A Warm Newfoundland Welcome

After a long journey from Bielefeld, Germany, I've finally arrived in Gros Morne National Park, ready to immerse myself in the Canadian wilderness. The crisp October air and the vibrant hues of autumn paint a breathtaking scene as I begin my solo adventure. I'm eager to explore the park's famed trails, savor local flavors, and connect with the unique culture of Newfoundland.

The flight to Deer Lake was smooth, and the drive to Gros Morne was nothing short of spectacular. Even though I travel alone, I feel a sense of excitement to connect with nature and the local community. As I drove, the landscape transformed from quaint towns to rolling hills, signaling that I was getting closer to the park's entrance. I made a mental note to buy some insect repellent and sunscreen, as I had forgotten them at home. I am sure I will need them, regardless of the season.

My first stop was the Gros Morne Entrance Kiosk in Wiltondale. The Parks Canada staff were incredibly welcoming, providing me with a park pass, a detailed map, and invaluable information about the park's attractions and any events happening during my stay. The kiosk itself was bustling with fellow travelers, all eager to explore this natural wonder. It’s a great starting point, and I felt a surge of anticipation for the days ahead.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are those we embark on alone, allowing us to fully embrace the unknown and discover the depths of our own resilience.

For breakfast, I decided to try The Old Store Cafe in Wiltondale. The cafe was cozy and inviting, with a charming, family-owned atmosphere. I ordered a traditional Newfoundland breakfast, which included toutons (fried bread dough) with molasses, and a cup of strong, locally roasted coffee. It was the perfect way to start the day, fueling me for my initial explorations. Chatting with the friendly staff, I learned about the cafe's history and their commitment to using local ingredients. It's these small, authentic experiences that I truly cherish.

After breakfast, I headed towards Rocky Harbour, the largest town in the region and a central hub for exploring Gros Morne. My plan was to have lunch at Java Jack's Restaurant & Gallery, a place I had read so much about. This funky restaurant is known for its fresh seafood, wild game, and vegetarian options. The atmosphere was vibrant, with local art adorning the walls and a lively buzz of conversation. I savored a delicious seafood chowder, packed with fresh cod, smoked bacon, and a hint of creme fraiche. I also had a glass of local craft beer, which complemented the meal perfectly. I learned that Java Jack's is under new ownership since May 2024, but the high standards are being maintained.

After lunch, I spent some time browsing Gros Morne Crafts & Oceanside Cottage, a unique shop that features handcrafted goods by local artists. I was impressed by the intricate woodwork, vibrant textiles, and unique souvenirs on display. I picked up a small, hand-carved wooden moose as a memento of my trip and chatted with the artisan about his craft and the inspiration he draws from the park's natural beauty. It's wonderful to see the community's artistic spirit thriving.

As evening approached, I made my way to Woody Point, a picturesque town on the south side of Bonne Bay. My dinner reservation was at The Black Spruce Restaurant, known for its refined Newfoundland cuisine and commitment to local, sustainable ingredients. The restaurant is part of the Neddies Harbour Inn, which offers stunning views of Bonne Bay and the Tablelands.

The Black Spruce did not disappoint. I started with a fresh salad made with local greens, followed by pan-seared cod with roasted vegetables. The flavors were exquisite, and the presentation was impeccable. The chef, Jason Lynch, and his team clearly have a passion for showcasing the best of Newfoundland's culinary offerings. The service was attentive, and the ambiance was warm and inviting. I was able to get a table even though it was low season.

After dinner, I took a leisurely stroll along the Woody Point waterfront, enjoying the tranquil atmosphere and the starlit sky. The town was quiet, but there was a sense of community and warmth in the air. I reflected on my first day in Gros Morne, feeling grateful for the opportunity to explore this incredible place.

October in Gros Morne is proving to be a delightful time to visit. The weather is cool and crisp, with average temperatures ranging from 3°C to 9°C. While there's a chance of rain or snow, the vibrant fall colors more than make up for it. The park is also less crowded than in the summer months, allowing for a more intimate and peaceful experience.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, I'm excited to hike the Tablelands Trail and the Green Gardens Trail. The Tablelands are a unique geological formation, resembling a lunar landscape, while the Green Gardens Trail offers stunning coastal views. I plan to have breakfast at Sunset Cafe, lunch at The Old Loft Restaurant, and dinner at Seaside Restaurant. I'm also considering a visit to the Western Newfoundland Brewing Co. for a taste of local craft beer.

As I settle into my campsite for the night, I'm filled with a sense of anticipation for the adventures that lie ahead. Gros Morne National Park has already captured my heart with its stunning landscapes, welcoming people, and delicious food. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

I am also looking forward to the Gros Morne Hiking Festival, which takes place in September. It sounds like a great opportunity to explore the park's trails with expert guides and fellow outdoor enthusiasts. I will also check out the Sonic Harvest Sessions in Woody Point, which features music, food, and stories in the historic Woody Point Heritage Theatre.
