Finding My Way in San Cristobal

Today was all about connecting with the heart of San Cristobal de las Casas. From the moment I stepped out, I knew it would be a day filled with vibrant experiences and cultural immersion. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of local coffee and blooming flowers, setting the perfect stage for a day of exploration with my family.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Restaurante Sabor a mi. Aisha and Zayn were particularly excited to try some traditional Chiapanecan dishes. I opted for a hearty plate of huevos rancheros, while Aisha chose the tamales, and Zayn, ever the predictable one, went for pancakes. The cozy atmosphere and friendly service made it a perfect start to our day.

Fuelled up and ready, we joined a free walking tour of San Cristobal. This turned out to be an excellent decision. Our guide, Ramon, was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the city's history and culture. He led us through the cobblestone streets, sharing fascinating stories about the indigenous communities, colonial architecture, and the Zapatista movement. Zayn was captivated by the colorful murals and the tales of revolutionaries, asking questions at every turn. It’s moments like these that make traveling as a family so rewarding, seeing the world through his curious eyes.

The tour took us through the Andador Turistico Miguel Hidalgo, a bustling pedestrian street lined with artisan shops and cafes. The vibrant atmosphere was infectious, and we found ourselves drawn into the rhythm of the city. We stopped to admire the Arco del Carmen, a beautiful Mudejar-style arch that once served as the entrance to the city.

Sometimes, the best way to understand a place is to simply wander its streets, letting the stories unfold with each step.

For lunch, we ventured to Masala Raff, an Indian restaurant that came highly recommended. As someone who grew up with the rich flavors of Maldivian cuisine, I'm always eager to explore other South Asian culinary traditions. The restaurant was small and cozy, filled with the aroma of spices. Aisha and I shared a vegetable curry and some naan, while Zayn enjoyed a milder lentil soup. The food was delicious, offering a comforting taste of home away from home. I was pleasantly surprised by the number of vegan options available.

After lunch, we decided to do some shopping. Aisha had been wanting to pick up some local handicrafts, and I was on the lookout for unique souvenirs. We stumbled upon Panamera Concept Store, a quirky shop filled with an eclectic mix of clothing, jewelry, and home decor. Aisha found a beautiful hand-embroidered shawl, and I picked up a small, intricately carved wooden mask. Zayn, of course, gravitated towards the toys, and we ended up buying him a colorful, hand-painted alebrije.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to La Viña de Bacco for dinner. This wine bar had been recommended to me by a fellow traveler I met at Hotel Helvérica. The atmosphere was lively and inviting, with locals and tourists mingling over glasses of wine and tapas. We ordered a bottle of Mexican red wine and a selection of tapas, enjoying the vibrant energy of the evening. The staff were friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much we had experienced in just a few hours. San Cristobal de las Casas has a way of drawing you in, immersing you in its culture and charm. The free walking tour provided invaluable insights into the city's history and social dynamics, while the local cuisine tantalized our taste buds. The unique shops offered a glimpse into the creativity and craftsmanship of the region.

As we walked back to Hotel Helvérica, Zayn was already asking about our plans for tomorrow. I told him we'd be visiting Casa De La Sirena and Iglesia de San Cristóbalito. He seemed excited, especially about the prospect of climbing more stairs – a peculiar fascination for a seven-year-old! Aisha and I are looking forward to exploring more of San Cristobal’s religious architecture and learning about their cultural significance.

Before drifting off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family. Travel is more than just seeing new places; it's about connecting with different cultures, learning new perspectives, and creating lasting memories. And San Cristobal de las Casas has certainly left an indelible mark on our hearts.

Tomorrow, we plan to start our day with breakfast at Restaurante La Lupe, followed by visits to Casa De La Sirena and Iglesia de San Cristóbalito. For lunch, we're thinking of trying Bangcook Tailandés, and dinner will be at Casa de Willy Restaurante. And perhaps, if Zayn is up for it, we might sneak in a quick visit to CALACA CASA DE MIXOLOGIA for a nightcap – after all, a little bit of local mixology never hurt anyone!

Until tomorrow, San Cristobal!
