Face to Face with Cradle Mountain's Wild Side

Today was all about embracing the raw, untamed beauty of Cradle Mountain. We ventured onto the Face Track, a challenging hike that promised stunning views and a taste of Tasmania's rugged wilderness. It was a day filled with breathtaking landscapes, delicious food, and a touch of retail therapy, making it a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Hungry Wombat Cafe. As an archivist, I appreciate a good historical reference, and the name alone sparked my interest. The cafe was bustling with fellow adventurers, all eager to fuel up before tackling the trails. I opted for their hearty breakfast, a decision I didn't regret. The kids enjoyed pancakes and bacon rolls, while Aisha chose a lighter option of French toast. It was the perfect start to a day that demanded energy and enthusiasm. I made sure to grab a travel guidebook, as I had forgotten mine, and Imani was upset at my mistake.

With our stomachs full and spirits high, we set off towards Cradle Mountain Road. The drive itself was a treat, with panoramic views unfolding around every bend. The crisp air and the promise of adventure filled the car as we made our way to the trailhead. It's moments like these, surrounded by family and nature's grandeur, that make all the logistical challenges of travel worthwhile.

The Face Track proved to be as challenging as anticipated. The trail was rough in spots, and definitely muddy, but the incredible views kept us motivated. Farah, ever the enthusiastic hiker, led the charge, while Imani, despite his initial reluctance, soon found his stride. Aisha and I brought up the rear, taking our time to soak in the scenery and capture photos. The landscape was a tapestry of towering peaks, lush forests, and sparkling lakes, a scene that felt both ancient and timeless.

The true value of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing them together, forging memories that will last a lifetime.

As we hiked, I couldn't help but reflect on the parallels between my work as an archivist and our journey through Cradle Mountain. Both involve uncovering hidden stories, piecing together fragments of the past to create a richer understanding of the present. The mountains themselves seemed to hold countless stories, etched into their rocky faces and whispered by the wind.

Reaching certain vantage points along the Face Track was a real accomplishment. The panoramic views were simply stunning, stretching as far as the eye could see. We took a moment to catch our breath and soak it all in, feeling a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to witness such natural beauty. I must admit, I was a little nervous navigating some of the steeper sections, especially with the kids in tow. But their resilience and determination inspired me to keep going, reminding me of the strength and adaptability that lies within our family. I was glad I had bought hiking boots before the trip, it would have been even more difficult without them!

After our invigorating hike, we were ready for a well-deserved lunch. We drove to Tullah Lakeside Bar & Grill, drawn in by the promise of hearty Tasmanian fare. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a menu that showcased the region's fresh produce. We settled in for a relaxed meal, reminiscing about our adventures on the Face Track. I decided to try the Tasmanian rib eye fillet, which was amazing. Aisha chose the fish and chips, while the kids devoured burgers and sandwiches. It was the perfect way to refuel and recharge before the next leg of our journey.

With our appetites satisfied, we decided to explore the charming town of Tullah. We stumbled upon SEPPENFELTS Emporium, Gifts & Books, a delightful shop filled with local crafts, souvenirs, and literary treasures. As a lover of history and culture, I was immediately drawn to the books, browsing through titles that explored Tasmania's rich heritage. The kids were equally captivated by the quirky gifts and souvenirs, each eager to find the perfect memento of our trip. We ended up buying a few small items, including a handcrafted wooden wombat for Imani and a beautiful leather-bound journal for Farah.

As evening approached, we made our way back to Cradle Mountain, eager for a relaxing dinner at the Highland Restaurant. This restaurant is located within Cradle Mountain Lodge and is known for its exquisite dining experience, set against the backdrop of Tasmania's wilderness. The restaurant's menu embraces the seasons, showcasing the island's finest local ingredients and expertly paired with award-winning wines. The atmosphere was elegant yet welcoming, with soft lighting and panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. I opted for the three-course menu, eager to sample the chef's creations. The oysters were incredibly fresh, and the beef fillet was cooked to perfection. Aisha chose the pepperberry and gin cured ocean trout, while the kids enjoyed simpler fare from the children's menu. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with adventure and discovery.
