Family Journey to the Heart of Incan Civilization in Cusco
Day 15: A Fond Farewell to Cusco: Reflecting on a Family Adventure Through Incan History
Reflecting on our family's immersive journey through Cusco's historical center and cultural landmarks, a heartfelt farewell to Peru.
Adios, Cusco!
As our Peruvian adventure draws to a close, I find myself filled with a mix of emotions. There's a sense of accomplishment in having shared this journey with Sophie and Mateo, reconnecting with my roots and immersing them in the rich tapestry of Incan history and culture. But there's also a tinge of sadness, knowing that our time here is ending. Today, we soaked in the last moments of Cusco, revisiting some cherished spots and discovering new ones.
Our final day began, as many others did, with a hearty breakfast at Fuego, Burgers and Barbecue Restaurant. It's become a family favorite, and Mateo especially loves their burgers. Sophie always goes for the sandwiches. I opted for something more traditional, a Peruvian-style omelet. We reminisced about our favorite meals from the trip, from the savory *lomo saltado* to the comforting *aji de gallina*. It's amazing how food can anchor memories, bringing us back to specific moments and feelings.

With our bellies full, we ventured into the heart of Cusco's Historical Center. It felt different today, knowing it was our last chance to wander its ancient streets. We strolled through Plaza de Armas, marveling at the Cusco Cathedral. The square was bustling with activity, locals and tourists alike soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. We watched as street vendors set up their stalls, displaying colorful textiles and handicrafts. Mateo was particularly fascinated by a group of musicians playing traditional Andean music, their melodies filling the air with a sense of celebration.

We ducked into a few shops, searching for last-minute souvenirs. Sophie found a beautiful hand-woven shawl, while Mateo picked out a small *quena* flute, eager to try his hand at playing Andean music. I found a book on Incan history, hoping to delve deeper into the stories and legends we've encountered on our journey. I remember my grandfather telling me stories of Pachacutec when I was a boy growing up in Huancavelica. It's surreal to think that I am walking the same streets that Pachacutec once walked.
The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, but the memories created along the way last a lifetime.
For lunch, we decided to try A Mi Manera, a restaurant known for its Peruvian cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a warm, rustic ambiance. We ordered a variety of dishes to share, including *ravioles*, *lomo saltado* and *ceviche*. The food was delicious, each dish bursting with flavor and showcasing the unique culinary traditions of Peru. Mateo, surprisingly, loved the *ceviche*, a testament to his growing appreciation for Peruvian cuisine. Sophie enjoyed the ravioles, and I savored the *lomo saltado*, a dish that always reminds me of home.

After lunch, we made our way to the Monumento Inca Pachacutec, a towering tribute to one of the greatest Incan rulers. The monument is located a bit south of the city center, near the Ovalo Pachacutec. As we approached the monument, Mateo's eyes widened in awe. The sheer scale of the structure was impressive, a testament to the power and ingenuity of the Incan civilization. I remember my grandfather telling me stories of Pachacutec when I was a boy growing up in Huancavelica. It's surreal to think that I am walking the same streets that Pachacutec once walked.

We explored the museum inside the monument, learning about Pachacutec's life and his contributions to the Incan Empire. The exhibits were informative and engaging, showcasing the Inca's innovative agricultural techniques, their sophisticated system of governance, and their remarkable architectural achievements. Mateo was particularly fascinated by the scale models of Machu Picchu, marveling at the ingenuity of the Inca in building such a magnificent city in the mountains. I was impressed by the panels detailing Pachacutec's impact on the Inca civilization, his vision and leadership shaping the destiny of his people.
From the top of the monument, we enjoyed a panoramic view of Cusco and its surroundings. The city stretched out before us, a tapestry of red-tiled roofs and cobblestone streets, nestled in the embrace of the Andes Mountains. We could see the Plaza de Armas, the Cusco Cathedral, and the Qorikancha, landmarks that had become familiar sights during our stay. The view was breathtaking, a reminder of the beauty and grandeur of this ancient city.
As the afternoon wore on, we decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy at Real Plaza Cusco. It was a change of pace from the historical sites, but Mateo was eager to visit the toy store. Sophie and I were happy to browse the shops, looking for souvenirs and gifts for friends and family back home. We picked up some alpaca wool sweaters, some hand-painted ceramics, and a few bottles of *pisco*, the national drink of Peru. Mateo, of course, got a new toy, a small replica of an Incan warrior.

As we climbed the stairs to the restaurant, we were rewarded with a breathtaking vista of Cusco bathed in the golden light of the setting sun. The view was magical, a fitting backdrop for our farewell dinner.
