Family Adventure in the Heart of Huaraz, Peru
Day 6: Conquering Churup: A Day of High Altitude and Breathtaking Views
Embark on a challenging hike to Laguna Churup, a stunning turquoise lake nestled high in the Cordillera Blanca. Experience adventure!
Chasing Turquoise Dreams at Churup Lake
Today was all about pushing our limits and rewarding ourselves with some of the most incredible views I've ever seen. We set out to hike to Laguna Churup, a stunning lake known for its intense turquoise color and the challenging climb to reach it. It was a day filled with physical exertion, moments of doubt, and ultimately, immense satisfaction.
Our day began early with a hearty breakfast at Calima - Restaurant & Café. I opted for their traditional Peruvian breakfast, which was just the fuel I needed for the demanding hike ahead. Ethan, of course, went for the pancakes, a familiar comfort before the unknown. Olivia made sure we all had our fill, knowing the importance of a good start for a day like this. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff at Calima set a positive tone for the adventure.

The drive to Pitec, the trailhead, was an experience in itself. The scenery shifted dramatically as we climbed higher, trading the bustling town for the serene beauty of the Cordillera Blanca. The air was noticeably crisper, and I reminded everyone to take it easy to avoid altitude sickness. I had packed coca candies, just in case.
As we started the hike, I felt a familiar mix of excitement and trepidation. The initial path was relatively gentle, allowing us to find our rhythm. Ethan, surprisingly, was full of energy, scampering ahead like a little mountain goat. Olivia and I kept a close watch, reminding him to pace himself. The trail started with steep and uneven steps, which lasted for about 20 minutes. We took short rests at the provided shelters.
About an hour into the hike, we reached the split in the path. There were two options to get to Laguna Churup: climbing rocks using ropes and ladders or using the longer route with steep stairs. We opted for the rope climb, and it was a tough challenge, using our upper body strength to pull ourselves up the mountain. Ethan needed a little boost, but he was determined to conquer the rocks. I felt a surge of pride watching him navigate the challenging terrain. Olivia, ever the careful nurse, made sure we were all safe and secure.
Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are the ones that push you to your limits.
The altitude definitely added to the difficulty. At 4,450 meters (14,600 feet), each step required conscious effort. We paused frequently to catch our breath, taking in the panoramic views that stretched out before us. The landscape was raw and majestic, a testament to the power of nature. The air was thin, and the temperature fluctuated, reminding us of the unpredictable mountain weather.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, we reached Laguna Churup. And wow. The turquoise waters were even more vibrant than the photos I had seen. The surrounding snow-capped peaks created a stunning backdrop, making the entire scene feel surreal. All the huffing and puffing was worth it. We found a rocky spot to sit and soak in the view, eating our packed lunch. Ethan was particularly thrilled, pointing out the different shades of blue in the water. Olivia and I simply sat in comfortable silence, appreciating the moment. I took a few photos, trying to capture the essence of the landscape, knowing full well that no image could truly do it justice.

After spending a good hour at the lake, we began our descent. The way down was easier on the lungs, but tougher on the knees. We took our time, carefully navigating the rocky paths. Ethan, now a bit tired, held my hand for much of the way. As we descended, the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the mountains. The scenery transformed once again, painting the landscape in warm hues.
Back in Huaraz, we treated ourselves to a well-deserved dinner at Creperie Patrick. The cozy atmosphere and delicious crepes were the perfect reward after a long day. I had a savory crepe filled with local vegetables and cheese, while Olivia opted for a classic sweet crepe with Nutella and strawberries. Ethan, predictably, devoured his crepe in record time. Patrick, the owner, was incredibly welcoming, sharing stories of his life in Huaraz. It felt like a warm hug after a day of challenging adventure.

After dinner, we decided to try El Alquimista Rooftop Bar for a nightcap. The rooftop setting provided stunning views of the city, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. I enjoyed a local beer, while Olivia sipped on a Pisco Sour. Ethan, of course, had a soda. We talked about our favorite moments from the hike, reliving the challenges and triumphs of the day. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Tomorrow, we are planning a less strenuous day, visiting the Cordillera Blanca Summit. We will have breakfast at Manka Fusión Artesanal, lunch at Cafe Andino, and dinner at Trivio Resto Bar. I am also planning to visit FOLK Huaraz to buy some souvenirs.
Before heading back to the hotel, we decided to try BUEN GUSTO Restaurant Fusión Selvática. I had heard great things about their unique blend of jungle flavors and local cuisine, and I was eager to experience it firsthand. The restaurant was vibrant and lively, filled with the aroma of exotic spices and grilled meats. We ordered a selection of dishes, including chaufa and patacones, each bursting with flavor and character. It was a delicious and memorable end to a day of adventure and exploration.
