Whispers of the Wilderness

Today was a day of profound connection with nature. The Tasmanian Wilderness has a way of seeping into your soul, leaving you changed. As an archivist, I'm used to preserving the past, but today was about experiencing the present, a vibrant, living history unfolding before my eyes. The Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park and Nelson Falls were our destinations, promising an immersive experience, and they delivered in spades.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Palate. While the restaurant at Saffire Freycinet is quite a drive from where we were staying, it was well worth it. The views overlooking Great Oyster Bay were stunning, and the locally sourced ingredients were incredibly fresh. I savored every bite, appreciating the blend of flavors and the artistry of the chef. It was the perfect start to a day dedicated to exploring Tasmania's natural beauty. Hans enjoyed a multi-course degustation menu matched with local wines. Anna opted for the à la carte menu.

After breakfast, we set off for the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park. The drive itself was breathtaking, with winding roads offering panoramic views of the Tasmanian landscape. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of eucalyptus and damp earth. As we drove deeper into the park, the scenery transformed into a dense, mist-draped rainforest. I could feel the weight of history in the ancient trees and the stillness of the air. October in Tasmania is proving to be a season of contrasts – the vibrant blooms alongside the rugged landscapes. The weather was mild, with temperatures around 14°C, perfect for hiking.

Our first stop was Nelson Falls. The 700m walk to the falls is wheelchair accessible and children friendly, making it an ideal choice for families. The path meandered through a lush, green rainforest, with towering trees and an array of ferns creating a magical atmosphere. Informational displays provided insights into the region's geology and plant life, enriching our understanding of this ancient landscape. It was fascinating to learn about the connections between Tasmanian flora and that of New Zealand and South America, remnants of the supercontinent Gondwana.

As we approached the falls, the sound of cascading water grew louder, building anticipation. Nelson Falls is a broad cascade that leaps over a staircase of rock formations. The water spills over the mossy rocks and into the burbling creek below. The viewing platform is built right over flowing water at the base of the falls. The sight was simply awe-inspiring, a powerful reminder of nature's beauty and force. I took several photographs, trying to capture the essence of this magical place, but no image could truly do it justice. Hans was particularly impressed by the wheelchair accessibility of the trail, allowing everyone to experience the beauty of the falls. Anna enjoyed reading the information panels and learning about the ancient rainforest.

In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.

After Nelson Falls, we continued our journey through the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park. We stopped at a picnic area along the Lyell Highway for lunch. Bruni's Restaurant was our choice for lunch. The restaurant is located on the Huon Valley tourist route on the edge of North West Bay. The sunroom provides the opportunity for a more intimate dining experience. We enjoyed the seafood, which was incredibly fresh and flavorful. The peaceful atmosphere and fancy decor added to the experience.

We took the Franklin Nature Trail, a short, partly boardwalked trail that offers a quick and easy look at the Franklin River. The river itself is a sight to behold, its dark waters reflecting the surrounding forest. It's hard to imagine that this pristine wilderness was once threatened by a proposed dam. The successful campaign to save the Franklin River is a testament to the power of community action and the importance of preserving our natural heritage. As someone who works to preserve historical documents, I feel a particular connection to this kind of preservation, the kind that protects our natural history.

In the late afternoon, we made our way back to Hobart, but not before stopping for dinner at Fico. This restaurant is known for its modern, fun approach to food, with a focus on fresh, local produce. The menu is a mystery until you're seated, as it evolves depending on the day's best ingredients. We opted for the nine-course tasting extravaganza, a culinary journey that showcased the best of Tasmanian cuisine. The flavors were bold and innovative, and the presentation was exquisite. It was a truly memorable dining experience. Hans particularly enjoyed the wine list, which featured a wide selection of Tasmanian wines. Anna appreciated the restaurant's commitment to sustainability and local sourcing.

To cap off the evening, we decided to experience Hobart's nightlife at Society Salamanca. This underground cocktail bar specializes in Tasmanian gin and whisky, and the backbar boasts a collection of over 500 rare and wonderful spirits. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the bartenders were knowledgeable and passionate about their craft. We sipped on signature cocktails made with local spirits and fresh produce, savoring the unique flavors of Tasmania. Hans enjoyed a gin tasting platter, while Anna opted for a whisky tasting flight. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the Tasmanian Wilderness with my family. It's a place of breathtaking beauty and profound history, a place that reminds us of the importance of preserving our natural heritage. Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Gunns Plains Caves and Wings Wildlife Park. I'm looking forward to another day of adventure and discovery in this remarkable corner of the world.

The weather in October can be unpredictable, so it's essential to pack layers and be prepared for rain. Comfortable hiking boots are a must, as are waterproof clothing and a camera to capture the stunning scenery. Don't forget insect repellent and sunscreen, as the sun can be strong even on cloudy days. And most importantly, bring a sense of adventure and a willingness to embrace the unexpected.

Tasmania has a way of captivating your senses and leaving you with a deep appreciation for the natural world. It's a place where you can disconnect from the stresses of modern life and reconnect with the beauty and simplicity of nature. And as we continue our journey, I'm excited to see what other wonders this island has in store for us.
