Reaching for the Roof of Chopta

The crisp mountain air bit at my cheeks as I set out this morning, a familiar sting that always seems to sharpen my senses and remind me why I chase these adventures. Today was the day I'd been anticipating since arriving in Chopta: the trek to Chandra Shila peak. The 'Mini Switzerland of India' had already captured my heart with its rolling meadows and panoramic vistas, but I knew the view from the summit would be something truly special.

I started my day with a hearty breakfast at Shri Tungeshwar Rajkamal Hotel And Restaurant Chopta. I opted for a simple omelette and some fried rice, fueling up for the climb ahead. The restaurant had a beautiful view, which was a great way to start the day.

The initial stretch of the Chopta-Chandrashila trek was relatively gentle, winding through a forest that was slowly transitioning into its winter coat. The leaves were a mix of golds and browns, and the air was filled with the scent of pine. I passed a few other trekkers, exchanging smiles and nods, each of us lost in our own thoughts and anticipation. It's one of the things I love about solo travel – the chance to connect with others in fleeting moments, sharing a common experience without the need for deep conversation. It reminds me of Aisha and Zayn, and how much they would have loved this. I made a mental note to bring them here someday. I miss them terribly, but I know this solo trip is something I need to do for myself right now.

The trail started to climb more steeply as I approached Tungnath, the highest Shiva temple in the world. The temple itself was a sight to behold, perched precariously on a ridge with the Himalayas as its backdrop. The temple is believed to be 1000 years old and built by Arjuna. I paused here for a while, soaking in the spiritual atmosphere and offering a silent prayer for strength and guidance. The wind was picking up, and I could see clouds gathering in the distance, a reminder that the mountains are always in charge.

Sometimes, the greatest journeys are those that lead us to the highest peaks within ourselves.

After a brief rest, I began the final ascent to Chandra Shila. This was the most challenging part of the trek, a steep climb over rocky terrain. The air was thin, and I found myself stopping frequently to catch my breath. But with each step, the views became more and more rewarding. The snow-capped peaks of Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Chaukhamba seemed to grow taller and more majestic, their white summits piercing the clouds. I was so glad I remembered my camera; I couldn’t wait to capture the beauty of this place and share it on my blog. It’s moments like these that I wish I could share with Aisha and Zayn in real time.

Reaching the summit of Chandra Shila was an incredible feeling. A sense of accomplishment washed over me, mixed with awe and gratitude. The 360-degree view was simply breathtaking. I could see for miles in every direction, the entire Himalayan range laid out before me like a giant, frozen tapestry. The wind was fierce, but I didn't care. I found a sheltered spot and sat there for a long time, simply taking it all in. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reminder of the power and beauty of nature, and the resilience of the human spirit. I felt so alive and free, a world away from the office in Toronto.

For lunch, I stopped at Valley View Hotel Chopta. I enjoyed a simple meal while enjoying the view. The hotel was conveniently located and offered a pleasant respite after my trek.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, I started my descent. The trail was even more treacherous on the way down, and I had to be careful not to slip. But the stunning sunset views kept me motivated, and I eventually made it back to Chopta safe and sound. Before heading back to my camp, I stopped by Herbal Himalaya and picked up a few natural herbs. I’m always on the lookout for natural remedies and sustainable products, and this little shop seemed to have a good selection.

For dinner, I decided to try Bliss White hotel and restaurant. The food was delicious, and the staff was very friendly. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day. I enjoyed pizza, noodles, and chilli potato.

Back at my campsite, I sipped on a cup of hot tea and reflected on the day's events. The trek to Chandra Shila had been challenging, but it had also been incredibly rewarding. I had pushed myself physically and mentally, and I had been rewarded with some of the most stunning views I had ever seen. As I drifted off to sleep under a blanket of stars, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for this incredible journey and the opportunity to experience the beauty of Chopta. The Bourbon Club N Lounge isn't my thing, so I'll skip that tomorrow. I'm more excited about visiting Kartik Swami Mandir and Simhastha water falls tomorrow.

I'm also looking forward to breakfast at THE MRITYUNJAYA ADVENTURE CAMP's Restaurant, lunch at Muskan - A Family Restaurant, and dinner at Homestays Akashganga Chopta-Hudu. It’s been an incredible journey so far, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings. This trip is exactly what I needed – a chance to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with nature, and with myself.
