Chasing Waterfalls and Flavors in the Kimberley

Today was a day of chasing waterfalls, ancient art, and delicious food in the heart of the Kimberley. It’s amazing how much this region has to offer, and Liam and I are determined to soak it all in, one gorge and one meal at a time. The landscape here is so different from what I’m used to back in Canmore, but that's exactly why I wanted to come here.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Wild Mango Cafe in Kununurra. I opted for the breakfast bruschetta, while Liam went for the classic bacon and eggs. Fuelled up and ready, we set off towards the Gibb River Road, our trusty 4WD kicking up red dust as we went. The anticipation was building, as I was hoping to capture some of the Kimberley magic with my camera.

Our first stop was Adcock Gorge. The drive there was an adventure in itself, a rocky 4WD track that really tested our vehicle. It was definitely a 4WD-only situation. Once we parked, it was a short but uneven walk to the gorge. We had to clamber over a few boulders and cross a lily pond, which was quite picturesque. The anticipation grew with each step, and finally, we arrived at the gorge. The deep, shaded pool was bordered by the gorge walls, creating a serene and secluded atmosphere. The water was so inviting, we couldn't resist taking a dip to cool off from the Kimberley heat. It’s so peaceful here, and I can see why it’s considered one of the lesser-known gems of the region. I took some photos, trying to capture the beauty of the gorge, the clear water, and the surrounding red rocks.

After Adcock Gorge, we continued along the Gibb River Road to Galvans Gorge. This gorge was much more accessible, only a kilometre off the main road. The walk to the gorge was relatively flat and easy, following a creek. As we approached, we could hear the sound of the small seasonal waterfall flowing into the horseshoe-shaped pool. This place was a bit more popular than Adcock Gorge, but still incredibly beautiful. The highlight of Galvans Gorge was the ancient Aboriginal rock art. It was amazing to see these ancient paintings and learn about the cultural history of the area. I felt a deep connection to the land and its people as I stood there, admiring the artwork. Of course, we had to take a swim in the pool beneath the waterfall. The water was cool and refreshing, and the natural massage from the falls was invigorating.

The Kimberley is more than just a destination; it's an experience that awakens the soul and etches itself into your memory forever.

After our refreshing swims and explorations, we drove back to Kununurra for a late lunch at PumpHouse Kununurra. This restaurant is set in a converted pump station overlooking Lake Kununurra, offering a unique dining experience. Liam and I shared a few dishes, including the home-smoked barramundi terrine and the pan-seared scallops. The food was delicious, and the sunset views over the lake were simply breathtaking. It was the perfect way to end a day of adventure.

Before dinner, we stopped by Penney's Prints, a local photography and printing service. I was hoping to find some inspiration and maybe even pick up a print or two to remind me of the Kimberley. I ended up chatting with the owner, who shared some great tips about capturing the best light in the region. It’s always inspiring to connect with fellow photographers and learn from their experiences.

For dinner, we decided to try Kelly's Bar & Grill. The restaurant had a lovely atmosphere, and the menu featured modern Australian cuisine with local ingredients. We both opted for the wild-caught Kimberley barramundi, which was cooked to perfection. The service was excellent, and it was clear that the staff took pride in showcasing the region's produce.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on our experiences. The Kimberley is a truly special place, with its stunning landscapes, rich cultural history, and warm hospitality. I feel so grateful to be able to explore this region with Liam and capture its beauty through my lens.

Of course, not everything goes according to plan. I realised I’d forgotten to pack insect repellent, which was a rookie mistake, and my portable solar charger would have been useful. Note to self: double-check the essentials next time!

Tomorrow, we’re heading to Mitchell River National Park and Bradshaw Rock Art. I’m particularly excited about seeing the ancient Bradshaw rock art, as I’ve heard it’s some of the oldest and most unique in the world. We'll grab breakfast at Kimberleyland Waterfront Holiday Park, lunch at Kimberley Coastal Camp, and dinner at Hotel Kununurra. I’m also hoping to check out Gullivers Tavern for a drink in the evening.

I’m constantly reminded of how fortunate I am to be able to travel and experience these incredible places. I know that not everyone has the opportunity to do so, and I hope that through my blog, I can inspire others to explore the world and appreciate the beauty of our planet.

Good night from the Kimberley!

P.S. I’m already dreaming of the photos I’ll take tomorrow! Maybe I’ll even get a chance to try out some new techniques. Stay tuned!
