Day 11: A Stroll Through History: Discovering the Heart of San Cristobal
Explore the historical charm of San Cristobal de las Casas, from the iconic Arco del Carmen to the vibrant Centro. A day of culture and flavors.
Echoes of the Past in San Cristobal
Today was a day of wandering through the heart of San Cristobal de las Casas, a city that whispers stories from centuries past. It's amazing how much history is packed into these cobblestone streets and colorful buildings. I’m so excited to share the highlights with you all, from the charming Centro to the iconic Arco del Carmen.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Cardamomo Cocina Hindu. It might seem strange to start a Mexican adventure with Indian food, but after several days of indulging in local cuisine, we were ready for something different. The restaurant was cozy, with a pleasant, exotic atmosphere. I ordered butter chicken, and Hans chose tandoori pork. Sofia, ever adventurous, opted for the palak paneer. Every dish was bursting with flavor, and the masala chai was the perfect morning pick-me-up. It was a surprisingly wonderful start to our day in Chiapas, and I made a mental note to try making masala chai at home, perhaps with a German twist, once we return to Heidelberg.

With our appetites sated, we set out to explore the Centro de San Cristóbal de las Casas. The city was bustling with activity, a vibrant mix of locals and tourists all drawn to the historic charm. The air was filled with the sounds of Spanish and various indigenous languages, a testament to the rich cultural tapestry of this region. The weather in August is quite pleasant, with temperatures hovering around 21°C during the day, though the forecast did predict some rain later. I was glad I had packed a light jacket.
As we strolled through the Centro, I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to my Mexican heritage. Born in Zacatecas, I've always been drawn to the vibrant culture and history of this land. San Cristobal, with its colonial architecture and indigenous influences, felt like a living museum. Sofia was particularly fascinated by the colorful textiles and handicrafts on display, a stark contrast to the more subdued styles we often see in Germany.
Our next stop was the Arco del Carmen, an iconic archway that once served as the city's gateway. Built in the late 17th century, its Moorish style is unique in Mexico, a testament to the diverse influences that have shaped this region. I learned that the Arco del Carmen was built in 1680 as part of the Convent of the Incarnation, also known as the Templo del Carmen. The nuns needed funds to build a bell tower, and the only available space was above Paso Real, a crucial street connecting the convent to the town square.

Sometimes, the most beautiful discoveries are found in the unexpected corners of history.
We spent a good hour simply admiring the arch, taking photos, and soaking in the atmosphere. It's amazing to think of all the people who have passed through this gateway over the centuries, each with their own stories and dreams. The Arco del Carmen is more than just a monument; it’s a living piece of history, connecting the past with the present. The nearby Iglesia del Carmen, with its baroque architecture, added to the charm of the area.
For lunch, we decided to try Restaurante TULUC, known for its authentic Mexican cuisine. The restaurant was bustling, but we managed to snag a table on the outdoor terrace. I ordered the traditional Chile, while Hans went for the monkfish. Sofia, always a fan of comfort food, chose a burger. The food was delicious, and the ambiance was perfect, a lively mix of locals and tourists enjoying the flavors of Chiapas. The staff was friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home.

After lunch, we took some time to wander through the Centro again, exploring some of the side streets and hidden plazas. I found a small shop selling traditional silver jewelry, a nod to my Mexican heritage, and picked up a delicate bracelet as a memento of our trip. Sofia, meanwhile, was captivated by a street performer playing traditional Mexican music.
As the afternoon wore on, we decided to take a break at Puro Mexicano Mezcalería. I wanted to introduce Hans to the world of mezcal, and this place seemed like the perfect spot. The mezcalería had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, with beautiful decorations and a wide selection of mezcals. The owner, Luis, was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about mezcal, guiding us through a tasting flight that showcased the diverse flavors of this traditional Mexican spirit. Hans, initially skeptical, was soon won over by the smoky, complex flavors of the mezcal. Sofia enjoyed a refreshing michelada, a non-alcoholic version, of course.

For dinner, we had reservations at Restaurante Las Pichanchas, a place known for its traditional Chiapaneco cuisine and lively entertainment. From what I had read, it has a vibrant atmosphere, complete with traditional dancers and live music, making for a truly memorable evening. When we arrived, the restaurant was already buzzing with activity. The decor was colorful and festive, and the air was filled with the sounds of marimba music. We were seated at a table near the dance floor, giving us a great view of the evening's entertainment.

We ordered the four-course special, which offered a nice introduction to the food from various parts of Chiapas. The dishes included garnachitas, tasajo con chirmol, and empanadas de chipilín. Each dish was flavorful and unique, showcasing the rich culinary heritage of this region. Sofia was particularly fascinated by the traditional folk dances, which took place throughout the evening. The dancers, dressed in colorful costumes, performed traditional dances from various regions of Chiapas, each with its own unique rhythm and style.
As the evening drew to a close, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences we had shared today. San Cristobal de las Casas had captured our hearts with its history, culture, and vibrant spirit. As we walked back to our hotel, Casa del Alma Hotel Boutique & Spa, the city was quiet and peaceful, the sounds of the day fading into the night. I looked forward to tomorrow, when we plan to visit Casa Mazariegos Recinto Histórico and La Enseñanza, Casa de la Ciudad.
