Touching Down in Bahia: Our Chapada Diamantina Adventure Begins

After months of planning and anticipation, our family finally arrived in Chapada Diamantina National Park. The journey from Montreal was long, but the excitement of exploring this natural Brazilian haven kept our spirits high. The kids, Aminata and Ibrahim, were practically buzzing with energy, eager to see the waterfalls and caves they’d only seen in pictures. As a software developer, I usually spend my days in front of a screen, but these trips with my family are essential for reconnecting with nature and each other.

The flight to Salvador was smooth, and the change in climate was immediately noticeable. Montreal was starting to feel like autumn, but here, the warm tropical air wrapped around us like a comforting blanket. After landing, we picked up our rental car, a sturdy SUV that I hoped would handle the roads leading to the park. The drive from Salvador to Chapada Diamantina - BA was an adventure in itself. The landscape transformed from bustling cityscapes to rolling hills and vibrant countryside. Fatoumata, my wife, pointed out the different types of trees and plants, turning the drive into an impromptu botany lesson for the kids. I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride, showing my children a piece of the world so different from our home in Montreal, yet so intrinsically connected through the shared human experience of wonder and exploration.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and ours began with a shared dream of exploring Brazil's natural beauty.

Our first stop was the Restaurante Sabor da Serra for breakfast. After such a long trip, everyone was hungry. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with the aroma of fresh coffee and local pastries filling the air. We sat at a wooden table near the window, enjoying a hearty breakfast of *pão de queijo* (cheese bread) and fresh fruit. Aminata loved the *pão de queijo*, declaring it her new favorite food. Ibrahim, ever the adventurous one, tried a local fruit he couldn't pronounce but devoured it nonetheless. I savored the strong Brazilian coffee, feeling the caffeine slowly erase the remnants of jet lag.

After breakfast, we decided to dive right into exploring. We headed straight for Chapada Diamantina National Park. The park itself is massive, covering an area of 38,000 square kilometers. As we drove through the entrance, we were immediately struck by the landscape. Towering cliffs, deep valleys, and lush greenery stretched as far as the eye could see. The kids were glued to the windows, pointing out every rock formation and unusual plant. I pulled over at a scenic overlook, and we all piled out of the car to take in the view. The air was fresh and clean, carrying the scent of wildflowers and damp earth. I took out my camera and started snapping photos, trying to capture the grandeur of the scene. Fatoumata joined me, and we took a family photo with the breathtaking landscape as our backdrop. These are the moments I cherish the most – when we are all together, surrounded by the beauty of nature, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

For lunch, we decided to have a picnic within the park. We found a secluded spot near a small stream and spread out our blanket. Fatoumata had packed sandwiches, fruits, and some traditional Malian snacks. As we ate, we listened to the sounds of the forest – the chirping of birds, the rustling of leaves, and the gentle murmur of the stream. Ibrahim, always the curious one, started collecting rocks and leaves, while Aminata sketched the landscape in her notebook. I took a moment to simply observe my family, feeling grateful for this opportunity to share this experience with them.

In the afternoon, we visited Empório Chapada Diamantina, a local shop known for its regional products. I wanted to pick up some souvenirs and sample some of the local delicacies. The shop was a treasure trove of artisanal goods – honey, coffee, handmade soaps, and colorful textiles. We sampled some of the local coffee, which was rich and flavorful. I bought a bag of the *Café Gourmet Especial Arábica Rigno*, knowing it would be a perfect reminder of our trip when we returned to Montreal. Fatoumata found some beautiful handmade soaps with scents of local flowers, and the kids picked out small trinkets to remind them of their adventure. I also grabbed a bottle of *Pimenta em Mel* (chili in honey) – something to spice up our meals back home. Supporting local businesses is important to me; it’s a way of giving back to the community and ensuring that these traditions continue to thrive.

For dinner, we returned to Restaurante Sabor da Serra, as we knew the food would be reliable and delicious. We were greeted warmly by the staff, who remembered us from breakfast. This time, we tried some of the local specialties – *moqueca baiana* (a seafood stew) and *vatapá* (a creamy shrimp and coconut milk dish). The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to the region’s culinary heritage. The kids enjoyed the *moqueca*, while Fatoumata and I savored the *vatapá*. As we ate, we talked about our plans for the next day. We were all excited to visit Morro do Pai Inácio and Ribeirão do Meio.

As the day drew to a close, we found a charming pousada (guesthouse) just outside of Lençóis. It was simple but comfortable, with a beautiful garden and a hammock strung between two palm trees. After settling in, I sat on the porch, sipping a cup of the local coffee I had purchased earlier. The night air was filled with the sounds of crickets and distant music. I looked up at the stars, which seemed brighter and more numerous than I had ever seen them before. I thought about my life back in Montreal, my work, and my responsibilities. But in that moment, all that seemed distant and unimportant. What mattered was being here, with my family, in this beautiful place. I felt a sense of peace and contentment that I rarely experienced in my everyday life.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Morro do Pai Inácio for what I hear is an unforgettable sunset, and then we'll cool off at Ribeirão do Meio. I’m also hoping to check out Catingueiro Brew Pub in the evening for a taste of local nightlife. As I head to bed, I can't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to explore Chapada Diamantina with my family. It's more than just a vacation; it's a chance to connect with nature, experience a new culture, and create lasting memories. And as a travel blogger, I am excited to share our adventures with the world, inspiring others to embark on their own journeys of discovery.

I am looking forward to sharing more of our Chapada Diamantina adventure with you all. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s blog, where I will share our experiences at Morro do Pai Inácio and Ribeirão do Meio. Until then, *até logo*!
