Chromatic Wonders and Volcanic Majesty

Today was a day of vibrant colors and imposing landscapes, a true feast for the senses. Leaving the familiar comforts of the Diego de Almagro San Pedro de Atacama, I ventured out with my friends to explore two of Atacama's most stunning natural attractions. It was a day filled with the kind of awe-inspiring beauty that makes you feel incredibly small yet deeply connected to the earth.

Our first stop was the Valle del Arcoiris, or Rainbow Valley, and what a sight it was! After a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Tara, known for its generous portions and friendly service, we set off. The valley is about 90 kilometers from San Pedro, and the drive itself was an adventure, with the landscape transforming dramatically as we got closer. The anticipation was building as we approached this geological marvel. It was a bit of a drive, but definitely worth it.

When we finally arrived, I was struck by the sheer variety of colors in the rock formations. Reds, greens, whites, and browns swirled together in a breathtaking display, a result of the various minerals present in the soil. It felt like walking through a giant, open-air art gallery, each turn revealing a new and unique vista. The sunlight played across the landscape, intensifying the colors and creating an almost surreal atmosphere. It was hard to believe that such a place existed on Earth. The valley is located in the Rio Grande Basin and is close to the Yerbas Buenas Petroglyphs.

The earth has music for those who listen.

We spent a couple of hours wandering through the valley, taking photos and simply soaking in the beauty. My friends and I were constantly exclaiming over the different shades and patterns, marveling at the forces of nature that had created such a spectacle. I couldn't help but think of Mateo and Klara back in Potsdam, wishing they could experience this with me. I made a mental note to find a beautiful rock to bring back for Mateo, something to remind him of this magical place. I made sure to take plenty of photos, knowing that even the best camera couldn't fully capture the essence of the Rainbow Valley.

After the Rainbow Valley, we made our way towards Licancabur, the iconic volcano that dominates the Atacama skyline. We had lunch at Barros Restaurante, where we enjoyed some traditional Chilean food. The restaurant had a lovely atmosphere, and the food was delicious, providing us with the energy we needed for the afternoon's adventure. I had heard tales of the mystical wedding between Licancabur and Cerro Quimal, a legend that added a layer of intrigue to the already impressive mountain.

Licancabur, standing at almost 6,000 meters, is visible from miles away. As we approached, its perfect cone shape loomed larger and larger, a testament to the power and beauty of nature. The volcano holds a special place in the hearts of the Atacameño people, who revere it as Tata Maico Licán, their mountain of the people. The drive up to the base was stunning, with the desert stretching out in all directions. I could see the oasis of San Pedro, the Salar de Atacama, and even the Laguna Verde in Bolivia from a distance. It was an incredible panorama.

We didn't climb to the summit, as that requires a more extensive expedition, but we did hike around the base, taking in the views and feeling the thin air. The landscape was stark and desolate, yet incredibly beautiful in its own way. The silence was profound, broken only by the occasional gust of wind. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the raw power of nature and the insignificance of our own existence. I imagined the ancient priests who once climbed this volcano to light fires and communicate with other sanctuaries, feeling a connection to the past and the spiritual significance of this place.

After our explorations, we headed back towards San Pedro, stopping at Galeria Kunza. I found a few unique souvenirs there, including a beautiful piece of lapis lazuli jewelry for Klara. I always try to find something special for her when I travel, a small token of my adventures to bring back home. I also picked up a few postcards for Mateo, knowing he would love to see the pictures of the Rainbow Valley and the volcano. The gallery had a fascinating collection of local art and crafts, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the Atacama region.

As the sun began to set, we decided to unwind at Rincón de Sal, a local bar known for its cozy atmosphere and rustic decor. We enjoyed some Pisco Sours, reminiscing about the day's adventures and laughing over our shared experiences. The bar was decorated with adobe walls and salt details, reflecting the essence of the region. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration, surrounded by good friends and the unique ambiance of San Pedro. It reminded me of the cozy pubs back in Potsdam, a familiar comfort in a faraway land.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, I'm excited about the prospect of visiting the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) Radio Telescope and the Tour Astronomico at the Observatorio Hemisferio Sur. I’m hoping to get a glimpse into the mysteries of the universe. I’m sure it will be another unforgettable day in this extraordinary corner of the world. We plan to have breakfast at La Parada del Desierto, lunch at Pizzería El Charrúa, and dinner at Restaurante Patta Hoiri.

As I sit here writing this, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences of today. The Atacama Desert has a way of getting under your skin, of captivating your senses and stirring your soul. It's a place of stark contrasts and unexpected beauty, a place that challenges your perceptions and leaves you in awe of the natural world. I am so glad to be sharing this adventure with my friends, and I look forward to many more days of exploration and discovery in this remarkable landscape.
