, and he provided some invaluable tips on navigating the passes ahead. He even shared a few stories of his own trekking adventures, which were both inspiring and slightly terrifying!
Lena, as always, was meticulous in checking our gear. She had a detailed list and made sure we had everything from extra batteries to blister plasters. It’s moments like these when I truly appreciate her organizational skills; left to my own devices, I’d probably forget half the essentials. I did forget the satellite phone and extra memory cards, something Lena reminded me of with a knowing smile.

With our meeting concluded, we decided to explore Huaraz a bit. The city is nestled in a valley, surrounded by towering peaks, creating a stunning backdrop to everyday life. We wandered through the Plaza de Armas, the central square, soaking in the local atmosphere. There were vendors selling everything from handmade crafts to local delicacies. Lena, with her keen eye for design, was particularly drawn to the colorful textiles and intricate pottery.
Lunch was at a small, family-run restaurant just off the main square. We tried *cuy* (guinea pig), a local specialty. I have to admit, I was a bit hesitant at first, but it was surprisingly delicious – crispy skin and tender meat, seasoned with local herbs. It’s these culinary adventures that really make traveling worthwhile, pushing me beyond my comfort zone and opening my palate to new flavors.
After lunch, we took some time to shop for additional supplies. We stocked up on snacks, water purification tablets, and a few extra layers of clothing, just in case the weather turned. The shop at Cordillera Huayhuash had a decent selection, and the prices were reasonable. I even found a small, hand-carved wooden flute, a traditional Andean instrument. I’m hoping to learn a few tunes during the trek, much to the amusement (or dismay) of my friends.

Back at our campsite, we spent the late afternoon repacking our bags and making final preparations for the days ahead. We reviewed our route, discussed potential challenges, and made sure everyone was comfortable with the plan. It’s important to have these conversations, especially when trekking at high altitude, where conditions can change rapidly.
Dinner, again at our campsite, was a simple but satisfying meal of soup and bread, provided by Cordillera Huayhuash. As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the mountains, we gathered around a small campfire, sharing stories and laughter. It’s these moments of camaraderie that I cherish most when traveling with friends – the shared experiences, the inside jokes, and the unwavering support.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're scheduled to continue our trek through the Cordillera Huayhuash. According to the itinerary, we will see HUAYHUASH TREK PERÚ. I’m excited to see what challenges and rewards await us, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to experience this incredible part of the world with such amazing company.
Before heading to bed, I took a moment to reflect on the day. Huaraz had offered a perfect blend of acclimatization and adventure preparation. Meeting with Marco at HIGH SUMMIT PERU SAC had been invaluable, providing us with local insights and reassurance. Exploring the city, sampling the local cuisine, and stocking up on supplies had been both enjoyable and practical. But most importantly, spending time with my friends, sharing stories and laughter, had reinforced the bonds that make these journeys so special.
As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of anticipation for the days ahead. The Huayhuash Circuit is known for its breathtaking landscapes, challenging trails, and remote wilderness. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, but I also knew that the rewards would be immeasurable. And with my friends by my side, I felt ready to take on whatever challenges lay ahead.
Goodnight from Huaraz. Tomorrow, the mountains await!
