First Impressions of Gros Morne

After months of planning and anticipation, Klaus and I have finally arrived in Gros Morne National Park! The journey from Heidelberg was long, but the moment we stepped onto Newfoundland soil, we knew it was worth it. The crisp, clean air and the rugged beauty of the landscape immediately captivated us. We’re eager to explore every nook and cranny of this natural wonderland, and I’m excited to share our experiences with you.

The flight to St. John's was smooth, and the rental car process was surprisingly efficient. As we drove towards Gros Morne, the scenery transformed from urban sprawl to rolling hills and dense forests. I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement bubbling inside me. This trip is more than just a vacation; it's an opportunity to reconnect with nature and each other, something Klaus and I both cherish.

Our first stop was Gros Morne National Park itself. The sheer scale of the park is astounding. Towering cliffs, pristine lakes, and lush forests stretch as far as the eye can see. Even in November, the park exudes a serene beauty, with a dusting of snow adding a touch of magic to the landscape. The weather is definitely on the cooler side, with temperatures hovering around 3°C. The wind adds a bit of a bite, so I'm glad I packed plenty of warm layers. Klaus, ever the practical one, reminded me that I had forgotten my portable phone charger and the first-aid kit! I am glad I brought my hiking boots, though.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and today, our journey through Gros Morne has just begun.

Next on our itinerary was the iconic Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse. As we approached the lighthouse, the wind picked up, and the waves crashed dramatically against the rocky shore. The lighthouse itself is a charming structure, standing proudly against the elements. Built in 1897, it has a rich history of guiding ships through these treacherous waters. We explored the museum inside, learning about the lives of the lighthouse keepers and their families who lived in isolation, maintaining the light and ensuring its unwavering beam cut through the fog and darkness. The views from the top were simply breathtaking, offering panoramic vistas of the coastline.

After soaking in the history and beauty of the lighthouse, we decided to explore the local culinary scene. For lunch, we chose Oceans Room Restaurant, known for its fresh seafood and stunning harbor views. The restaurant is located on the second floor of the Ocean View Hotel, offering panoramic views of the Rocky Harbour waterfront. I opted for the seafood chowder, which was creamy and delicious, packed with fresh cod, shrimp, and mussels. Klaus, ever the adventurous eater, tried the pan-fried cod with molasses-sautéed vegetables, which he declared to be outstanding.

In the afternoon, we ventured to Gros Morne Crafts & Oceanside Cottage, a charming shop that showcases the talents of local artisans. The shop has been around since 1971, offering a wide selection of handmade Newfoundland crafts. I was immediately drawn to the intricate woodwork and vibrant textiles. We ended up purchasing a beautiful hand-carved wooden puffin as a souvenir, a perfect reminder of our time in Gros Morne. The staff were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, offering tips on fishing spots and other attractions in the area.

For dinner, we decided to try The Black Spruce Restaurant in Norris Point. Nestled in the heart of Gros Morne National Park, the restaurant offers a refined yet relaxed dining experience inspired by the flavors of Newfoundland. The Black Spruce Restaurant is dedicated to the use and promotion of local and sustainably harvested food products and produce. The menu featured dishes made from scratch with local ingredients. I chose the cumin-crusted cod, while Klaus enjoyed the house-made strozzapreti pasta. The meal was exquisite, and the service was impeccable. Every table in the restaurant boasts a scenic view of the mountains and waters of Gros Morne Park.

To cap off our first day, we made a stop at Merchant Warehouse Retro Cafe & Wine Bar in Woody Point. This retro café and wine bar is located in a restored old warehouse directly over the water, featuring unobstructed views of Bonne Bay. The Merchant has become a social attraction in Gros Morne National Park, combining culture, nature, sightseeing, and pub & grub dining in an awesome historic property. We enjoyed a glass of local craft beer on the outdoor patio, soaking in the stunning views of the bay. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, with live music adding to the ambiance.

As the day drew to a close, we reflected on our first impressions of Gros Morne. The park is a true gem, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, rich history, and warm hospitality. Despite the chilly weather, we felt a sense of warmth and excitement, eager to explore more of what this incredible place has to offer. Tomorrow, we plan to hike the Green Gardens Trail and take a boat tour of Western Brook Pond, weather permitting. I am looking forward to sharing more of our adventures with you!

Before heading back to our cozy cabin, we chatted about tomorrow's itinerary. The Green Gardens Trail promises stunning coastal views, and the boat tour of Western Brook Pond sounds absolutely magical, a chance to see the fjords up close. Klaus is particularly excited about the Western Newfoundland Brewing Co., a local brewery we plan to visit after our adventures. He’s been eager to sample some of the local brews, and I must admit, I’m curious too.

As I write this, nestled in our cabin, I can't help but feel grateful for this opportunity. Gros Morne has already exceeded my expectations, and I know that the days ahead will be filled with even more unforgettable experiences. The wind is howling outside, a reminder of the raw, untamed beauty of this place. But inside, we're warm and content, ready to embrace whatever adventures tomorrow may bring.

I can't wait to share more of our journey with you. Until then, auf wiedersehen!

P.S. I heard about the Gros Morne Hiking Festival, which already took place in September. It sounds like an incredible event, with guided hikes, boat tours, and cultural experiences. Perhaps we'll plan our next visit around the festival!
