Day 1: First Day Back in Cusco: A Homecoming of Flavors and Faith
Reconnecting with my roots in Cusco: Exploring Plaza Mayor, Cusco Cathedral, Qorikancha, and savoring Peruvian cuisine with family.
A Warm Embrace Back in Cusco
After years of living in Montreal, returning to Cusco with Sophie and Mateo felt like stepping back into a cherished dream. The air was crisp, the sun warm, and the city buzzed with a familiar energy. Today was all about re-acquainting ourselves with the heart of Cusco, a place that holds so many memories and a deep connection to my heritage. It was a day filled with vibrant sights, sounds, and flavors, a true homecoming for my soul.
Our journey from Montreal was long, with a stopover in Lima, but the anticipation kept us going. I wanted Mateo to experience the magic of Cusco, to walk the same streets I did as a child, and to understand the rich history that shaped me. Sophie, ever the historian, was eager to explore the ancient sites and immerse herself in the local culture.
Our first stop, after settling into the Jose Antonio Cusco Hotel, was the iconic Plaza Mayor de Cusco.

It was even more magnificent than I remembered, a sprawling square framed by stunning colonial architecture and the towering presence of the Cusco Cathedral.

The energy of the plaza was infectious, a mix of locals and tourists all drawn to this central point of the city. We took our time, soaking in the atmosphere, watching as Mateo chased pigeons and Sophie snapped photos of the intricate details of the surrounding buildings.
From the Plaza Mayor, we ventured into the Cusco Cathedral, a breathtaking basilica that dominates the skyline.

Explore the stunning Cusco Cathedral, a breathtaking blend of history and faith in the heart of Peru's cultural capital.
Built on the site of an ancient Inca palace, the cathedral is a testament to both Spanish colonial influence and the enduring spirit of the Inca people. The sheer scale of the cathedral was awe-inspiring, its towering pillars and ornate decorations a testament to centuries of history. Sophie was particularly fascinated by the blend of architectural styles, noting the Renaissance facade and the Gothic-Baroque interior. Mateo, wide-eyed, was captivated by the massive silver altar and the countless paintings depicting biblical scenes. As we walked through the cathedral, I couldn't help but feel a sense of reverence, a connection to the generations of Cusqueños who had walked these same halls before me.
To truly know a place, you must walk its streets, taste its food, and feel its history.
Leaving the cathedral, we made our way to Qorikancha, the Temple of the Sun, a sacred site that was once the most important religious center in the Inca Empire.
Discover the sacred beauty of Qorikancha, an iconic Inca temple that merges history and spirituality in the heart of Cusco, Peru.
The contrast between the ornate colonial church built atop the ruins and the remaining Inca stonework was striking, a powerful reminder of the clash of cultures that shaped Cusco's history. I explained to Mateo how Qorikancha, meaning Golden Enclosure in Quechua, was once covered in sheets of gold and filled with golden statues. He listened intently, his imagination running wild with images of the temple's former glory. Even in its partially destroyed state, Qorikancha exuded a sense of power and mystery, a testament to the ingenuity and spiritual beliefs of the Inca people. The precision of the stonework was remarkable, the massive stones fitting together seamlessly without the use of mortar. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the incredible achievements of a civilization that had thrived in this very spot centuries ago.
By this time, our stomachs were starting to rumble, so we decided to head to El Jardin - Healthy Food And Coffee for breakfast.

Located right on the Plaza de Armas, the restaurant offered stunning views of the city center. The menu was filled with healthy and delicious options, perfect for starting our day. I opted for a traditional Peruvian breakfast of quinua porridge, while Sophie enjoyed a fruit smoothie and Mateo devoured a stack of pancakes. The food was fresh and flavorful, a delightful introduction to the culinary delights of Cusco.
For lunch, we decided to try Chicha por Gaston Acurio, a restaurant known for its modern take on traditional Peruvian cuisine.

The restaurant was bustling with activity, a testament to its popularity. We started with a round of Pisco Sours, the classic Peruvian cocktail, before diving into the menu. I ordered the rocoto relleno, a stuffed pepper dish that is a specialty of the region, while Sophie opted for the grilled octopus and Mateo chose a kid-friendly alpaca steak. The food was exquisite, each dish a work of art that showcased the vibrant flavors of Peru. It was a culinary experience that we won't soon forget.
In the afternoon, we explored the Handicraft Center Cusco, a sprawling market filled with stalls selling everything from textiles and jewelry to ceramics and wood carvings.

It was a sensory overload, a riot of colors, sounds, and smells. Mateo was fascinated by the intricate designs of the textiles, while Sophie haggled with the vendors for souvenirs. I picked up a beautiful quena, an Andean flute, hoping to rekindle my childhood hobby. The market was a treasure trove of unique and handmade items, a perfect place to find a piece of Cusco to take home with us.
As evening approached, we made our way to Morena Peruvian Kitchen for dinner.

The restaurant was known for its authentic Peruvian dishes and its cozy atmosphere. We started with ceviche, a refreshing seafood dish marinated in citrus juices, before moving on to our main courses. I ordered the lomo saltado, a stir-fried beef dish that is a staple of Peruvian cuisine, while Sophie chose the Arroz con Mariscos and Mateo enjoyed a simple but tasty chicken dish. The food was delicious, the service impeccable, and the ambiance perfect for a relaxing family dinner.
After dinner, we strolled back to our hotel, the Plaza Mayor bathed in the soft glow of streetlights. The city was alive with activity, music spilling out from the bars and restaurants, the sounds of laughter and conversation filling the air. It was a magical scene, a perfect ending to our first day back in Cusco.
Reflecting on the day, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to share my heritage with my family. It was a day filled with reconnection, exploration, and culinary delights, a perfect start to our Peruvian adventure. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Saqsaywaman, San Blas View Point, and Calle Loreto. I am excited to share these amazing places with Sophie and Mateo!
Today reminded me why I love this city so much. It's more than just a place; it's a feeling, a connection to my past, and a hope for the future. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
