Chasing Waterfalls and Flavors in Oaxaca
Today was a day of incredible contrasts, from the breathtaking petrified waterfalls of Hierve el Agua to the vibrant, bustling markets of Oaxaca. It was a day filled with natural beauty, cultural immersion, and, of course, delicious food. I'm excited to share all the details of our adventure, as Oaxaca continues to surprise and enchant us at every turn.

The day began early, with a hearty breakfast at Tlayudona. Knowing we had a long day of exploring ahead, I opted for the huevos a la mexicana, while Priya chose the huevos con chorizo. Aarav, predictably, went for the simple yet satisfying handmade tortillas. Tlayudona, as I understand it, refers to a strong, resilient woman, much like the giant tortilla they're known for. It's a fitting name, as the restaurant supports local women and celebrates Oaxacan culture.

Fueled up, we embarked on our journey to Hierve el Agua. The drive itself was an adventure, winding through the Oaxacan countryside. The landscape was dotted with agave plants, a reminder of the region's rich mezcal heritage. I couldn't help but think of my Sega Soccer games back home in Toronto as we passed through the small towns, each with its own unique charm. I made a mental note to try and recreate some Mauritian dishes when I got back, inspired by the fresh ingredients and vibrant flavors of Oaxaca.
Reaching Hierve el Agua was like stepping onto another planet. The petrified waterfalls, formed by mineral deposits over thousands of years, were a sight to behold. The name, which translates to boiling water, is a bit misleading, as the water in the pools was refreshingly cool. I learned that these springs once supplied water to an intricate series of canals and terraces, showcasing the ingenuity of ancient Mesoamerican civilizations. The kids were fascinated by the natural infinity pools perched at the edge of the cliff, offering stunning views of the Sierra Madre mountains. I managed to snap some photos, hoping to capture the surreal beauty of the landscape.
It's not about the destination, but the journey and the memories created along the way.
After spending a few hours exploring Hierve el Agua, we made our way back to Oaxaca City. Our next stop was the Mercado Benito Juárez, a sensory overload in the best possible way. The market was a maze of narrow aisles, overflowing with fresh produce, local cheeses, meats, and artisanal goods. The air was thick with the aroma of spices, roasted meats, and freshly baked bread. I was on a mission to find some Oaxacan chocolate to bring back home, while Priya was drawn to the colorful textiles and handicrafts. Aarav, of course, was more interested in the candy stalls.

We stopped at several stalls, sampling local delicacies and haggling for souvenirs. I picked up a small Spanish phrasebook, realizing my high school Spanish was not quite up to the task. I also found a vendor selling traditional herbal medicine, a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of Oaxaca. Priya bought a beautiful hand-woven scarf, while Aarav settled on a bag of tamarind candies. The market was a microcosm of Oaxacan life, a vibrant tapestry of sights, sounds, and smells.
For lunch, we ventured to Calabacitas Tiernas, a vegetarian restaurant recommended for its delicious and healthy options. I was pleasantly surprised by the innovative menu, which featured dishes like vegan ceviche and potato salads. Priya opted for the bean soup, while Aarav, surprisingly, enjoyed the curry dessert. The restaurant also had a great selection of local and craft beers, which I couldn't resist trying. It was a refreshing change of pace after the hustle and bustle of the market.

In the afternoon, we paid a visit to Alma D Oaxaca Artesianas, a shop recommended to me by a local friend. I'm always on the lookout for unique souvenirs, and this place did not disappoint. The shop was filled with beautiful handcrafted items, from alebrijes to pottery to textiles. I learned that alebrijes are brightly colored, fantastical creatures made from wood, each one unique and full of personality. I ended up buying a small alebrije for my desk back in Toronto, a reminder of our Oaxacan adventure.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Catedral Restaurant for dinner. Located near the Santo Domingo church, the restaurant exuded a sense of history and elegance. We decided to try some traditional Oaxacan dishes, including mole negro and mole amarillo. The flavors were complex and rich, a testament to the region's culinary heritage. The restaurant had a lovely atmosphere, with warm and attentive service. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

Tomorrow, we're planning to visit the Centro Cultural San Pablo and the Jardín Etnobotánico de Oaxaca. I'm particularly excited about the botanical garden, as I've heard it's a beautiful and informative place to learn about the region's diverse plant life. Priya is looking forward to the cultural center, which houses a library and hosts various cultural events. And perhaps, if we are lucky, we may end the day at La Mezcalerita.
As I reflect on today's experiences, I'm struck by the incredible diversity of Oaxaca. From the natural wonders of Hierve el Agua to the cultural richness of the markets and the culinary delights of the restaurants, Oaxaca has something to offer everyone. It's a place that engages all the senses, a place that stays with you long after you've left. I'm grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime. And while I may miss playing Sega Soccer, I know that the memories we're making here in Oaxaca are far more valuable.
I'm also reminded of how far I've come since immigrating to Canada. From a young man seeking new opportunities to an immigration consultant helping others build new lives, my journey has been filled with challenges and rewards. And now, to share this adventure with my family, it's the best reward of all.
