Saying Goodbye to Skaftafell: A Journey's End

As our week-long adventure in Skaftafell National Park draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've shared as a family. From majestic glaciers to cascading waterfalls, this corner of Iceland has captured our hearts in ways we never imagined. It's a bittersweet moment, packing our bags, knowing that the stunning landscapes and serene tranquility of Skaftafell will soon be a memory. But what a memory it will be!

The last day of our Icelandic escapade began with a hearty breakfast at Glacier Goodies. I've always believed that a good breakfast sets the tone for the day, and Glacier Goodies certainly delivered. The kids, especially Luka, were thrilled with their freshly made sandwiches. Ana and I enjoyed the strong coffee, which was much needed after a week of early morning hikes. It's funny how simple pleasures, like a warm meal in a cozy setting, can become cherished moments on a trip like this.

After breakfast, we decided to visit Systrafoss. The name itself, meaning 'Sister Falls,' intrigued us. The drive to Kirkjubæjarklaustur was scenic, with rolling hills and vast grasslands stretching as far as the eye could see. When we arrived, the waterfall was even more enchanting than the pictures suggested. The water cascaded down the cliffs, creating a mesmerizing display of natural beauty. We took a leisurely walk along the trails, soaking in the serene atmosphere. Luka was fascinated by the local legends associated with the falls, tales of nuns and hidden treasures. Ana, ever the architect, was captivated by the unique rock formations and the way the water had sculpted the landscape over centuries.

As we stood there, admiring the falls, I couldn't help but reflect on how much this trip had meant to us. In our busy lives back in Zurich, it's often difficult to find time to truly connect as a family. But here, surrounded by the raw beauty of Iceland, we had rediscovered our bond, sharing laughter, wonder, and a sense of adventure. The simple act of exploring nature together had brought us closer than ever before.

“The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you didn't even think to ask.”

Our next adventure for the day took us to Arctic Adventures - Glacier Guides, where we embarked on a glacier hike. Having explored glaciers earlier in the week, we were all eager to experience it one last time. The guides were incredibly knowledgeable, sharing insights about the glacier's formation and the impact of climate change. It was a sobering reminder of the importance of preserving these natural wonders for future generations. Equipped with crampons and ice axes, we trekked across the icy landscape, marveling at the deep crevasses and the shimmering blue ice. Luka, surprisingly agile, navigated the terrain with ease, his laughter echoing across the glacier. I felt a surge of pride watching him embrace the challenge, his face flushed with excitement. Ana, always the cautious one, took her time, carefully placing each step, but even she couldn't resist the thrill of standing on a glacier, surrounded by such immense beauty.

After our glacier hike, we stopped for lunch at Veitingasala Restaurant, Shop, And Gas. I know it sounds like an odd choice, but we were told that they had the best lamb burgers around. And they didn't disappoint. It was a surprisingly delicious meal, a perfect blend of local flavors and hearty comfort food. While we ate, we chatted with some fellow travelers, sharing stories and tips about our Icelandic adventures. It's always fascinating to connect with people from different backgrounds, united by a shared love of travel.

Before heading back to our campsite, we made a stop at UNA Local Product / Sveitabúðin Una. I wanted to find a special souvenir to remember our trip, something that captured the essence of Iceland's culture and craftsmanship. The store was filled with handmade treasures, from woolen sweaters to intricate ceramics. I finally settled on a hand-carved wooden bird, a symbol of Iceland's diverse wildlife. Ana found a beautiful piece of jewelry made from lava stones, a reminder of the island's volcanic origins. And Luka, of course, chose a cuddly puffin toy, a memento of his favorite Icelandic bird.

For our final dinner, we decided to treat ourselves to a meal at Fjallsárlón Frost Restaurant. The restaurant offered stunning views of the Fjallsárlón glacier lagoon, a breathtaking panorama of icebergs and snow-capped mountains. The weather was surprisingly mild, so we were able to sit outside and enjoy the scenery while we ate. The food was delicious, a mix of traditional Icelandic dishes and international cuisine. As we savored our meal, we reminisced about our favorite moments from the trip, from hiking to Svartifoss to exploring the ice caves.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow across the lagoon, I felt a sense of gratitude for this incredible experience. Skaftafell had exceeded all our expectations, offering a perfect blend of adventure, natural beauty, and family bonding. It was a trip we would cherish for a lifetime.

The next day, as we pack our bags and prepare to leave, I know that a part of us will always remain in Skaftafell. The memories we've made here will stay with us, shaping our perspectives and enriching our lives. And who knows, maybe someday we'll return to this magical corner of Iceland, to once again explore its glaciers, waterfalls, and hidden treasures.

As we prepare for our journey back home, I am already filled with anticipation for our next adventure. While we have no specific plans yet, I am confident that we will find another destination that captures our imaginations and strengthens our bond as a family. After all, as I've learned, the most important thing is not where you go, but who you share the experience with. And with Ana and Luka by my side, I know that any journey will be an unforgettable one.

We didn't have any plans for tomorrow, as it marks the end of our trip. It's time to head back to Zurich, back to our everyday lives. But we're bringing a piece of Iceland with us, a piece of its glaciers, its waterfalls, and its breathtaking beauty. And most importantly, we're bringing back a stronger connection as a family, a bond that has been forged in the heart of Skaftafell.

Before I close, I must admit that I forgot to pack a portable phone charger and sunglasses for the trip. I will make sure to not forget them the next time.

Until next time, Iceland. Takk fyrir! (Thank you!)
