Saying Goodbye to Cusco

As our incredible journey through the Cusco Region draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on all the amazing experiences we’ve shared as a family. Today was a day of discovery, reflection, and heartfelt goodbyes, filled with unique encounters that will forever be etched in our memories. It’s amazing how a place can capture your heart, and Cusco certainly did that for Isabella, Sofia, and me.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Mamá Jama Restaurant. The cozy atmosphere and delicious Peruvian coffee were the perfect start to our final day in Cusco. Sofia especially loved the fresh pastries, and Isabella and I enjoyed the traditional Andean music playing softly in the background. It was a moment of simple joy, appreciating the little things that make a place feel like home, even if just for a few days. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of the dishes we had here back in Toronto – Isabella would surely appreciate that.

After breakfast, we set out to visit the Cochahuasi Animal Sanctuary. This wasn't just another tourist stop; it was an experience that touched all of our hearts. The sanctuary is dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating animals that have been mistreated or are victims of poaching. Seeing the care and dedication of the staff was truly inspiring. We met pumas rescued from nightclubs, majestic Andean condors, playful monkeys, and even the iconic Peruvian hairless dogs. Sofia was particularly fascinated by the condors, their massive wingspans leaving her in awe. It was a powerful lesson for her about the importance of conservation and respect for all living creatures.

Visiting the Cochahuasi Animal Sanctuary was a poignant reminder of the importance of protecting our planet's incredible biodiversity.

One of the most touching stories was that of the two pumas who had been rescued from a nightclub in Lima. They had been kept in terrible conditions, their fangs removed and claws filed down. The sanctuary had nursed them back to health, and seeing them now, healthy and strong, was a testament to the power of compassion and rehabilitation. It was a stark reminder of the cruelty that exists in the world, but also of the hope and healing that is possible through dedicated care. I was also impressed by the Andean Condors, learning that they are a national symbol of Peru but sadly on the brink of extinction.

Next on our itinerary was a visit to the HUACA DE PACHACUTEQ, an ancient temple complex dedicated to Pachacutec, the Inca emperor who transformed Cusco into a thriving capital. As we walked through the site, I couldn't help but marvel at the incredible engineering skills of the Incas. The massive stone structures, built without the use of mortar, have stood for centuries, a testament to their ingenuity and craftsmanship. The site exuded a sense of history and mystery, transporting us back to a time when the Inca Empire reigned supreme. I tried to imagine what life must have been like here centuries ago, the rituals, the ceremonies, the daily lives of the people who called this place home. Sofia peppered me with questions, her curiosity piqued by the stories of emperors and conquests. It was a fantastic opportunity to bring history to life for her, far more engaging than any textbook could ever be.

For lunch, we stopped at Fusion Andina, a restaurant recommended for its unique blend of Peruvian and international flavors. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, and the menu offered a wide array of dishes to choose from. Isabella opted for a traditional Peruvian dish, while Sofia, ever the adventurous eater, tried the alpaca steak. I decided on a fusion dish that combined local ingredients with international cooking techniques. The meal was delicious, a perfect reflection of Cusco's blend of ancient traditions and modern influences. We sat by the balcony, which offered impressive views while enjoying our meal.

In the afternoon, we decided to do some last-minute souvenir shopping at ARTESANIAS LLANCAQMAKI. I wanted to find something special to remind us of our time in Cusco, something that captured the essence of this magical place. The shop was a treasure trove of handmade crafts, from colorful textiles to intricate pottery. We spent hours browsing the stalls, admiring the skill and artistry of the local artisans. Sofia picked out a small alpaca doll, a fluffy reminder of the adorable animals we had encountered at the animal sanctuary. Isabella found a beautiful hand-woven shawl, the vibrant colors reflecting the energy and vibrancy of Cusco. I finally settled on a piece of intricately carved stone, a reminder of the HUACA DE PACHACUTEQ and the enduring legacy of the Inca civilization.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at Republica Del Pisco for our farewell dinner. This restaurant, known for its lively atmosphere and delicious pisco cocktails, was the perfect place to celebrate our final night in Cusco. The restaurant was buzzing with energy, filled with locals and tourists alike, all eager to experience the vibrant nightlife of Cusco. We ordered a round of pisco sours, a local specialty, and toasted to our incredible adventure. The food was delicious, a mix of traditional Peruvian dishes and modern culinary creations. As we savored our meal, we listened to the live music, the sounds of Andean instruments filling the air. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day, a celebration of all that we had experienced and learned during our time in Cusco.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this incredible journey. Cusco has captured our hearts in a way that few places have. The rich history, the vibrant culture, the breathtaking landscapes, and the warm hospitality of the people have all combined to create an unforgettable experience. I know that we will carry these memories with us for a lifetime, and I hope that one day we will have the opportunity to return to this magical place.

Tomorrow, we begin our journey back home to Toronto. While I am eager to return to the comforts of our own home, I know that a piece of my heart will forever remain in Cusco. This trip has not only been an adventure but also a reminder of the importance of family, connection, and the power of travel to broaden our horizons and deepen our understanding of the world.
