Udine Unveiled: A Day of Discovery

Today was all about immersing ourselves in the heart of Udine. After several days of exploring the wider Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, it felt right to dedicate a day to Udine itself. The crisp December air added a touch of magic as we wandered through the city, discovering its historical depths and enjoying its scenic views. It was a day of simple pleasures, shared with my family, and I can't wait to share the highlights.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at L'osteria del Borgo. Though technically in San Daniele del Friuli, we decided to start our day with a short trip to this osteria, enticed by its reputation for local flavors. The drive itself was beautiful, the morning light painting the rolling hills in hues of gold. We enjoyed a simple breakfast, fueling up for a day of exploration. David, as always, appreciated the strong Italian coffee, while Emily enjoyed a pastry, and I savored some local cheese. It's these small moments, enjoying local cuisine, that truly make a trip memorable.

With our appetites sated, we made our way to Udine Castle. Perched atop a hill in the city center, it’s impossible to miss. The climb up was a bit of a workout, but the views from the top were worth every step. The castle itself is a stunning structure, a mix of architectural styles reflecting its long history. We learned that the hill itself has ancient origins, possibly dating back to the Bronze Age. Legend says Attila the Hun had his soldiers build the hill to watch Aquileia burn. Whether fact or folklore, it certainly adds to the mystique.

Exploring the castle, we discovered that it now houses the History and Art Museum of the City of Udine. Inside, we wandered through rooms filled with artifacts and artwork, each telling a piece of Udine's story. Emily was particularly fascinated by the archeological exhibits, while David, the history teacher, was in his element, sharing historical tidbits. I found myself drawn to the paintings, especially those by Giovanni da Udine, a student of Raphael, who contributed to the castle's decoration. The Parliament Hall was especially impressive, a testament to the region's rich political history.

The beauty of a place is not just in its landmarks, but in the stories it holds and the memories it creates.

After immersing ourselves in history, it was time for lunch. We chose Ristorante Al Castello, hoping for a meal with a view. We were not disappointed! The restaurant offered a stunning panorama of Udine, stretching out before us like a living map. The food was traditional Friulian fare, hearty and delicious. David and I shared a bottle of local wine, while Emily enjoyed a refreshing sparkling water. It was the perfect spot to relax and savor the flavors of the region.

In the afternoon, we decided to embrace nature and hike up Monte Stella. It was a change of pace from the historical sites, and the promise of panoramic views was too tempting to resist. The trail was well-marked, winding through forests and offering glimpses of the surrounding countryside. The air was crisp and clean, and the exercise felt invigorating. Along the way, we passed a Via Crucis, a series of ceramic bas-reliefs depicting the Stations of the Cross. It added a spiritual dimension to the hike, a reminder of the region's deep-rooted traditions.

The summit of Monte Stella offered breathtaking views. From there, we could see the Julian Alps in the distance and the plains stretching out towards the Adriatic Sea. We took our time, soaking in the scenery and snapping photos to capture the moment. It was a reminder of the simple beauty of nature and the joy of sharing it with loved ones.

Before dinner, we took a stroll through Galleria Bardelli. This shopping gallery in the heart of Udine is a hub of activity, a place where locals and tourists mingle. We window-shopped, admiring the displays and soaking in the atmosphere. Emily, of course, was drawn to the clothing stores, while David enjoyed browsing the bookstores. I appreciated the mix of well-known brands and local boutiques, a reflection of Udine's blend of tradition and modernity.

Finally, as evening approached, we made our way to Hostaria Alla Tavernetta for dinner. This restaurant had been recommended to us for its authentic Friulian cuisine, and it did not disappoint. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, the perfect setting for a relaxed meal. We savored dishes made with fresh, local ingredients, each bite a celebration of the region's culinary heritage. The staff was friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

As I reflect on today, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude. Udine has charmed us with its history, its beauty, and its delicious food. It's a city that invites you to slow down, to savor the moment, and to connect with the people and places around you. And tomorrow, we venture on to Muggia Vecchia Archaeological Park and the Lombard Temple of Santa Maria in Valle, where I hope to discover more of Friuli-Venezia Giulia’s hidden gems. Perhaps we'll even find a cozy spot at Bar alla Terrazza to enjoy a drink as the sun sets.
